At the very least StarCraft and WoW are hybrid discs.

So that's at least three games that you can just install right off the disc. Someone also posted a guide on taking mac demos and making them full games with the data from the PC version's disc, so you should have plenty of options.

Very interesting. I do own WoW so I can give that a try. I'm going to have to find a list to see what other games are out there that fall into this category.

I'm gearing up to buy a Macbook, but I'm a bit paranoid about buying now before Leopard comes out.
I'm afraid I might pull a Leo Laporte (Something for all you Macbreak weekly listeners).

Can't you like hold play or something to wake it up? I know you can put your Mac to sleep his way.

You do the same to wake it, a long press of the play/pause button...

So after just finding out that new piece of information on waking/sleeping a MacBook w/the Remote, I wanted to find more on the Apple Remote on wikipedia, as I was really curious how you go about replacing the battery. You can "rest" the remote on the top left/right part of the monitor, wtf? I thought I knew my MacBook inside out, sheesh Apple, stop spoiling me.

There's a similar spot on the right side of the iMac. I keep mine there. It can still hit the sensor, so it's very convenient.

    Handy. Didn't know that.
Maybe you should remove a certain file before showing screencaps. This is a touchy subject here at the forums.
I don't know about other Blizzard games, but I know that Warcraft 3 and its expansion just have one disc for both versions, so if you own that you can install it on your new macbook just like you would on a PC.

Most of Blizzard's games have the OSX verisons on the disc. But make sure that you'll download the Intel patch otherwise it is running through slow-as-molasses Rosetta Emulation. ("Back then" Macs were PowerPC only)

For Diablo II you most likely need the alternative OSX installer. It might be that there is no universal binary for Diablo - but it should be smooth sailing even in an emulated environment.

    A few quick questions:
Is there an application that will give me a HDD activity indicator? I had this on my PPC Mac like waaaay back when I was in design school...does this exist for a MBP?

Also, sorry if this has been covered in this thread already, but I'm at work and can't read the whole thing now...I find my MBP is running hot. I know this is a widespread issue. Right now it's at 56.0 degrees according to temperature monitor Lite. earlier today it got up to almost 70. I do run it pretty hard. Lots of apps open, big Photoshop files, etc. should i install a fan speed tweak? which one? what temp should it be running at?

one more thing: i find the system hangs for a while sometimes.... i cant confirm if this is due to overheating or not as i didnt have the temp monitor at the time. I also find sluggish performance sometimes too. thoughts?

    MacBook Pro. C2D 2.33GHz, 2GB Ram

    thanks.

My fiance has a Revision B Macbook Pro (2GHz CD, 1GB mem) and it gets really hot like yours does. There was a huge thing last year when people were cracking the cases of their MBPs only to see that the Apple assembly plants were literally caking thermal grease on the processor. I can't remember if Apple responded to that specific claim, but the company did publish a support article on the website essentially saying that their notebooks (not laptops) should only be used on a hard, flat surface and not your lap because the heat generated by the machine can burn your skin.

Since "It's too hot" isn't covered by Apple's warranty, I have been using smcFanControl (linky) to change the speeds at which the internal cooling fans run on our MBP and regular Macbook. I have it set to run at 3000 RPM (it goes to 5 or 6K IIRC), which is twice as fast as the system default. Having the fans run faster does create more noise, but I can live with slightly louder fans more than I can with a laptop that is too hot to touch. On average, my machines run 10-15 degrees (Celsius) cooler with smc running, depending on the workload.

Thanks for the reply. Luckilly I'm mostly using it on a desk or table. If I do use it on my lap, its only for the internets, and maybe light photoshopping, not major design work....however, the heat from the bottom isnt even my main concern...its the heat that radiates off the keyboard. My fingers will almost break a sweat if they are on there too long. Also, the strip above the FKeys. I can only touch that for like 5 seconds before I can't take it anymore....I will look into the link you provided. Thanks again!

    Having an Adium issue:

I can't send files. When I try, it tells me "9:32 PM THEOTHERPERSON cancelled the transfer of file.extension" The other person, though, says they are not canceling the transfer.

I can receive files just fine.

This is over the AIM network, if it matters.

What do I do to fix this? It's only been an issue for the last two or so Adium revisions, if I remember correctly. Before that I could send fine.

Adium was updated a few days ago-- do you have the most recent version? I could have sworn I saw in the changelog stuff about file transfers.

Hey lads, I've got an older PowerMac G4 that I'm working on here. It's got AGP video.

I've just installed a wireless card in one of the PCI slots - no matter which slot I use, it won't show video on the screen. If I pull the wireless card, I've got video. Any ideas?

It's very nice. For those of you that install it, make sure you try out Uno Shade, because the Default Uno was a little too bright-whitish grey for me, but Shade is much improved.

Fire up Activity Monitor (/Applications/Utilities/) and double click on the process you want to examine. In the window that comes up select "Open Files and Ports" tab and you're golden. A lot of times people don't realize they're running an application off of a disk image and then try to delete that disk image. This may be happening to you. If you've got a disk image on your desktop (it looks like a white floppy drive by default) and are running a program from inside of it you need to drag that application to /Applications or somewhere so you can unmount the disk image and delete it.

I favor the lighter one myself, with original aqua for non-unified and iTunes. I found that Safari in particular had readability issues with the darker Uno. Always did hate how dark brushed metal was anyway...

Does this thread still function as an alternative iPod thread? If so, I have a question: How do the modern iPods recharge? Do they just sync with the computer via USB port? Or do they have a new power adaptor that lets them plug into a normal outlet? I'm asking because I got the 4th gen iPod (the click wheel, no photo/video one,) in 2005. It uses the USB to sync/recharge or a FireWire and adapter to recharge elsewhere, but for the second time, my FireWire wore out, and now I am having a hard time getting the FireWire replaced with my service plan. Is there any alternative to using one? Or are people never recharging away from home anymore? The sudden disappearance of what I considered a crucial piece of hardware for a device less than two years is baffling to me.

Newer iPods come with a wall wart that the USB cable plugs into AFAIK (my finace's nano came with this, anyways), the same way that the firewire cable plugs into the wall wart that came with the 4th Gen (same model I have, though I've never had a cable "wear out").
