So I'm in the market for a new set of speakers, and I'm completely out of the loop. My parents own a set of Klipsch speakers that I like, and I might end up just getting the same thing for myself:
However, the internet seems to be in love with these speakers:.
I was wondering if you guys had other recommendations on nice speaker sets? I don't have a particular price point in mind, but I stress value. If you know of a set of remarkably capable set of speakers for only $50 I would love to hear about it. If you got a $300 set that has lasted you for years and produces incredible sound, I would love to hear about that too. These are mostly for music use, video games are only a secondary concern.
Ideally, a 2.1 sound system or better that can fit in a relatively small room. Also, value.
They're both THX certified which is good. i personally own the Klipsch and would never own anything else, and if you already know the Klipsch sound amazing i would go with those. Also you can find those a hell of a lot cheaper than that amazon link.

Holy crap, I first looked at the Best Buy link you provided, and thought: "Hey, that's more expensive than Amazon's price". And then I clicked on the Amazon link for posterity.
What happened to Amazon's $150 price stock? Hopefully they restock soon. $349 is highway robbery considering Klipsch's MSRP is set to $150.

It's been so long since I've posted here, I've removed my signature since most of what I had here were broken links. Shows over, you can carry on to the next post.
This entire speaker line just sounds fantastic. They have been updated but look for any model with a small downward woofer built into the speaker and they will be money. They usually cost about $80 - $100.
I actually have had Altec Lansing 4100's for the past couple of years that are great. I got them insanely cheap (~$40) on clearance at MicroCenter.
I've had that Klipsch system for over two years and I didn't even pay $349 for it then. I've been pretty happy with them, I really dig the input on the side so I can hook my Zune dock straight into it as well as my computer.

I have the black version of the updated Altec Lansing design and it does sound fantastic. I can't really vouch for their cheaper models, but with speakers you really do get what you pay for.
I do recall reading that pretty much all non-audiophile (read: non-$Eurasia) speakers built nowadays can't hold a candle to ones built 20 or more years ago, is there any truth to that and could anyone explain why?
they still work today perfectly, the woofer is a monster, and the sound quality is amazing. also, the price has dropped considerably since (I paid about $250, they're about $175 now)
my 2cents!

They have a small midrange speaker pointing down onto the surface that they sit on. It basically gives you a 3-way computer speaker and I have always found them to sound incredible. There is an updated model available: http://www.alteclansing.com/index.php?file=north_product_detail&iproduct_id=vs4121.

It would also be the appropriate forum for these types of threads!
