Just a heads up, next time we will get Mea knocked out for whoever else needs it, please bone up on your Mea maps and tactics. Of course after that, we take another run at Holla.

I think deet is the only one here who still needs Mea. There might be a couple (Zavey) in the LS who do too though.

Yes. They no longer delete characters for inactivity; or if they do it's a MUCH longer time.

You can get those guys back, you'll just have to wait for the next "return home" campaign.

See, it's shit like that that I just don't get. Maybe business decisions like that make more sense when you live in a country full of tentacle porn and pantie vending machines, but to me it's just a what the fuck moment.

I shouldn't have to wait for a promotion to get my characters back. D:

This is why you never saw the game climb in subscriber numbers over the last 8 or so years, whacked out policies and general cultural oddity with their account management system. Shit, I don't even remember my PlayOnline ID, or is that IDs? Account management and customer service were always big barriers to me...

I'd come back to play on a fresh account if several things happened at once:

    1. God damn widescreen high resolution support. I want 1680x1050 at least :x
    2. Massive upheval of the current game mechanics to allow for soloable leveling all the way to the level cap. (I know this probably won't happen, ever... since the Japanese have massive hard-ons for that whole collectivism over individualism thing)...
    3. Better recruit a friend policies. They had almost no incentive to bring friends in back in the day, especially when you were already established. I heard this is happening, it is just one thing on my list though.

Although it's quite apparent your mind is made up either way, I will go ahead and counter-point you a bit.
    1. There is widescreen support, there has been, if you got far enough to the config menu, you might have found it.
    2. No, no, and no. I won't bother to argue this point, but there are plenty of single player rpgs and wow for you to play if you want to play by yourself.
    3. There is, there has been. It's just easier now on a larger scale for people other than a direct buddy.

Also, you can get your account back if you just call, the policy has changed from the old delete characters after x inactive days. Yeah.

    I don't...what?

Ok, I understand the frustration with the deletion thing; but keep in mind this was a early-days MMO policy by SE to 1)keep their costs down and 2)keep subscribers with the threat of impending deletion. I fully agree that it is (was) an asinine policy and I'm glad it's gone. Luckily I like my current character, but when I came back and had to make him because my Taru was gone, it was painful.

But the Return to Vana'del campaign happens once or twice a year or so. I think it was Jan of last year last (Dec-Feb iirc). So I dunno. At least there is the option to get your old guys back, even if it isn't year round. But it allows them to have a big promotional thing and spam people with e-mails and websites with goodies.

Again, not really defending it but it's an option and I can see their reasoning; somewhat.

    Anyway, about your points:

1.)Solved. Forever ago. Since day one you could alter the resolution in the registry to up the graphics. I have the graphics set at 2048x2048 and I set it to 16:9 in the options. There are a ton of different aspect ratio options. The overlay graphics have always been customizable to get a wide-screen res.

2.)Semi-solved. Pretty much every class now can solo always. Only a few jobs can solo efficiently enough to make it more viable than xp'ing in a party; but the option is there. Obviously jobs like WHM are going to have more trouble than others. There have been several changes to party xp over the years to give smaller teams less of a punishment on XP and make them considerably more viable. Duo'ing, small parties are completely viable now. Again, it's unlikely that you'll pull in as much xp per hour as a full party doing the standard camps, but it's an option.

3.)While I'd love a free month or something if I recruited someone; it's not a big deal and not a gamebreaker. There has been, for some time now, a recruitment system, letting you get specific gear as your recruit pays for subscription times. Some of the gear is good some is just flavor stuff. In SE's defense, they could hardly put in a system that gave people amazing gear without people exploiting the hell out of (see: triple xp in WoW) HOWEVER You should check out the info coming in about the update this month. Easy Prey and Decent Challenge enemies are getting a "signifigant" xp boost (hopefully aiding in both reducing downtime in parties by expanding possible kills, and making soloing more viable than it already is). Level syncing: having a friend join FFXI? You're level 60? No problem. Join their party, and have your level synced to theirs. You can party with them, it doesn't hurt their xp a bit, you still gain xp towards your actual level and everyone benefits. You don't even have to change your gear. Keep on your AF gear and it auto-adjusts for you so you can get right to the fun.

Seriously, the changes in this patch in particular (which is completely fuckawesome) and changes over the past few years have improved FFXI immensely. If you don't like the core mechanics of the game, the changes won't do much for you; but if you liked the game as it was but wished things were better: they are.

There's not much more that can be said on the subject.

I make the call for a more solo friendly game from experience. I did just say that my highest level was 57, didn't I? That was also years ago long before the cuter fuzzier FFXI you all know and love today.

You know what I got sick of the most? It wasn't purely the fact that I had to be in a group to level, but finding said group was another story. I used to sit there in the city looking for groups, I even tried joining a large linkshell, hell I even made Japanese friends but could never get a consistent gameplay session when I wanted to. Maybe I'm crazy but I like to accomplish a goal like a level cap on one job at a time (barring 37 for a subjob), not have 15 different jobs at varying levels because I can't find a group for wherever the hell the next leveling zone is.

I loved the group mechanics in the game, and did quite well as a paladin tank. I had my warrior already leveled to 35 or so (back when the cap was 70) and didn't need to level it, and forget about all the other possible subjobs, I didn't enjoy having to level all of em just to please some min/maxing nutcase players. I wanted to start working on that nice first set of armor for pallies and hitting 60 would have been awesome...

I had a large friends list back in the day, hell I even knew a few good Japanese folks like Tark, I beleive, and he was on Carbuncle, wonder if he is still there? What pissed me off was that conflicting schedules wouldn't allow any real consistency in leveling and don't say "just go level another job" because then things just get even more out of whack.

The bottom line is I could never level up when I wanted to, no matter how bad I wanted to. All the other aspects of the game either had insanely high barriers to entry like pretty much all the crafting at the time, or were too boring to consider. You can preach the game's difficulty all you want but it's falling on deaf ears, dulled by a few years of sitting there LFG most of the time. The real problem with grouping is getting one together when you want one.

(and no, I wasn't the kind to just sit there, I made my fair share of groups, and sat around trying to make my fair share for hours waiting for a key class to show up...)

    My revised #2:

Do something so I can progress when there is nobody around my level to fuckin' group with! (FFXI is a touchy subject for me because I do love most of the game mechanics, but the lack of consistency in progression was maddening).

Should we be arguing with you?
and there's plenty to do other than EXP, nobody is stopping you from doing anything else but you.
If you are just focusing on groups and exp then I think it's safe to say you were playing the game wrong.

I should have also said I did the rank missions as far as I could go. Funny how they dangle that carrot in your face, but the only way to progress in missions past a certain point is to level up. Outside of missions, there wasn't much else to do besides crafting and socializing. If it were just socializing I get plenty of that for free elsewhere...

Am I missing something? What is this great distraction from leveling? Unlocking sub-jobs? I had them all unlocked. Doing quests? I did just about every quest I could even though most of the time the rewards were less than satisfying.

The bottom line and the point I was trying to make was that it all seemed to come down to leveling, once everything else was said and done, and I was stuck at 57 for a long time...

(oh and ballista didn't exist back when I was on my pally, shoulda pointed that out)

Okay you see, you keep talking about the game when it first came out. MMO's change over time, thats why we pay money every month. Nobody can seem to convince you of that, and if you did about 10 minutes of research you could learn it yourself.
I don't care what you accomplished before, it's really neat that you can show off how much you did like 4+ years ago but assuming that they havent added any content but jobs and exping is ridiculous. You are ridiculous. I am done.

You aren't making a point you are simply talking about what you've done over and over again. You can do it until you are blue in the face, but you still aren't making a point here. If you are, it isn't very informed, sadly.

I quit all those years ago because I ran out of stuff to do. Waiting around for an expansion, which at the time wasn't even announced, wasn't something I wanted to do. When the first expansion came out, by the way, I found that even if I got my paladin back I wouldn't have been able to enjoy it much since most of the interesting content was for higher level people.

I guess I'm done, too...sorry for the ranting. It stems from the early abuse this game put me through... :|

You mean the early abuse that you subscribed to?

Look, I will be the first to say that if the game isn't fun, don't play.

But it is a different game now. All your trials and tribulations from when the game first launched? Throw them out the window. They are mostly falling on deaf ears here because we are no longer talking about the same game. Your experience is obsolete, and come the September update it will sound even more like "I walked to school through the snow every day! Uphill! Both ways!".

If you don't want to come back, that is fine. It is still a challenging game, and it isn't for everyone. Last thing we want is a square peg in a round hole. However, if you want to look into exactly how the game has changed, get a trial disk or something and bomb around a starting nation for a few weeks.

Is the subjob quest still a pain? I'll admit that's what has me on the fence right now since I'd have to start from scratch (I was an idiot and lost all my FFXI info. CC info doesn't help because I borrowed it from a friend way back).

Subjob quest is that you have to get three items from Valkrum dunes, OR three items from Buburimu peninsula, and aside from the skull or the bloody robe these are items you typically encounter while leveling there.

If you want help getting the items you have but to ask. While we won't drop everything and come running, we can come to a good agreement about when to set some time aside to acquire these things.

Did my first Assault mission last night

It was the Lebros Cavern one where you clear rocks out the way

We completed it with less than thirty seconds left on the clock

Couldn't repeat it because EVERYONE had two-houred at some point but it was fun and I got 1100 points toward those Yigit Crackows that high-level black mages love so much

Excavation Duty is annoying because it's one of the few assaults that are still hard to do even with a full group and demands a fairly strict setup, unless you plan on getting lucky with the Qiqirn mines.

That's contrasted to, say, Leujaoam Cleansing, which can easily be done with a healer and two heavy-hitters with some form of silence/sleep/stun mixed in there.

So, static this week; not so hot. :P

No biggie though. It happens. I think we all were off our game, or otherwise not feeling well.

If we want to switch jobs up for the static because of the level syncing we should get it all worked out now instead of trying to figure it out last minute.

Does anyone want to change their role? Or are we cool with what we've got?

I'm more than happy to keep on healing. I wouldn't mind getting WHM up to get teleports anyway. And I enjoy healing now and then. Once a week is about perfect.

    d2s?

    Warp II.

The JP word for Warp starts with D so it's shortened D2 most of the time.
Occasionally abbreviated D2 due to the Japanese word for Warp, Dejyon (de-zone)

So, I am interested in playing FFXI. I kinda want to play a Blue Mage. Is a Blue Mage a generally useful job?

    Ha

    HA

"Is blue mage a generally useful job" indeed

Blue mages are only the most versatile job in the game

It's a jack-of-all-trades job, weaker basic melee than most, but gets 'physical spells' which are essentially enemy weapon skills, as well as 'magical spells' which are basically the same thing, only magic-based skills that often have other uses (healing, dispelling, debuffing/buffing).

Often used as a generic MP-based damage dealer in EXP parties, but it has its uses in many other facets.

Somewhat difficult to get/maintain as your first 'advanced job', but with help (like me or bri or anyone else) it shouldn't be too difficult.

On the flip side though, some of those Blue magics will have you wanting to kill yourself and save the monster the trouble.

BLU is a pretty powerful job from what I've been able to tell.

The enemy skills are really useful; you can focus on Melee or Magic style skills. You "equip" a certain amount of skills for your level; so you don't just have access to everything. You need to decide before heading out what role you want to play.

Also, apparently they solo fairly well.

The major drawback is (aside from the fact that like all extra jobs you have to get a 30 of a base job to get the quest to unlock it) I understand actually getting the skills themselves can be something of a hassle. There are restrictions blah blah blah.

If you want a more knowledgeable look here's a link to the wiki. There are many guides at the bottom. Glance through them to see thoughts and strategies.

If you're not really familiar with a lot of the mechanics of FFXI, you can still likely get the general idea of some of the basics of the job.

Paladin is up to 45, now to work on Warrior some more.

Edit: As a side note, I hate it when someone has to stand six inches from you and say hello in /tell. It is like they are trying their damnedest to be creepy.

I am out of the static. I can't allocate enough of my resources to keep up in tanking equipment. I am going to focus on my WHM.
    Good luck.

I really don't expect statics to work if we try to set everything at a specific time every x time every x day. We really just need to occasionally get together for some partying.
