I'm trying to broaden my tastes a little bit from rock and alternative (and am also trying to make my stereo bump a little more) so I'm hoping to get some more of a rap and hip-hop collection. I already have some of the popular stuff - right now I'm playing "Nuthin but a G-Thang" and I got some Kanye, Fort Minor, etc - but more stuff would be cool that I could fit onto some CDs. Anything new or old, popular or not is fine - just as long as you think it's good. I got 300 bucks laying around in my bank account just waiting to be spent so suggest me some music to get off iTunes!

Sadat X, El-P, Aesop Rock, Wale (he made a (free (as are all of his works as of yet, I do believe)) mixtape inspired by seinfeld. seinfeld. check his myspace), Living Legends, Black Star, Binary Star, Diverse (his album One A.M. is really great), Jedi Mind Tricks, Army of the Pharoahs (and all, like, 20 members' solo work--"The Gatalog" by Celph Titled is a 40-track powerhouse of awesome) Murs, MF Doom is good (also look up the same guy as King Geedorah, Viktor Vaughn, uhhh check his wiki he has about a thousand aliases) (also look up the album The Mouse And The Mask by "DangerDoom," it's him and Danger Mouse and features clips from Adult Swim on Comedy Central). Deltron 3030 is also classic (as is most stuff by Del The Funkee Homosapien).
If you aren't afraid to do a little hunting, Andre Nickatina, Cellski, Equipto are all legends local to the San Francisco Bay Area (holla).
Great topic :^: gives me an excuse to talk about rap and look at youtube vids of classic tracks. Mine are mostly the people I think of as all time (mainstream) greats in the rap game.
There's also:
Outkast
Common
Mos Def and Talib Kweli
The Roots
Wu-tang
Rakim
A Tribe Called Quest
the list could go on forever.... let us know what you like and we can hook you up with more shit in that style
Right on, thanks for the huge response everyone. So far tonight, I've listened to Wu Tang Clan, Genius/GZA, Nas, People Under the Stairs, MF Doom, and I'm about to listen to all the stuff posted by valiance. So far, I've liked it all.
I am also downloading "The Chronic" by Dr. Dre, I think it'll make a great addition to my rapidly growing collection. Once again, thanks again everyone. :^:

Lemme know what you think. You can hit me on AIM if you're quick about it.. I'm about to crash.
Listening to the stuff posted, I know that I definitely like Lupe Fiasco, Nas and Tupac the most. I didn't listen to much Jay-Z, but I'll listen to him tomorrow along with some OutKast, Jurassic 5, Mos Def, Common, A Tribe Called Quest and Talib Kweli tomorrow.
I'm out for the night. Thanks for the suggestions again.
It would definitely be helpful to know what you're liking most, and what you like about it.
Or, you could take the stuff that you like and go make a pandora.com station out of it. That's what I do when the stuff I'm listening to starts feeling a little stale.

Gotta download Mos Def and Talib Kweli's collab work, BlackStar. Some good shit there.
And say what you will about Lollipop, Lil Wayne is easily the most quotable and one of the most prolific rappers still in the spotlight right now. Pick up Tha Carter III, cause it really is a good album, but go to mixtapetorrent.com and download his Da Drought mixtapes, especially Da Drought III. He released about 50 mixtapes for free between Tha Carter II and III, they're all up on that website.
Edit: "It's a new game and I'm the coach like Avery,
Leave it to the flow and gettin dough like a bakery,
I dont really want to, but these n****s makin' me,
Put a motherfucker on ice like the Maple Leafs,
Thats a hockey team, and I ain't on no hockey team,
But I'm a champion, where's the fuckin Rocky theme?
Damn, rest in peace Apollo Creed,
I'm a monster, everyday is Halloween!"
Make sure you get all of Kanye West's albums, especially Late Registration.
Lupe Fiasco was mentioned, and he is impressing me more and more every day. He has so many mixtapes with album quality songs. Each day I hear a new song that I never knew existed.
Its slightly more out there. (Instrumental Hip-hop) but DJ Shadow's Endtroducing... is incredible.

Oh and a classic that no one EVER mentions is EPMD.
I dont see who could beat 2Pac... they're is other rappers I enjoy, but 2Pac is in a class of his own.
Personally I think Jay-Z is the best rapper ever.
I mean, ok I said it.
The best...brand icon maybe, but definitely not the best rapper ever. But anyways, this isn't what this thread is about. Someone should most definitely start a debate about "best rapper alive". At least we can't shoot each other on here over it.
I dont see who could beat 2Pac... they're is other rappers I enjoy, but 2Pac is in a class of his own.
Personally I think Jay-Z is the best rapper ever.

Nas is better than Jay.
Personally I feel Big > Pac. Pac is the more versatile, more prolific, deeper artist, but I've always preferred BIG. I need to give Pac a more thorough listen though. I never gave him a chance to grow on me (like some other 5 star rappers like Common)
Nas > Jay. I can understand people giving me shit for Big > Pac, I understand it's a ludicrous assertion objectively, but I will not budge on Nas >>> Jay. There's just no way. I'm Team Nas all day every day.
We need more rap/hip-hop topics on PA. Maybe I'll make that GOAT thread so we can get into it further.
You people really aren't posting enough youtube links.
Mos Def and Talib Kweli Are BlackstarSo fuckin good. One of my favorite hip hop duos. Second only to Outkast (sides Kast I'd put them up against Clipse or anyone else you care to name).
Outkast Best group in hip hop. Ever. Period. Yes, they're better than Tribe, and De La Soul, and Public Enemy, and the Wu, and anyone who you care to name. Andre 3K is so out of control on his own.... throw in Big Boi and its a rap... If you don't know Outkast do yourself a favor and go peep their shit. Even if you think you know Outkast, go back and listen to them again. These guys are unbelievable.
OHHHH shiiit. Shame on me. And shame on the rest of us. Noone's mentioned Big L or Big Pun yet. :v: Man I'm not even much of a hip hop head compared to the real rap nerds, I can only imagine how many other greats I've missed :v:
Jay-Z's problem is that he has hardly anything to say on any subject except himself. A Jay-Z album can be counted on for some good production and some solid, occaisionally brilliant lyricism, and not all that much else. Keep in mind, his stuff is still mostly excellent, but the subject matter is something that will always keep him a step below Nas and Tupac in my mind. This is the same reason Pac was always better than BIG, too.
Honestly, if you don't get a bunch of Tupac stuff to listen to you are doing yourself a disservice as a hip-hop listener. His music is so good.
Everything being mentioned is good, but it's hard to make reccomendations with so little to go on.
I've been enjoying Swollen Members lately; the beats on Bad Dreams are really good. It's like, in some alternate universe, if Tool had been a hip hop group, they might've sounded like this.
Eat it You Nasty Pig. on

I don't want to derail this thread any further so I'll just say: I don't think music needs to make a statement to be considered 'the best'. 'The most influential', sure, because portentous content is rather endemic to that grade, but in no way does "good" rap need to be "important" rap or "meaningful" rap.
Brenda's Got A Baby is a good song, sure, and it means something- it's one of my favorite Tupac songs, in fact. The fact that is has a message, though, doesn't make it any 'better a song' than, say, Heart of the City... which is purely self-aggrandizing and self-indulgent. It's fun, though, the beat is fantastic, and the lyrics are incredible. Not an 'important' song, but in my opinion one of the best hip hop songs ever.
And I apologize again for the derailment. I just don't want the OP to shortchange H-O-...(ah, you know what I'm saying. ;-) )

Pretty much every OutKast CD is excellent but this is one of the best.
Lupe Fiasco Lupe's the new hip hop Jesus. His debut Food and Liquor and his soph album The Cool were both incredibly well received in the hip hop community, on pop charts, and had lots of crossover appeal. Good for someone new to rap imo.

Nas One of the all time greats, possibly the greatest rapper alive. Everything off his first album (Illmatic) is classic. If you like Nas you have TONS of great material to listen to.

Jay-Z Hova! Aside from Nas, Jay is probably the other biggest contender for greatest rapper alive. His debut Reasonable Doubt was a classic (you'll start to notice a pattern here). Again, Jay has a really deep catalogue, having been in the game for over a decade now.

Tupac Probably the greatest rapper ever. Tupac was incredibly prolific, intelligent, and did everything from hardcore gangsta rap, to social commentary, to songs about his mom. He did everything and he did everything well. There's also his beef with Biggie and his subsequent killing but don't worry about that now. Just enjoy.

Biggie Biggie vs. Pac was the Nas vs Jay of its time (though a lot more lopsided) I prefer Big, but noone says you can't enjoy both. Quite a bit more one-dimensional than Pac, Big is still one of the all-time greats. Ready to Die (debut), and Life After Death were both classics. His life was cut short pretty early and he was nowhere near as prolific as Pac or Nas or Jay.
