I didn't think it was going to be mine.
(1) I only knew the crooks to be using pagers. I didn't know the cops were on the same system.
(2) Because David Simon is a mad genius. The more you watch, and the more you learn about his philosophy with the show, the more impressed you will become. Season 5 is simply an Opus of modern fiction telling. I absolutely cannot sing the praises of the show enough, but in particular of Season 5 as a culmination of the entire series. It's stunning, really, in the end.

Also, I'm kind of sad that you think my second site looks generic. It's not at all default or generic and it actually took me a while to find it. I think it suits a minimalist writer style pretty well.

Where can you even buy a pager any more? A pre-paid cellphone is something like $20 or $30 with a month of service, more than justifiable if you're involved in any sort of criminal operation.

Here's all you need to know about college: don't ever take yourself too seriously. Read everything your profs tell you to read and more, keep an eye out for anxiety and depression, find a program that lets you get chummy with people doing what you want to do out in the real world, and otherwise take every opportunity they throw at you. That's for the productive college student.

I think most CIs are unreliable sources of information, or at least less reliable than the "justice" system judges them to be, but I also think the Wire is specific to Baltimore, as a model for the decaying modern city. In Baltimore, you don't snitch. Period.

David Simon went out to tell EVERYTHING, and it doesn't entirely come together until Season 5. Each season tackles its own area of what makes up a city. Season 1 is law enforcement, season 2 is labor, season 3 is drugs specifically, season 4 is politics, and season 5 is the media. It was conceived of, and executed this way, brilliantly. So just wait, man.
