my xbox is dead: SOLVED (but not really, just lock it)
it has been dead a few hours. the red light thingy. it's not been even a year since i got it. i thought it was one of the new ones that weren't supposed to do that. anyways, is there anything i can do before i call them and have to send it in?
this really sucks because my computer is also messed up and can't play decent games.
mine just died tonight. Apparently there is a 'towel trick' where one disconnects the HD and everything else but power, turns it on, wraps it in several towels and leaves it for about 25 mins. Turn it off, allow to cool for a few mins and power it back on.
Seems credible, there were a lot of different sources on this and examples all over Youtube. Apparently mild overheating causes a chip reset. Ima try it right now, actually.

Do NOT use the towel trick. It's not a chip reset. It will cause you more trouble as it helps to destroy the innards of the 360. This is a big part of why so many 360 refurbs you receive back from MS die horribly.

They're willing to fix/replace it for free, just send it in and get it fixed.. it's not worth the risk of you doing something even worse and possibly voiding your warranty to play it for an extra week (and the towel thing, even if it did get it to work temporarily, doesn't solve the actual cause of the red ring, so you're going to have to get it repaired in the very near future anyway)
