THE OFFICIAL MACINTOSH THREAD.
for pretty much everything made by Apple that is not the iPod.
____________________________________________________________

So I made the original thread when I first got my iMac Core Duo. Since then I've pretty much figured out what you need to get everything up to snuff.

Video Playback:

VLC: This will cover pretty much everything except QT. EDIT: VLC now handles WMV like a charm, so yay!

Flip4Mac: Plug this into QT to handle all your WMV/wmv streaming needs.

Torrents:

Azureus: My personal favorite, with a great suite of options, and it seems to have more success in general at connecting to trackers.

Bits on Wheels: Kinda bare-bones, but completely native, if thats your thing.

[Chat] software:

Adium: My personal favorite chat program, and probably the only one you'll need besides...

Snak: mIRC for the mac. Yessir.

Miscellaneous:

Connect 360: If you have an XBOX360, but not a PC, and want music etc. on your BOX, this is your program.

USB Overdrive: If you don't use the mighty mouse (and who could blame you?) or even if you do, you will probably like this plug in.

_______________________________________________________

Also make sure to check out Apple's site now and then, they put up nice streams of all their keynotes, and have some great support.

So, yeah, ... macs rule.

I have heard recent rumblings of a new Mac Cube in the works.

Engadget just had an article about a week ago where they found a recent Apple patent for a "cube shaped computer case".

Hopefully that's correct and we see something soon. Apple have left a big gap in their range currently.

Are there just people that sit around looking for new patents from big companies to try to guess what their new product(s) will be?

I'm sure some people get a kick out of researching patents, and then there will be those in the patent industry or some other profession that causes them to be aware and it gets onto the net and spreads.

I will post this since it didn't get answered in the old one

I was in the store today talking to a guy and we went over the differences between the 1.83 and the 2.0. I am a student with a budget and I can't really spend to much money, does the extra .17 ghz really make much of a difference. The guy at the store said basically when I am burning things.

I will mostly be using this for design purposes (Photoshop, InDesign)

So I decided to buy a Mac for college after being a lifetime Windows user. I justified buying the MacBook Pro because I would be able to run Windows for mostly everything.

It's two months later and I havent even installed Boot Camp. Great computer and great OS!

I doubt that anyone would notice such a small jump in CPU power. a ram upgrade would make a far bigger difference performance wise than an extra 170 mhz.

depends on your defineition of cheap, but a refurbed iBook or Macbook would do that just fine.

Apple doesn't have a huge selection. You obviously are in the Macbook range, and proably the low end model for the price.

Yeah a simple macbook is all you need. You can choose what you want or not in the customization section, but there isn't much to customize anyways.

8Gb of flash memory isn't cheap. If it turns out to be compact flash, there could be a recurrance of hobbyist photographers buying them just to rip them out for their camera.

I bought my macbook a couple weeks ago. I put bootcamp on it like the 3rd day I had it and I think I've booted into windows like once since then.

I come home and drink a beer, put the macbook on the table and do whatever I want. Having a laptop is so liberating...having os x on said laptop is like reaching the mountaintop.

Has anyone here used Transmission for Bittorrent? It's the best BT client I've found for the mac...largely because the GUI is so pleasing to the eye and...well...Apple-ish. I haven't tried the Bits-on-wheels program yet though.

And anyone else here waiting on a MacBook to return from repair for the RSD? I'm so lonely without it.

I love this program, but the only thing I don't like about it is the fact that you can't decide with files within a torrent you want to exclude...other than that, it's fantastic. Azureus runs a bit slow on my PowerBook.

All the other design students are making me jealous with their fully-loaded 17in Macbook Pros. As a graphic designer, would I really need a 17inch model, or can I go the 15inch route? I have a monitor at home with a DVI connection, so it's not like I can't connect it to a higher-resolution screen.

Won't be able to afford one without a loan, so I'm SOL until at least winter...which is hopefully not long before Adobe CS3 suite comes out, which should work natively with Intel-based macs. Hooray!

I'd get the 15 inch. Processor speed differences are negligible at this point, and with the 17 inch, you lose portability.

It looks like everyone is having different problems with it:
I just got the problem, when it played fine for me on the desktop while browsing the net.

I like playing music in the background while playing PC games sometimes. especially MMOs.

I noticed that the skipping/distortion bug appears when something else is also using the soundcard at the same time. In my case, it was a game.

Once I disabled all sound from the game, and restarted iTunes, that fixed the problem so far. I'm typing this message with iTunes and Silkroad (MMO) running at the same time.

iTunes used to play music just fine when playing games with sound being used by the game before. This is new.

Can we add Quicksilver, Vienna (or NetNewsWire) and Menuet to the OP please? Oh, and iTerm, PSPWare, Cyberduck, Fugu, Fink, Handbrake, Poisoned, Seashore, TextMate and Smultron.

    Thanks ;)

Oh, and something about the Macbook vs Macbook Pro thing. About how the only difference is integrated graphics, so, right now, the MBP does not represent good value for money against the Macbook and spending the extra cash on a bigger monitor. If the MBP gets a Core2 Duo upgrade, then it's worth more consideration.

    Yay.

Hey Mac thread, I'm thinking of sticking my macbook on a stand when I'm at home and using a cordless mouse and keyboard. Which is better to shoot for, a bluetooth Mac keyboard and Mighty Mouse (expensive option), or a cheap(er) Logitech RF combo? I could tolerate an RF dongle as long as it's not big and heavy enough to drag a Macbook of it's stand/riser.

Heya, Mackies :D I've got a question for you -- my fiance's a designer and she currently has a G5 20" iMac (the one without the iSight built in), which she uses for Abode CS2 and all of the other designer-y programs.

She's moving in with me, and her mother floated the idea of keeping my fiance's mac and instead buying one of the new Intel iMacs for her. However, I did some research and found that there's no universal setup for CS2, so it would be running through Rosetta and allegedly takes a performance hit as a result.

So: Any opinions on if we should take up the offer for the Intel iMac or stick with our G5? Also, will the inevitable Adobe CS3 have a universal binary, and are there any release rumors of that coming down the pipeline soon?
