According to CNN, the McCain campaign is claiming that the Obama camp sent out the veep message at 3 AM as "one last inside baseball" attack on Hillary Clinton.

We all assumed it was intentional. I'm just kind of dubious it was an explicit "Fuck you." as much as a "Look at me now, bitches. Who's not ready to do the job?"

Uh, I assume it was entirely coincidental. The story broke at what, 2 AM on the east coast? They followed it up shortly thereafter with the texts since the cat was already out of the bag.

Help me out: what does 3AM have to do with Hillary Clinton?

Guys, remember that LondonBridge pops in here every now and then to tell us how naive we are to support Obama and then call us cultists. He doesn't stick around to do more than that anymore because the last time he did, he got a beat down pretty hard.

He's right about the debates sewing shit up, though. I mean, McCain isn't going to really debate so much as parrot the talking points his handlers give him, at which point Obama can deftly slap him around with answers that have been formulated months ago. Obama already had the hardest debates months ago, so the only problem he could possibly face is from an ABC debate redux, which I doubt will happen.

So the RNC website now has this little ticker on the main page that says "Time Until Biden's Next Gaffe", and it's counting upwards. It's currently at 12 hours, 38 minutes. Not only should it say "Time Since Biden's Last Gaffe", since that's what it's counting; but christ sake, have some goddamned dignity.

Obama vs Keyes on religion Watch some of the other clips of the debates they've had. Obama can do a good job of dismantling simple, incorrect assertions when he's given the time to do so.

I think the format of the debates is going to play to his strengths. Making McCain actually talk for nine minutes is going to be fucking agonizing to watch, and Obama's going to have all the time in the world to ID the weak points, get his thoughts organized, and be ready to tear McCain down at his own pace. He does need to loosen up and improve his performance, but I think between McCain "winning" the faith head-to-head and debates supposedly being Obama's weak suit he's well positioned to do extremely well.

Except that wasn't really a debate. The debate format is going to hurt McCain, because Obama will get to both counter his statements and ask him questions, neither type of challenge he'll take well.

Even if I wasn't going to vote democratic this election, this schoolboy bullshit they're (edit: they as in GOP) pulling this election would almost force me to vote dem purely on a moral basis.

We have Obama and Biden, two candidates that above everything else actually seem "presidential", in either that elegant and calm/cool classic slick politician way, or a bad motherfucker aka Teddy. Those are the kind of people you want telling you where to go and how to do it, not an absurdly juvenile bunch of old crockety fucks who run things like junior high.

The entire republican party right now, with those obvious exceptions that (while I can't name) I'm sure exist somewhere, is mired in frat house tactics and are amplifying everything that's wrong with politicians, like a dog taking a shit on your rug and looking at you happily waiting for its cookie.

To be fair, the dems aren't playing exactly clean either, but their egregiousness is no where near this landslide of steaming political bullshit, artificially colored red white and blue with inks used from foreign countries, pockmarked with undigested bits of the dreams of people they're crushing in order to retain their struggling power hold in Washington. The dems are playing sorta-hardball with a few cheapshots, the republicans are nothing BUT cheapshots, gaffes, and their entire campaign this election has been a political version of setting a bag of shit on fire and leaving it on someones doorstep.

    Fuck this.

    (sorry if this is repeat)
Unsurprisingly, McCain hits Obama on Hillary - since she wasn't chosen:

    http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2008/...-more-personal/
No sooner had Barack Obama publicly announced his new running mate had John McCain’s campaign produced an attack ad asking: Why not Hillary?

“Passed Over” will hit the airwaves at (you guessed it) 3 a.m. Sunday. The timing is a reference to Hillary Clinton’s national security ad during the Democratic primary and the same time the Obama campaign sent out its text message announcing Delaware Sen. Joseph Biden as the vice-presidential nominee.

“She won millions of votes. But isn’t on his ticket. Why?” an announcer says in the 30-second spot.

The answer? “For speaking the truth.”

The ad, which has not yet been released, then ticks off a litany of criticism Clinton used against Obama in the prolonged primary, according to a transcript sent to reporters.

“You never hear the specifics,” Clinton says.

“On the Rezko scandal,” the voice says.

“We still don’t have a lot of answers about Senator Obama,” Clinton says in footage from the primaries.

“Senator Obama’s campaign has become increasingly negative,” Clinton says in another scene.

The announcer closes by saying “The truth hurt. And Obama didn’t like it.”

Since he would no doubt have done the same thing if she had been chosen, as usual it is damned if you do, damned if you don't.

So you know an idea has hit the Beltway conventional wisdom when Maureen Dowd is writing about it.
So it’s hard to believe that John McCain is now in danger of exceeding his credit limit on the equivalent of an American Express black card. His campaign is cheapening his greatest strength — and making a mockery of his already dubious claim that he’s reticent to talk about his P.O.W. experience — by flashing the P.O.W. card to rebut any criticism, no matter how unrelated. The captivity is already amply displayed in posters and TV advertisements.

Maureen fucking Dowd has realized this!

    http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/07/24/pew.latino.poll/
Obama's approval rating with registered Latino voters, the nationwide Pew Hispanic Center poll found, is at 66 percent versus 23 percent favoring McCain.

Obama's "strong showing in this survey represents a sharp reversal in his fortunes from the primaries, when Obama lost the Latino vote to Hillary Clinton by a margin of nearly 2-to-1," according to Pew Hispanic Center associate director Mark Hugo Lopez.

Obama's favorability among Latinos is slightly up from a Gallup Poll summary of surveys taken in May, which showed Obama with 62 percent of Latino voters nationwide, compared with 29 percent for McCain.

"He now appears to be even more popular than Hillary Clinton among Latinos," Lopez said.

Pew Hispanic Center's deputy director, Susan Minushkin, added that Obama is "enjoying broad-based support among Hispanics who don't see great differences by age, by gender, by education, by income."

The bolded: that's why they did this basically. Why it was at 3 AM was because some moron leaked it to the press and pre-empted it. The plan was 7 AM today.

The italics: Richardson has a reputation for being somewhere between handsy with women and cheating on his wife. Also Obama already dominates Latinos, as titmouse points out.

Richardson isn't a quarter of the speaker that Biden is. I mean, today's speech had more awesome in it than everything Richardson has ever said in public. Contrast that with Bill "did you know I'm the governor of New Mexico" Richardson and tell me he was a better pick.
