Space combat tabletop games?

Basically I am looking at my option for space fleet combat boardgames besides Battlefleet Gothic, as I really don't want to have to spend the money to get into it as much as I know I eventually would...

I have been looking at one called Starmada From MJ12 games ( http://www.mj12games.com/ )

It seems to fit the kinda game I'd like to play, and has many options for creating custom ships and fleets, and it seems like it could be pretty cheap to get into at 12 bucks for the PDF from E23.

Maybe some opinions and reviews? Perhaps suggestions for another game instead?

I've never played Starmada so I can't comment on it, but I do have a few other suggestions.

Federation Commander If you're into Star Trek at all this is a great game, It's kind of a streamlined version of Starfleet battles and it's good fun.

I haven't played them but I've heard good things about Hard Vacuum and Full Thrust

My friends have been having fun with the starwars collectible game, although that doesn't have that strong of a mini element.

Go hunt down Starfleet Battles if you want to make your brains bleed.

You need to calculate the amount of power you're putting into engines so you can calculate your speed, which then allows you to calculate how many degrees you're turning...

And then you need to turn it into hex precision.

Play BFG and just use paper printouts for the ships. I know Ein did a while bunch of Ork ship graphics a while back.

Just copy the images from the pdfs and stick them on some sort of stand. You're good to go.

Just downloaded Full Thrust, seems pretty interesting.

Gonna try it out tonight sometime.

And then you need to turn it into hex precision.

That seems a little cumbersome. "Please calculate thrust, roll, and yaw to the nearest second and then figure out which of these six hexes that fits into."

And then if you decide to increase power to engines you need to do it all over again. I forgot a step: you need to find what turn class your engines give you at x power.

    And that's just to MOVE.

Starfleet Battles twin claims to fame are awesome background, and a mind boggling level of minutiae. It's like Phoenix command for the star cruiser set.
