So I am thinking I want to go with a more quality set of font and icons. The resolution I am at really makes the SE set look shabby. Not really SE's fault, the game wasn't meant to go this detailed.

Now if I could find who has my armor I would be ahead.
Edit: People ask me how to make gil in this game. The answer is that I really don't know. Aside from the obvious collecting everything that drops and selling it, there is harvesting and selling basic resources, and a few BCNMs I have done, and that's all I know.
Most of what I have has been scratched and clawed from scraps, 1000 gil at a time. I am awed at how well I have done for myself as far as equipment is concerned sometimes. So I just dropped 18k on 2 replacement pieces of bone armor. Three more to go and I have 5k. I hope some auctions sell soon. Oh, and another 35k on shihei Ninja tools.

...and when you are done with that; take a folding

I make gil by sitting in Whitegate and whoring out my teleportation services
A blm75/whm37 can send people to their homepoint, their past nation, and to Mea, Holla, and Dem
1000 gil is the typical going rate but sometimes you'll get someone who obviously wants to get somewhere fast because they'll put up an offer like {Retrace} {Can I have it?} {Reward:} 5k. Or sometimes you'll even get something like {Teleport-Dem}x5 {Can I have it?} {Reward:} 10k (like it's any more effort to send a group of people to the crag than it is to just send one)
You'll rarely (if ever) be the only person working Whitegate so you'll need to be quick on the draw with the /pcmd add whoever command (don't bother with /sea whoever and then inviting them that way, by the time your invite goes out every mage in the area will have tried to send their's)
Of course, your profit depends entirely on how many people want teleports and how much they're willing to pay for them
If nobody's shouting for teleports in Whitegate, maybe try Lower Jeuno for a while

You know, I've been thinking about playing FFXI again since I found my old installation CDs in a box while unpacking. However, I'm also a huge fan of Warhammer and might end up playing WAR.
So I was wondering, has PvP been improved? Because honestly, my last experience with PvP was Bastilla or whatever it was called, that overly complex rugby thing they had in the game. I need something with more meat on its bones before I go back to the slavegrind that I remember FFXI being.

Ew. Well, thanks for the info.
Perhaps I will read about the classes added to try to excite myself.
I wish I had the time I had back when I started playing this game to just sit around playing MMOs. Unfortunately, college/work means I don't have 4 hours to spend leveling off Mandragoras. Although that did beat the shit out of Qufim.
That place still haunts my dreams to this day.

Since so much of FFXI's content is PvE, PvP is hard to get into unless you join a group that specifically participates in it. You might be able to find a Ballista or Brenner (instanced PvP Capture-the-flag that you can schedule to your liking), but I've never tried, and don't know anyone who's really bothered, so I don't know how difficult going about that would be.
Also GOD DAMN IT. Saved up for a while to get a Zanbato for my Samurai, and the only one on the auction house is being price gouged by a douchebag. The entire history doesn't go over 50,000, but I can't buy one for like 51 or 52k. Guess I'll just need to shout in Whitegate for the time being.

Oh, don't get me wrong. To this day I maintain that I enjoyed FFXI's story and PvE experience better than WoW's. Unlike WoW that adds stuff without really trying that hard to bring it in line with the storyline of the world, FFXI always set things up in a way where I was like, "Sure, I'll go deep into enemy territory to see the Shadow King's memories. Especially if I get my airpass out of it!"
However, the lack of a real PvP experience is kind of a deal breaker. But thanks for the info guys!

They did it wrong. They spent 10 hours getting to the boss and then 8 trying to figure out how to beat it before giving up. SE probably meant the encounter to be more of a community-server effort, but the LS got greedy for loot and involved as little people as possible, exhausting their members.
The recent update causes this media dubbed "18 hour boss" to despawn after 2 hours. The reason behind this is the players were trying to "Tank n Spank" the boss and not trying tactics, leading to ridiculously long encounter times. To prevent this from happening SE forced the boss to dissapear after a set amount of time. You have 2 hours to figure out how to beat the boss, if not, too bad, SE isn't letting you put yourself in the hospital and write a blog about it.
I've been a long time FFXI player and I stumbled on this forum. I really liked the OP, except for this one blurb. I couldn't find anyone in this thread taking offense to it after using the handy search thread button, so if someone got to this before I did, my apologies. Also, I was not involved in the 18-hour boss fight, nor do I know any of those who were personally, but I read extensively about it. You could read Rukenshin's LiveJournal blog (I'm not going to link it here, I think there's some rule against linking outside sites?) to get the same information I have. I just felt the need to defend fellow endgame players.
So what really happened:
There is only a limited amount of people that can "help" with a boss fight. No end-game boss in this game, to date, requires more than 40ish people to defeat. If SE designed the encounter as a server-wide event, it would have been a huge shift from earlier boss designs. In no way do I think was the LS "greedy for loot." They brought a quite appropriate number of people for the fight.
They never managed to finish the fight. At their current pace, they probably would have taken a total of 20 hours to finish. This LS is considered one of the best geared and most highly skilled LS's in the game, so their pace was probably quite close to the designer-intended pace.
It took a minimal amount of time to get to the boss. Perhaps half an hour to an hour. That time was not included in the 18 hours.
The boss had about 15 different "forms". Each time a form was defeated (reduced to 0 HP) the boss would despawn, respawn as a new form with full health, and engage again. It's a common mechanic in Final Fantasy games. This LS was able to defeat each form in about 45 minutes to an hour and a half, thus making up the 18 hours.
This was never a "Tank n' Spank" fight, and the LS knew that. They extensively used tactics to keep themselves alive and keep the boss under control. Given the existing design of the boss, I believe their tactics were entirely appropriate.
Yes, SE changed the fight to a 2-hour cap, but mostly because they realized their existing design was impossible for a normal group to complete. Their lead designer, Sage Sundi, has mentioned that another boss fight, Absolute Virtue, was designed to take 16 hours. Both fights were capped to 2 hours in the update. You can find Sage Sundi's quote if you read the "Premiere Site Summit 2008" thread on the ffxiclopedia.org forums, under the "FFXIclopedia Announcements" section.
Changing the fights to max out at 2 hours also involved significantly reducing the difficulty of each fight.
In essence, the LS correctly fought the boss as intended, but SE designed the boss (and one other boss) to take 15+ hours. In response to the media outcry, SE nerfed both encounters to allow for a 2-hour time limit.

Actually, many many groups used this strategy. It turns out that the update lowered AV's hp greatly. Using about 12-14 DRKs geared for a zerg, you can deplete his health fast enough to lock him into hp-triggered animations to prevent him from doing anything until he died. Basically, if you did it wrong you would wipe halfway through; if you did it right, he's dead in under 60 seconds.
Unfortunately for SE, they announced a maintenance which would likely correct this strategy a full 3 days in advance, which gave most of the more skilled shells a chance to burn through their pop sets while they were still able to.
Since the 16th he resists souleater and if anyone has even tried attempting him they've posted no information about it. Most groups apparently have their AV items and are content to ignore him now.

I still believe the boss should have been fought with many more people, and traded out at intervals. Complete departure from previous boss fights, sure, but this is only the hardest boss in the game.
I am sure the LS is the best on your server, but really, come on. At what point do you break off and reassess? In this case, way too freakin' late, and they have no one to blame but themselves.

Yup, that's fine. It's clear now that most people on this thread are totally not concerned about endgame, but I just didn't want people to be deterred from it because of that section (and also, obviously, I thought the original post was misinformed). Let me see if I can write a new summary: Why did the 18-hour fight take so long?
SE originally designed it that way.
Due to widespread player and media outcry, SE has significantly reduced the intended time requirements of this boss, as well as one other infamous endgame boss. After this September update, these bosses require a game-enforced maximum of 2 hours to defeat.
Clearly, as many people pointed out, perhaps SE went too far in reducing the difficulty. I'm sure there's still tuning to be done. And yes, perhaps that LS was way too dedicated, since their "break off and reassess" point only happened 18 hours into the fight. I think what happened was, every time they defeated a form, they thought they were oh-so-close to being done.
If you think I distilled the truth of the 18-hour-boss-fight situation too much, I can certainly add more to represent both points of view.
Oh! Congrats to The Dude for being a dad

Due to widespread player and media outcry, SE has significantly reduced the intended time requirements of this boss, as well as one other infamous endgame boss. After this September update, these bosses require a game-enforced maximum of 2 hours to defeat.Clearly, as many people pointed out, perhaps SE went too far in reducing the difficulty.
This morning I could only get Lizzy to spawn once because some JP dude was fucking with the Rock Lizards, and I couldn't explain why he should not do that.

If Carbuncle is the most populated server, in terms of PA forumers, is that U.S guys? or Europe? Or a mix?

Final Fantasy XIV - Masamune Server (Moving to Sargantanas) - Rykosho Hoshikaze

As far as different nations, most of the servers are even up on english/europe/jap/etc. A lot of the PA players are on Carbuncle (at least a lot of the ones that started as PA people, I wasn't a PA person when I started playing, but I moved to Carby when I started posting a decent amount).
Well I dont know anybody else who plays this anymore, I know a few guys who used to play a couple years back, but no longer. Looks like it'd be in my best interest to play on Carbuncle then. Looking forward to getting started with it.
