Thinking of going to PAX, need some advice.

So I was thinking of going to PAX earlier this summer, but I never made any plans for it. Then I started a temporary job in August, and got booked to work during PAX weekend, so I figured that was it, not going.
Then last week, I quit my job (picking up discarded beer cups for 2 hours was the last straw).

Last weekend, I went to Anime Evolution (anime con in Vancouver) and had a blast. So now I'm thinking PAX will be 10x more fun, and 10x the people.

However...I have as yet made zero plans. So I'm thinking - is it still too late? I live in Vancouver, so it's not that far. I can take the Greyhound.

I'm not sure though - should I go for the whole weekend? Or just one day? Should I take the bus? Try to join the Vancouver Supertrip? (is it too late for that?)

If the whole weekend, should I leave on Thursday morning? Or Friday morning? If I stay for the weekend, where could/would I sleep? My budget is a little limited (around $250 Canadian for the entire trip, including transit / lodging / ticket price / food), so I can't really afford a hotel. I found a good hostel in walking distance from the con centre (Green Tortoise), but I just saw it's full. :(

Couchsurfing.com? I was thinking about that, but I've never used it before and I figure it might be unfeasible to secure something via that in just a couple days, especially since I don't have a record there.

Also, I'm going solo, but I figure it shouldn't be hard to meet new people on the way there / at the con.

Honestly, I'm thinking of just going there and winging it. Maybe go door-to-door and beg random people if I can crash at their house. Is this too crazy?

I just have so many questions, I don't know what the best thing to do is. Would appreciate some advice, thanks.

We'd love to have you. If you live in Vancouver, you should be fine to just drive down Friday morning (shouldn't be too much I-5 traffic southbound). The con doesn't open until 2pm that day. You can buy a 3-day pass at the door. I think you'll want to stay for 3 days, as you'll find it to be a total blast Friday.

You could come down on Thursday if you wanted to join in on some of the pre-pax excitement (see the top post in this forum, FAQ, for more information). Those are a good way to meet people, but in no way required.

I think you'll be hard pressed to NOT meet cool people at PAX if you just open up and talk to anyone that seems to be doing something of interest.

There will be lots of stuff going on, it's impossible to see it all.

As for hotel, go up to the top of the forum, and you'll see a hotel room share thread. People that have extra space in their room will be posting availability there. I saw quite a few last time I checked, so I doubt you'll have too hard a time finding a place to stay.

So don't worry. Dig around on these forums some more and you'll find all the answers you're looking for. Hope to see you there!

Meeting People: You might want to think about dropping in our our Pre-PAX gathering in Vancouver tommorrow night. You'll meet some of the PAX crowd there.... and you might be able to find someone there with space still available in their room.

Place to Stay: As TranwreckX said the Hotel Room-Share Thread is your best bet. Seeing as you already posted on it you should still be able to find something in time.

Canadian Supertrip: We have two big groups going down on the Greyhound. One on Thursday at 8:15am and one on Friday which I beleive also leaves at at 8:15am. As long as Greyhound still has tickets available you can always join either group. The Greyhound is your best bet if you head down Friday as the lines at the border will be hellish that day (long weekend) and the bus gets to skip the line.

If you're up for leaving early on Friday morning, there's also a bus leaving Vancouver at 5:50 AM which will get you to Seattle around 10:10 AM. That's the one I'm taking.

Who needs couchsurfing.com when you've got people right here on the forum offering up their homes?

Two guys offering up space (one in renton who would drive you to and from the convention center, as he'll be going to and from himself, and one who lives within walking distance of the convention center), just one reply showing interest. So you might get lucky and find a cheap (meaning free) lodging for the weekend.
