Man skillchains and magic bursts are my favorite part of the game. It's like, the one mechanic that made it stand out and actually made the whole mandatory grouping thing tolerable.
The problem would be essentially solved if there was a way to strip the Colibri of the Reflect ability.
Well it's also a problem of low HP, why should you go for the magic burst when the colobri is at 2% after 2 weapon skills?
Not doing a magic burst isn't really a problem though, at least not like laying waste to your own party with Reflected Elemental damage spells is a problem.

What's all this solo BLM talk? I don't recall black mages ever being outcasts from parties.
With the Treasures of Aht Urhgan expansion came an enemy type called the Colibri. They're these long-beaked pink tropical birds and I loathe them with every fiber of my being
People found out that they can be quickly and easily killed with just a party consisting of five melee characters and a bard, so a lot of parties just form up and go out to slaughter colibri. Even worse is that they fucking recast any black magic casted on them so black mages are completely and utterly useless against them
And instead of doing something about it, Square absolutely refuses to acknowledge that this problem even exists at all
So basically they ruined the game. Got it. I still miss this game sometimes, because all other MMOs are so childishly easy and none have a story that can compare to FFXI, but I also know that if I came back I would hate it a lot.
Not a ruined game, but I imagine for anybody aspiring to be a Black Mage for their first primary job, that's a long stretch of soloing for somebody's first trip from 40 onwards. A long, lonely road.
That said... SCH's kinda intriguing to me now as well, since I began trying magic in general I've found I love it even more than I thought I would. I'm probably gonna end up having to do that as well, just because it looks really interesting and gets some neat stuff.
And hey, Tier IV nukes, though there's part of me that still wants Tier III -aga magic... just because.

To be a little fair, ToAU also introduced Ebony Pudding and Wamoura Princes, which can be quickly and easily killed with just a party consisting of five black mages and a corsair

I liked scholar a lot when I was leveling it as a subjob for black mage, and if I take another mage job to 75 it'll definitely be scholar
Blm/sch is my favorite job combo now, even though blm/whm is pretty much required for endgame (for stoneskin and reraise)
Also: you don't NEED tier III -aga nukes, one of scholar's stratagems adds AoE to almost any spell

(omg double post)
Almost any spell....
The black magic version will -ga enfeebling and dark magic, no elemental.
The white magic version will -ga enhancing, -na and cure spells.
So you can't really AoE nuke, which is good for stuff like dynamis. However you can AoE gravity, bind, aspir, drain. Which is great for stuff like Einherjar.
AoE stoneskin/phalanx is good for just about anything.
Yeah, I think I'll have to give SCH a solid shot after RDM. Some interesting tricks there.
And as a side project I'll probably struggle my way up to 75 BLM, just because I want to blow shit up. And it sounds like that's precisely what BLM does.
So, what is a good starter class? I've got a friend joining me, and I'm looking for advice on how to get them up, running, and through the subjob quest.
Well what type of job does he want to play? Melee damage? Tank? Support? Nuker? Healer? Theres at least one good job in each of those categories to have at 75.
It's cliché and everything, but getting Warrior to 17-18 is actually a really good idea for a variety of jobs. Warrior is a good low-level subjob for almost every melee job, and it's pretty simple to play as well. If melee is more your style, either Warrior or Monk will save you a lot of time later on.

Or both.
I still recomend taking all six starter jobs to 10 just to feel them out. It doesn't take long in the grand scheme of things, and once you have all six to 10 you can think harder on what you want to take further.

Nice, I got one of these when I wasn't even playing.
Anyway, I dunno about taking them all to 10 before deciding, that can be pretty painful. Also how the jobs play 1-10 is mostly the same and doesn't accurately reflect how they will play later on. Monk 1-18 than warrior 1-30 or 37 is good if he still doesn't know what type he wants to play. Some might say whm because it's used as a sub a lot but there seems to be a strong correlation with people who start on whm and people who quit the game before 18.
So, gardening, and interior design in general I suppose. I bought my first pots and a table the other day, planted my seeds, and I'm waiting on the crystal feeding now. I've got no idea how long it is going to take. I know it was a mistake to not plant all of the same seed type though, since they seem to grow at different rates. Right now I'm running mostly herb seeds, but I'm hoping to farm some wildgrass later on.
Does anyone have any advice to give me on gardening? I'm nervous about getting in to trees because of the time and cost involved. Will my experience with vegetables help me deal with trees? What mobs should I farm for seeds and saplings?
Also, if anyone has any furniture suggestions, I'd appreciate it. Right now it looks like I'm running a grow-room in the back of my mog house. I suppose I should at least get a table to set the plants on.
And that's why Dynamis is pretty much as far as my endgaming goes
Yeah, I got burned out on HNM stuff pretty quick... I really wish there were good ZNM shells that weren't also HNM. Camping stuff, in any game is always the most boring and frustrating thing ever.
I have a new favorite part of besieged. The part where your X-box locks up at the very end of the conflict and you get absolutely no credit for playing, this is now my new favorite part.
Anyone else having issues with that? Just curious, because the last time ffxi started acting up, my machine shat itself during the BLU cutscene, then red-ringed. I think I'm just gonna do things like that on the pc from here on out, and save the x-box for the more casual leveling.
How do you play on an xbox?
Shitty resolution.
Macros with fewer lines than there are equipment slots.
No way to view recast timers on screen.
No way to view buff durations.
No custom status effect icons. (10+ buffs share the same icon)
Seriously, in a game where the developers refuse to ever update the UI post release you just gotta be playing on a PC.
Everyone of those complaints are exactly how the game is on the PC.
The only one that you can "fix" without using Windower or otherwise replacing .dat's is the resolution and that requires a registry hack; the base resolutions offered in the config are shitty like the res on the 360.
The number of macro lines are identical.
Trust me. If this weren't the case there would be no way to backup your settings/macros on the PC then load them on the 360; which you can do. And it works fine.
In summary the only difference between the two is the resolution(both graphics and UI) being locked on the 360.
That's it.
EDIT: Oh and I suppose you can use voice chat on the 360 but no one does, even if they play on the 360 so it's totally useless.
I hear that a lot, it's usually from the people that let my haste down for over a minute, have weak weapon skills and can't land debuffs because they don't macro in enough gear.
So everyone should grab as many third-party mods as possible in order to satisfy your sense of snobbish elitism? Noted.
I've never even heard of half the mods you just listed. They don't strike me as absolute positively must-haves, since I know plenty of excellent players who don't use any mods at all.

I didn't say people who don't mod can't keep me buffed. I said people who can't keep me buffed don't mod.
In a game where partying is basically required I'd like it if the people without the will to sustain a decent xp rate to mod to ease their discomfort with the horrible standard UI.
I mod because 4 hours into Dynamis, a merit party or whatever I'm sick of watching my 1 8 line text box for the "Haste has worn off" message and would rather have the status on my screen like every other game has had for the past 8 years.
So is the Selbina subjob quest still the be all and end all for unlocking subjobs? It's getting about that time for the wife's new character, and we've been grouping mostly in Bubu and Tharongi, haven't actually bothered with the boat yet. My plan had been to drag her to the mines so I could curb stomp some ghouls on my blm, but I'm open to suggestions.
The new adventurer quests and field manuals make the low levels remarkably tolerable. I was very pleasantly surprised by them. Now, the tabs seem sort of retarded, because FFXI needs ANOTHER form of currency like it needs a hole in the head, but other than that.

I've become so disenchanted with Campaign. I was doing well, getting several hundred xp per go on my Scholar just by healing and such. I knew I wasn't getting full credit then, being below 61, but I stuck with it. Now that I'm beyond 61, I tried it again...
...and got the same amount of xp. I then found out that if you're not a melee DD job, or a Paladin tanking stuff, you get jack and squat for Campaign battles. Now I'm just depressed.

If you're going to play sch in campaign you just need to party up. Invite anyone and everyone in the zone, even if they're /anon and aren't searching than start using your aoe buffs. You should be able to enspell yourself and melee while you're casting and get a decent amount of points off it. Every mob in there is actually like lvl37, they just have really high hp and attack power. Don't bother with regens or stoneskin, you want stuff to get hurt so you can dump cures. If anyone there knows anything they will want you in the party for enspell so they can get points from doing magic damage too.
Multi hit weapons are the way to go but the only ones for SCH are extremely hard to get.
edit: oh and don't waste mp on people outside your party, you only get half credit for it. Gogo square for discourage helping others.
