Well without the gun and glasses that just means you're becoming The Man.
    I'm okay with that.

I understand The Man has good health and retirement benefits.
Also there’s an initiation ceremony where you place your idealism under a millstone. :P

Wow. Been a looooooooong time since I thought of that story.

I think it was earlier in this thread or the last where someone posted a youtube video of one of RATM's music videos, and it was of how Gore and Bush were the same candidate.

Curiously, that was the overarching sentiment of that election, that whomever got elected would inherit a healthy economy and basically be a caretaker president. Nobody except the deeply paranoid (and, as it turned out, correct) knew that Bush the Lesser had the ability to be an archvillain. Nobody except some ignored CIA and FBI guys knew that 9/11 was going to happen.

Further, Gore of 2000 was nowhere near as awsome as Gore of 2008 is. He was bland as fuck.

While I, myself, was one of the paranoid ones that had a sinking feeling that Bush was going to squander our good will, treasure, and military lives, I honestly can't fault Rage Against the Machine for their beliefs of the time. Both parties were relentlessly corporate and often corrupt. It took 12 years in the wilderness before the Democrats got their shit together and started rocking out as the people's party. They still fall astray on occasion, too (see: Hoyer, Fucking Steny).

There were also folks like me who paid attention to domestic social issues like abortion, the environment, gay rights, Supreme Court nominations, stem cells and so forth and thought that the folks claiming that a born-again Christian Republican oilman was fundamentally identical policy-wise to Al Gore were at best willfully ignoring those issues.

So no, it wasn't just the "deeply paranoid" who didn't fall for the whole "Bush=Gore" gibberish.

Not to toot my own horn or anything, but toot toot.

On another forum I read, I saw someone mentioning that Pawlenty has allegedly been eliminated for VP contention for John McCain. Anyone else seen this?

Also, are the only prospects besides him Romney, Ridge and Lieberman?

I heard Crist and Jindal thrown around quite a bit several weeks ago. Jindal apparently claims to have performed an exorcism and cured cancer, so he's out, but I don't think anything knocked Crist off the running.

It's true, though. Overplaying the 9/11 card hurt Giuliani's credibility, even with his own supporters. McCain could easily do the same. He needs to learn from that mistake and focus on his wins as a Senator.

Secret Service - When I was in high school I lived in a town where then President George H.W. Bush would take fishing trips. He would stay at a private house, but a lot of his SS (zomg Godwin's law) detail, staff, and the WH press corps would stay at a nearby resort. Since it was a "tropical" environment the SS guys were all issued these absolutely horrible flower print, short sleeved, button down shirts. Nothing funnier than seeing a bunch of dudes in those ridiculous outfits with dark sunglasses, earpieces, and terrible sunburns. Very stealthy and sinister.

It was during this time that I also discovered that Brit Hume is a gigantic jerk.

Alan Keyes got something like 30-40% of the vote against Obama. There are many, many people who vote a strict party ticket, no exceptions. Robot Hitler with homosexual abortion-lasers would get at least 33% of the vote if he had an (R) in front of his name.

So I got into it with a Republican coworker, who told me that VP's don't matter. He reiterated this after I told him tonight about Obama's selection of Biden. I decided I'd call his bluff.

"So, I'm hearing that McCain might be settling on Mitt Romney."

    He shudders.

"His second choice is looking like Joe Lieberman."

    Shudders again.

    Yeah, I knew it, bitch.

If. She's still got her holes, but she is the best pick McCain can make.

I don't see him going outside Romney/Lieberman/Ridge/Pawlenty, though.

We could poll this one up too, and again, I'm using the individuals with biggest recent buzz and "the field":

WHO DO YOU THINK MCCAIN WILL SELECT?
    Mitt Romney
    Joe Lieberman
    Tom Ridge
    Tim Pawlenty
    Sarah Palin
    Rob Portman
    Colin Powell
    Mike Huckabee
    Carly Fiorina
    Someone else

I dunno, Palin has the whole corruption fiasco (where she preemtped an independent investigation into something she did by forming her own group to investigate it) going on. Not to mention I rarely hear her mentioned anywhere outside of internet forums (and given that Kaine, Bayh, Sebelius and Biden were all mentioned pretty widely by the MSM...)

However I have a gut feeling McCain really wants to pick Joe Lieberman (It's not like hes shown an impeccable judgment up until now either).

He ran as an Independent last time around and he's already slated to speak at the Republican National Convention. He's got 1 foot already over the line.

What's ironic about all of this is that if things had gone "to plan" for the Dems in 2000, Lieberman would now be heading this year's ticket. Either the party has radically changed since then, or he's radically changed since then.
