Red Baron Coming to PlayStation Network -- out this week
Red Baron Arcade to Take-off on PlayStation Network Sept. 18
This is your captain speaking. Strap on that flight suit, as Sierra Online has cleared Red Baron Arcade for take-off on PlayStation network on Sept. 18, 2008. An intense arcade air combat game with online multiplayer capabilities, Red Baron Arcade follows burgeoning pilots as they take to the unfriendly skies and compete to rise through the ranks of the Red Baron’s squadron.
Set in the midst of World War I, Red Baron Arcade pits players against the best pilots of the century in devious dogfights, where they must swoop and dodge their way to victory. Manning the gun turrets on WWI-themed aircraft, players can battle conniving computer AI, or wage war against up to seven other aspiring “Aces†online in Deathmatch, Team-Deathmatch, and Capture the Flag modes.
Co-piloting with the release of Red Baron Arcade will be a free PlayStation Network demo of the game. And as a PlayStation Network first, recruits will get a taste of the multiplayer action to test their acrobatic flying skills against other Red Baron Arcade pilots in a special battle arena available in the Red Baron Arcade demo for up to eight players online.
I don't have a PS3 I assume there's no news of an XBLA version if it's not in this press release?
I used to play the shit out of Kesmai's Air Warrior back in the day, I'd kill for another WWI/WWII game that offered the same insane dogfight gameplay.

?
Edit: Video didn't show up at first (weird). I guess this will be less Red Baron 3D, and more.... what, Crimson Skies-ish? I'm ok with that.
Red Baron 3D is ten years old, isn't it? I mean I'd kill for an online multiplayer dogfight game that people were actually playing. :P
I almost bought an oXbox for Crimson Skies, until I actually played the game on an in-store demo unit. It felt more like MechAssault with planes than actual dogfighting.

Yea.. Red Baron 2 came out in 97, then was re-released in 98 as Red Baron 3D.
Also, your comments about Crimson Skies make me sad. The game was amazingly fun.
looks really fun. i was kind of hoping it was a gussied up new version of that snoopy game from a couple years ago, because that game looked really fun but i never got around to it. still though, going off the trailer for this its definitely gonna get bought.
Anyways if Accault were only with us today he'd mention something about how awesome Crimson Skies is and how totally lame it is that they shitcanned the developers and have no intentions of ever bringing it back, ever.
The original Red Baron made such a WWI aviation geek out of me that there's no way I could play a game where the Eindecker handles like it does in that video.
RB3D was mostly great, and it's held up real well for a decade-old flight sim. The Full Canvas Jacket mods made it look gorgeous. I just don't like the tacked-on ground attack missions. There were so few such sorties in WWI, and to so little effect, that the original RB was absolutely right to neglect them entirely.
The best thing I think is that the demo itself will have 8 player multiplayer to give folks a taste of the game. I wonder how many players the full game will support?
It's been available on the PC for a little while and is a bit of a dud, honestly. It might wind up being a better experience on the PS3, but I'd definitely hold off on Crimson Skies level expectations.

Even eight is a lot for a dogfighting game, but I remember the glory days of Air Warrior. 16 vs 16 dogfights? Talk about a game boner.
You could fly B-17 bombers too--crew one of those up with gunners, fly to 20,000 feet where only P51s could reach you, and drop your whole payload on the other team's fighter factories? Yes please.
Video definitely looks like Sixaxis control, the somewhat inconsistent, jittery movements definitely look like motion control.
I'd kind of rather have a game where the planes move like they did irl, I think.
I'm sure they wouldn't be stupid enough not to include something close to the Warhawk system of (advanced) plane control.
Time and the demo will tell. Honestly having played Crimson Skies being in a plane the whole time gets a bit boring after a while, and I prefer Warhawk as it tends to mix up types of combat.

So Red Baron Arcade is to Red Baron as Wing Commander Arena is to Wing Commander?
I wouldn't mind if it was like the original Crimson Skies for the PC. It was much more sim-oriented than the XBox port and felt much more like actual dogfighting, without the arcadey insta-180s and such of the console version. Plus it had plane customization.

Is Snoopy a bonus character?

Edit: Sierra published, silly me.
That was a freaking blast.

I actually bought that, but could never get it to run. I was very disappointed.
I had the sequel to that, it was great fun. Though I was too young to really know what to do. I bombed so many friendly industrial centers/air bases.
