I don't think I've ever had anyone ask me for a party on SCH. In campaign battles where nobody need any healing, I tend to just sit and dispel stuff, and it works kind of decently, especially on Quadav.

Well see when you do that you're only maxing out one category. You should try to fill them all out, melee dmg, magic, buffs, cures. I forget what they all are but doing a variety of things is much more productive.
Also you can't wait for people to invite you. Just /sea area and go down the list with blind invites, people are usually willing to party as it makes it much more enjoyable even if they didn't feel like searching, lots of them don't search because they don't want xp party invites.
I have wanted to play FFXI since launch and didn't get around to it. After all these years and it is still there though. I have played WoW and GW and want to try it, can someone give me some pros/cons to help me make my decision. I have heard it is very difficult which I like but I have also heard you HAVE to be in a party to do anything. Let the discussion begin!

Well, Stig, your AoE buffs suggestion didn't pan out so well. They give little/no xp anymore. I still get 600-700 xp for curing/debuffing while missing attacks in melee, which I guess I can deal with until I get club/staff skilled up.

Results may vary, but I went whm -> blm, and that worked fine until about level 50. Then I started soloing a lot. The last bit of the 1-10 grind is a hassle, but finding parties at low levels with a whm used to be pretty easy.

So I and some other dudes were going to Hell (otherwise known as Ro'Maeve) to help my buddy Sarm unlock his last club weaponskill when HOLY CRAP IT'S SHIKIGAMI WEAPON AND HE JUST WIPED OUT A PARTY AND IS UNCLAIMED
Since he's got a 75 summoner and still doesn't have a yingyang robe we went into full lockdown; Sarm was on white mage, I was on black mage, and the two other guys were monks so they tanked other weapon enemies to pinch Shikigami in so he couldn't get away without linking
To make a long story short, I managed to link about five weapons and a robot on me trying to keep their HP up and died but we didn't get claim, then the dicks who did fucking CALLED FOR HELP when they realized they couldn't win
(for those of you who don't know, calling for help means forfeiting all drops, so it was pretty much them saying "if we can't get a yinyang robe than neither can you assholes")
Their plan backfired though, and nobody else dared touch it while CFH was still up
We didn't get claim when it wore off though, an entirely different group did, and they got the kill
I was dead on the other side of the zone so I don't know if they got the drop or not
All in all the hunt was kind of fun but I feel bad for Sarm; dude really wants a yinyang robe

Doh. I haven't done it since they made the changes but I guess now there are tons of NPC that go around curing people too? Anyway all SE really succeeded in doing with that is making melee/tank jobs the only good jobs for campaign. It's pretty lame.

Well RDM or BLM can be fun starting out. WHM is sort of good but it's hard without a sub job and that can lead to boredom/frustration.
And yea, call for help needs to be removed from the game. The retardation it causes on a daily basis isn't worth the few lvl10s it saves.
Call For Help's only real use is keeping you from gaining ludicrous amounts of Tonberry hate. Outside of that, I never see it used properly except in very rare cases outside of Selbina and Delkfutt's.

Yeah, Field Woundpatchers go around buffing (Shell/Protect IV) and spamming Cure IV and V on folks, both NPC and PC. I think I've even seen them case Raise. A generic grunt NPC tanked one of the more annoying Quadav bosses in a Grauberg campaign battle due to having three Woundpatchers spamming heals on him. It's nice for when you don't have a ton of people at a fort, but if you're trying to heal yourself, it's just frustrating.

Here's the Wiki entry for the specific NPCs I see most often, since I usually do Bastok campaign battles. The pertinent info:
They will cast Blink, Phalanx, Stoneskin, Raise, and up to Protect IV, Shell IV, and Cure V on Campaign NPCs, anyone with Allied Tags on, and Beastmaster pets. Their spells seem to be on a timer, similar to Pixies.

Any of the basic jobs are really, really easy to solo EXP with now about 1-12. They're a lot more on even footing when you're killing easier things. Not to mention Fields of Valor!
trying to get BLM up to 10 before the solo EXP change or FoV was hell

Seconded
Especially because it was my first job ever
I almost quit on my first day because I had so many bullshit deaths
Redmage is probably the most fun starting job, the problem with it is people start thinking they can always play as a melee mage because it's actually really good at it very early in the game.

I leveled it since every black mage guide says it's a good subjob, and I loved it at first
Then I got yelled at for meleeing, so I stayed on the back row from then on
Hey this feels familiar, oh wait maybe it's because this is exactly what I did when I leveled white mage and scholar
The difference being, I actually use those subs. I've been asked to come to something blm/rdm exactly twice (for backup Gravity) and both times there was a rdm who could make it stick every time that I could not
A tip for black mages: blm/whm is obligatory if you want to do any endgame at all (stoneskin, blink, and reraise are your best bets for survivability) but blm/sch is hands down my favorite setup for XP, especially once you hit 70 and get Sublimation. /sch doesn't give you much defense (no stoneskin or reraise, and you'll need to switch to Light Arts and blow a stratagem to cure yourself of status effects), but offensively you'll be super-efficient; you'll use less MP per cast with Dark Arts, you get access to Dispel via Addendum: Black, you get two charges by the time you hit 75 and two stratagems that halve either MP cost or casting time, and since Dark Arts brings Enfeebling skill up your debuffs will stick better. Also in the event you need to backup heal, Light Arts gives you better Healing Magic skill than if you had just subbed whm
That's pretty much what ended up setting me on the path to PLD. I was originally hellbent on RDM untill I found out that there's no way I'd ever be seeing melee action, which sucks because the job that's thematically my favorite ends up stuck in my least favorite role to play in an MMO, full support. I'd do it for friends, but at the moment I don't have many in XI I'd be working with at all consistantly enough to be able to level RDM to 75 anyways.
That said, I'm still looking forwards to PLD immensely, something about the tank role just appeals to me in a way no other role quite does.
And come on, knight in shining armor, what's not to love? And the combo of PLD/RDM looks fun solo, I figure getting RDM to 37 shouldn't be anywhere near as painful for me as 75 would have been.
Wooo, finally got my whm to 37, giving me exactly one subjob on which to take my black mage to 75. I hear blm/sch is pretty sweet in exp groups though, so I guess I'll be leveling that up next.
I thought most blm did /rdm at 75... Though /whm is still required on some stuff when you're expected to do status cures.
Literally zero black mages regularly sub rdm that I've seen
As I said I've been asked to do it exactly twice (once during manaburn, once during Double Dragonian); in every endgame thing I've ever done I was asked to sub whm
Aside from these two instances I've gotten no use out of rdm sub
Apparently I have chosen wisely. Hooray.
I haven't actually done any endgame stuff, or been invited to an endgame shell yet, but I'm only 65. When should I expect to start doing those sorts of things?
Mmmm, all the blms in my LS prefer:
Stoneskin/Blink/Phalanx
7.5% fast cast
slight int boost
dispel (not really used in dyna)
Gotta give the whms something to do...
It's not often that we sac a blm so I guess it's really not much of an issue. It's usually the whms that sac pull.
ToAU missions are beginning to get really irritating with these "cross an invisible threshold, get a cutscene" deals. I go to Naja's to rank up, and get sucked into a twenty minute cutscene, thus making my LS have to wait on me before we can do more Assaults.

Now if only the required items for the mission Fetichism would drop.

That one is actually a little hard for a level 10. If you stay out in the Gustaberg ara the drop rate is pretty low. They drop more often in the mines, but that is a bit more dangerous.
If I recall correctly though, the items are not (ex). Check the auction house for them.

Hey guys, I'm pretty new around here. A long time ago, I was on Penny Arcade and decided to check out the forums. I saw this and it made me want to play FFXI even more. I ended up playing for the summer but quit in the end. I reactivated my account today, so I decided to finally come here and post. I went on Carbuncle because I had intentions of joining these forums but never did. I thought it seemed like there was a pretty solid FFXI community compared to other sites. Anyway, do you guys have a linkshell or something I could join? Only if you're okay with it, though, I'm only lvl 19. Thanks!
There is not a PA linkshell but those of us on Carbuncle usually hang out on the same one. Look for one of us in game and we might be able to hook you up with a pearl.

It's amazing how many people are being such big babies over it
Especially on BlueGartr
"a bloo bloo i used an exploit and got banned WHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO ME fuck u SE you have no right to do this"
I'm sorry, have you read the terms of service at all
"omg thats rich coming from a noob like u FU SE I AM LEAVING FOREVER"
And nothing of value was lost
Oh well, if it means less of those stuck-up jerks then it can't possibly be a bad thing

LOL'ing hard. Trolling harder.
I like how Lordwafik in particular was being big baby butthurt over it and acting like a child in the thread only to later tell people to grow up.
The fact that one person was posting all the shit talk done by those now banned is just comedy gold.
BG needs to stand for ButthurtGamers at this point.
The worst part is that they're on my server! I used to /check people and see they were in BlueGartr and be like "oh wow, that guy must be good"
Then I went to their forum and oh my God
BlueGartr is to Final Fantasy XI, as Smashboards is to Smash Bros, as NMA is to Fallout
