What about those of us who haven't played RTS games since Warcraft II
Which is why I said that if it wasn't on the tutorial or manual, it's still a bad move on their part, since command queuing is still not given knowledge for most people outside of the RTS gaming community.
This makes me wonder... how many people out there actually play RTS games without any knowledge about command queuing? Must be hell to babysit your units all the time.
Game Almighty posted an article this morning comparing the DirectX 9 and DirectX 10 versions of Company of Heroes. There are lots of comparison screenshots and benchmarks, but I'm still not sure if it will convince people to embrace Vista.
50% performance drop?! Maye it'll be less on lower resolutions, but still.
You didn't think DX10 was a performance-hit free graphics upgrade did you?
It would be just the same if you took a DX8 game of the past and upgraded it's graphics to DX9, it's just this sort of thing was never done before the Windows Vista DX10 jump (ie, games still need to support DX9 due to the vast majority of WinXP users still about, and want to support DX10 for those who chose to upgrade).

I figured it would be something like 10-15%. I don't really care about numbers, but I figured the top of the line DX10 cards would at least be semi-impressive. It looks like they're using beta drivers and 1920x1200 so I'm not worried.
Man...color me unimpressed with the DX10 screens. Sure, there are some fairly nice lighting effects, but they are almost purely cosmetic, and rather nominal at that. I just don't see how such little difference, plus the performance hit, justifies the cost involved in upgrading to a system that can run DX10.
Then again, this is nvidia, with their horrible Vista/DX10 drivers, and this is Relic's first attempt at DX10. Plus they are grafting this onto a game designed for DX9.
Out of curiosity, anyone run this with the 360 wireless dongle? I tried with a controller connected, and it just Alt-Tabs me back to the desktop. The game still runs, and I can attempt to Alt-Tab back, but I am forced to the Desktop each time.
As a followup to their DX9/DX10 comparison, Game Almighty has an interview with one of Relic's programmers, Remy Saville, discussing the development process and upcoming expansion Opposing Fronts.
It's nice to know that Opposing Fronts won't be DX10 only, though I wouldn't expect Relic to shoot themselves in the foot like that anyway.

Take in to account that many people "in the know" have been saying this for a while. Conerting a DX9 based engine to use DX10 is not simply a matter of changing some calls and a recompile. DX10 is fundamentally different in the way it expects some things to occur, especially in the area of data flow and pipeline usage. So if you just bolt DX10 on to your DX9 engine, you may get some of the cool DX10 effects (like the smooth particles and such), but it's going to run like a turd. I am waiting to pass final judgment on DX10 until we see a game that was natively designed to use it from the ground up.
In the mean time, I would stay away from the CoH DX10 renderer for a while. I have a pair of 8800 GTS's (640mb ones) in SLi (and yes SLi works for DX10 with the latest beta drivers, 158.45 which have a CoH specific fix in them), and it runs like crap. I get about three times the frames in regular DX9 mode and the visual changes are so minor it's not worth it.
I believe so. I know Hellgate London's DX10 renderer is built from the ground up for DX10 and actually makes use of some of the stuff (like geometry shaders).
I'm trying to get my brother to get the game, but he's waiting for the new version of Parallels this month that will let him run 3D Windows programs without using Boot Camp.
I really am hopeless at this game but I would totally be up for playing against someone now or even a bit later on. Oh and I dont know how online works so yeah ...

Yep, that it was. I use it most heavily at early game, where I send my Overlord or harvester units to do early recon.

If you're asking if you can have Vista, DX10, and a DX10 card and still play the game in DX9 mode, I would imagine so.
But I'm not exactly sure.
Yes you can still run it in DX9 mode with that configuration.

I'm game now that my tough finals are over. Unfortunately I only have Hamachi available... no Teamspeak or Ventrillo or whatever.

Well it was my first online match and I underutilized mines.
Well, I didn't use them at all.
Edit: I was very happy I wasted 2 pershings and a sherman with a v1 missile attack when my ally snuck into enemy territory with a sniper.
Tonight at 8-9pm est. Let's try to get one going. I myself have an unstable and sometimes slow connection but no reason not to try this out.
I'm down.
