Cel, you would know the answer to my question: why the hell do all the cops on The Wire use pagers instead of cell phones?
And why is that show so awesome?
Dude, I typed up a response and everything, but the thread got locked. Maybe this will be the next victim.
(1) I only knew the crooks to be using pagers. I didn't know the cops were on the same system.
(2) Because David Simon is a mad genius. The more you watch, and the more you learn about his philosophy with the show, the more impressed you will become. Season 5 is simply an Opus of modern fiction telling. I absolutely cannot sing the praises of the show enough, but in particular of Season 5 as a culmination of the entire series. It's stunning, really, in the end.
I had dreams about that shit, and then my dreams came (pseudo)true. The shit was profound.
I had the sense to use the back button and copy features this time.
Hippie, what are my odds of having a series of hilarious misadventures in college as I take on my intellectual rivals and learn valuable life lessons while enjoying a steady power creep until I'm outwitting Einstein's ghost?

Does anyone ever feel a little loss knowing that basically 100% of the images we see in mass media these days are digitally altered?
If I actually sit down and think about it, I kinda feel a profound loss.
This photograph of me is in no way digitally altered:
Also, I'm kind of sad that you think my second site looks generic. It's not at all default or generic and it actually took me a while to find it. I think it suits a minimalist writer style pretty well.

Yeah, the criminals totally use pagers, too, but all of the cops do as well.
I didn't notice it until after one of the dumber cops was questioning why the criminals use pagers, and I realized that they all did, too.
Also, I think they paint CIs in a bit too good of a light, and a lot of the cop behavior as well, but it's way more evenhanded than most cop shows are.

Where can you even buy a pager any more? A pre-paid cellphone is something like $20 or $30 with a month of service, more than justifiable if you're involved in any sort of criminal operation.
Exactly! You're so dull that you have to have seen the world.
I mean with Drez, he might just be an asshole. You never know.
This is because I've fucked two women at once, isn't it?
Here's all you need to know about college: don't ever take yourself too seriously. Read everything your profs tell you to read and more, keep an eye out for anxiety and depression, find a program that lets you get chummy with people doing what you want to do out in the real world, and otherwise take every opportunity they throw at you. That's for the productive college student.

You think the show is generous to cops?
I think most CIs are unreliable sources of information, or at least less reliable than the "justice" system judges them to be, but I also think the Wire is specific to Baltimore, as a model for the decaying modern city. In Baltimore, you don't snitch. Period.
What season are you on? Just wait, man, just wait.
Herc: "We need affirmative action for white kids, seriously. Do you have the drugs? Yeah, I have the drugs. Do you have the money? Yeah, I have the money. It's just not fair."
But these are throwaway scenes.
David Simon went out to tell EVERYTHING, and it doesn't entirely come together until Season 5. Each season tackles its own area of what makes up a city. Season 1 is law enforcement, season 2 is labor, season 3 is drugs specifically, season 4 is politics, and season 5 is the media. It was conceived of, and executed this way, brilliantly. So just wait, man.

I didn't think it was going to be mine.

Ok, I was just making sure I didn't miss you. How's things?
Plus I consider you learned in the ways of the world.
Who has two thumbs and doesn't give a crap?
:^: :^:
Christ, seriously? What happened to the doctor that was actually doing his job?
Greeper: Are you fucking serious? I'm one of the dullest [chat] regulars.

Sometimes WH posts and my brain goes automatically into hibernation.
Spill if you care to, sorry if I missed it earlier. Or give me a page number.
Poorly, enthusiastically.
I can if I want to.
I mean with Drez, he might just be an asshole. You never know.
t Hippie -- sorry, I'm not the Oboro of yore who rants openly into [chat] anymore.
I've got my eyes on you.
Well, my friends don't dance...

I can even dance absolutely sober.
Though it does not look like it.
