Wow. I don't think there's anything bad to say at this point. I envy you, you've gotten to the point where skill isn't an issue and you can start experimenting with different forms and compositions.
Wait, I think the girl with the one boob exposed has a way too thin neck.
Seriously, though -- amazing stuff. How old are you again? I thought you were in your early twenties, so I just hope I can reach your level at some point (during or after college, obviously.) Man. I love that last one too. Awesome colors. Also, just to top off my blatant ass-patting, I thought I'd let you know that I saved pretty much all of those.
Awesome work. It's definitely original from all I've seen and that's sweet. No. 5 is my favorite, very clean looking and nice proportions. Where do you get your poses? References or just make 'em up?
I love your stuff wakka, the one thing thats starting to get monotonous though is the body types. 90% of all the girls are pretty much the same body with different heads. (Expertly rendered and very pretty of course)
You should mix it up though. Draw some Amazons (like Sally on Third Rock), or some munchkins like Natalie Portman or something. Maybe some chicks with a little wider hips or a pooch or something.

Just my opinion. Its all really good though
bahaha I lol'd on that one. Anyways yeah awesome as usually wakka :^:
As always, good stuff. I don't enjoy your sketches as much as your paintings, that's for damn sure. (that is to say, your paintings are amazing)
I really only have one crit, and that's that the hands could look better. The whole figure is full of attitude but when I get to the hands, the lines just don't look as confident.
Some of your sketches have nice looking hands, so I'm not sure if it's just that you're too lazy to work on em for a simple sketch or that it's a (gasp) weakness. I'm thinking the former though.
Are you thinking of going into fashion illustration?
Edit: I think it's weird the way you always have women completely naked except for a piece of underwear. Is that intentional? I can think of a thousand reasons, but I'm just curious if it's intended or not.
yeah, that neck is really thin. Didn't really want to erase it then redraw it, though.
and Im 20. just turned 20 actually.
Ah, yes. Well. I'm 17 and it'll be a miracle if I can do stuff like this within three years. Also, I like the big eyes. Don't listen to Salti lol
I'm 18 and it'll be a miracle if I can do half the stuff that wakka can do... http://xal.deviantart.com -> see? I SUCK
In high school i had like, what, 2 classes over 4 years. They were bad art classes that taught me absolutely nothing. I took 3 classes outside of school at the Academy of Art University (san francisco) and I loved them, I learned a lot - but after that I was busy trying to maintain a good GPA and trying to get into a good college - so I never really had time to draw. In addition to that looking around on deviantart just added to my stress and frustration after seeing 13 year olds doing original photorealistic pencil drawings pieces. That like, crushed my artistic spirit...
So I'm going into college this saturday, and I'm hoping that I can pull my shit together over these next 4 years and become familiar enough with forms and such to draw magnificent original pieces of art. IE: anything wakka or 90% of regular posters here produce.
Do you guys think it's even possible for me to improve up to some of your skill levels in 4 years? ie: wakka and Frank's TMND? it's a bit discouraging to see that people around your age are lightyears ahead of you in terms of skill, but I guess it's also a motivator to play some fierce "catch up" >_>
I guess I should have made a topic for this, as I'm sure I'm not the only one in this situation - asking for advice and such....but I didn't know whether to post it in Artist's Corner or Help...because it's an art q but it's a help q too...
>_< OH RIGHTO!
wakka, you're super talented
keep making amazing artwork!

Already knowing the greatness of you painted pieces, it is really cool to see your notes. Your monsters are also tops, so I would enjoy seeing more creepy things as well.
I can see what you mean by static. It's an almost centered design. The coloring saves it I think. You can't go wrong with purple/orange/yellow triad. It's one of those ones that actually appears in nature. I think if I were to attempt this same painting, I'd fool with the camera height. The setting and lighting are fine and the placement of the figure isn't bad. It just feels like an awkward angle. It's not quite normal eye level (5ft) and it's not low (<2 ft). It's a boring inbetween height.
Sometimes it's wierd when people do a sketch and try to paint a background straight into photoshop. You've done a really good job hiding it though. The color and, as always, the overall value placement is sweet. Some people really have trouble beleiving that background is light and the foreground is dark (higher contrast).
I don't know if that helps or if that's just telling you what you already know. In my experience, the greater the artist, the harder time they have finding out why their stuff isn't working. I have this habit of explaining why things aren't working. In short, "stop me if you've heard this one."
I like the angles of the face when you don't draw the 3/4 view. Count the total faces, then count how many are 3/4. Such anatomy is ruined by such a boring face, IMHO. But keep on rockin, I love your pencils.
The whole age thing isn't really a factor anymore. Everytime someone asks me my age, the answer is usually "oh ok". Which Im not exactly too sure what that means.
I have been working on getting other angles for faces though. its just one of those things that you don't really think too much about while drawing.
The tiny pupils on all of your faces make them seem crazy paranoid or blind. Take that for what it's worth. It certainly works with a lot of the figures you draw ("no pants? fuckit, I'm crazy").
Coool stuff. It definitely leaves me wanting more. If I had to crit anything, I'd just say that some of the wrists look a little thick and the hips are sometimes too short, maybe. Otherwise, really great. You have some classy ideas. I'd like to see some more bright colors, like the chick with the yellow panties. Cute. I can only recall on other piece you made with bright colors like those, and it was sweet. Keep it up.

I am Man-yam, part man, and part yam. I love yams and I love mans, and what a yam-man I am.
i think youve gotten to the point where youve got the anatomy down, just need to work on emotion. put more story behind the illustrations than just cool costumed hottie in cool pose. the 3/4 views dont bother me. its pretty standard for portraits.
Yes! This one should be in Shadow of the Colossus 2, Just grab that tail.
EDIT: I don't know how you do things like this. When I look at your stuff I see a great combination of real world and fantasy. Whenever I approach a project, I start defining form by laying out thick broad strokes of ink. I guess that is why I am a cartoonist.
I dont know, cool costum chicks is kinda my thing.
and I really have felt like I have been wanting to do more. But everytime I try to start another project nothings coming out.
Disclaimer: It's possible that I'm reading way too much into this and I'm just a blubbering idiot but I'm going to say it anyways.
I know it's heresy to speak against the great wakkawa, but honestly I think you're in a rut. It's a glorious and beautiful rut but it's still a rut.
If you're content with just drawing beautiful women with outlandish costumes and fantastic monsters then by all means disregard anything I say, clearly you're very good at it and you enjoy it a lot, but the fact that you seem to want to try new things seems to disagree with that.
I think everybody here would like to see you branch out and try new subject matter. Hell, most people get excited when you even draw masculine figures, which I think really says a lot about how closely you've really been sticking to your comfort zone. I might be completely wrong but it seems like the reason nothing comes out is because you're so used to doing "your thing" so you don't know how to tackle new stuff right away and it might be frustrating. If that's the case then I really encourage you to force yourself to try find new and interesting content to get involved in.
I have great respect for your work wakkawa but I've been seeing you pump out the same character shots and creature shots for years. Granted they're beautiful and awesome, but something fresh would be even MORE awesome.
Again, if you think I'm totally wrong I'll be the first one to suggest putting a shoe in my mouth.
addendum: I want to reiterate that your stylistic choices in terms of color, technique and design are almost always new and inventive, it's the fact that it's always boobs mechas and monsters~
i think coming up with stories or concepts before you put the pencil to paper would be the best way, or at least one of the ways to go about getting out of drawing the same things.
if youd ever hang out with me ill share the little tips that i got my my concept class and comic writing class.
I really like your pencil style - my human figure instructor really stressed that style and I can see why. I don't do too much pencil work these days (mostly ink) - how did you learn / what was a good source for you in terms of pencil technique?
Hunter, I would totally hang out with you but I have had like 30 other damn people ask me to draw with them and Im pretty anti-social, so.....
here are some of my figure drawing things. I have a hard time doing these because my vision is shit, and I just can't see the details. Especially around the face.
Though I do think Im getting better at it. I just haven't had any real figure drawing classes yet. Hell, this is the first time I have actually done any figure study.

wakkawa, I have to ask; What college are you enrolled at? Also, what is your curriculum like?
I ask these things because I want to do digital art in college but have no idea what classes to take. It would really help out if you could answer this.

Love the paintings. Paintings are so much more forgiving than sketches.

What classes did you take at AAU? Which teachers?
This was one of the first things I did for the blizzard art contest. Started a new one though, this one is too static.
I finished this like a couple days before they started taking submissions.

dont let your teachers bully you into using their style, or any style. just draw what you see and your style will come through practice.
Whoops. I meant *technique*, not style. Slight difference lol.
