Game On: MTG

I was just about to make this thread, fortunately I refreshed the topic list before posting.
I'm up for MtG as long as it's free, I've rather enjoyed our CoH games of playing in the supergroup base using pencil and paper and emotes.

There are a couple of free programs out there (curse you MTG:Online) that let you build decks and play.
This is opposed to the instant message system where everyone suddenly seems to pull out the one card in their deck that would win them the game in a certain situation.
You cheating fucks.

Magic Online is almost exactly like "physical" Magic. You buy packs for the exact same price and have to build a collection just like in real life. I don't like that at all, but if it means getting in a draft every so often, I'm game.

See, that's what we've been doing, and it's been awesome.

Thanks Rorus, I just realized I'm on a new computer and don't yet have the program.

But not quite what I'm looking for in my price market of free

I'm a really casual player. Last cards I bought were from Weatherlight, before I decided the ratio of cost to friends who played the game didn't make much sense. So any rules that let me use my antique decks is :^: with me.

Casual normally works with a bunch of guys with their own sets. The problem with Apprentice is you have unlimited cards.
The danger here is that you can easily form, and I am not joking, decks that win on the first turn on a regular basis.
"Vintage" (aka Type 1) is what you are looking for. As long as we downplay the dickish decks that aren't fun for more casual.
put me on the list of people up for playing MTGO. My MTGO "collection" is so sparse, I've been playing exclusively with a Coldsnap themedeck for a while.

I would love to play Magic Online if no money was involved. that's the main reason I stopped playing.
I would love even more to play L5R or Pirates of the Spanish Main, although the latter would be a bit more tough.
We'd have to use an honor system about the cards we actually own, though.

I've always wanted a system where you use imaginary money to buy cards online. All of it would be Java based, and you could only select from your card pool. You get more points from tournaments, and other events.
So, just MtGO, without real money.
Apprentice is really REALLY free-for-all. You have to know the rules, casue the program sure the hell doesn't.
So, if there is an instant, you put it in, and you resolve it. Arguing with text over complex rules != fun.
I found magic workstation to be much superior to apprentice once you figured out how it works. The big appeal is that you can actually have the card art while playing.
You can download it at www.magicworkstation.com/downloads.php
I recommend using the MWS walkthrough guide on the left hand side for installation as opposed to the installation guide which is more of a comprehensive guide.
To download the pictures, you can go to www.mwsdata.com.
Instructions for installing the pictures (shamelessly taken from a post on the official MWS message boards):
Download the pics into a directory you create called "/pics" in the MWS directory (This will by default be "c:\Program Files\Magic Workstation\pics"). Each set should go into its own subdirectory (ie. ON for Onslaught and so on).
Next you need to go to Tools -> Preferences -> Image View, in your MWS. Then add a directory and choose your /pics directory.
This should give you pictures. Make sure you test things out before downloading all the pictures.
the problem I have with that software is, for me, deckbuilding is more fun than the actual game (don't get me wrong, I like the actual game, but I can spend forever building a deck), and building my magic library is an important part of the game. Building a deck for cheap, especially with the cards I own, is far more rewarding than building a potential uber-deck that would cost loads of money in real life.
Personally I'm gonna rebuild the decks I've already got, since I know the cards and I'm not about to read all five thousand or whatever cards that've been released since I stopped buying.
Assuming this thread actually leads to any gaming that I can partake in.
Magic Workstation is cool, but if we want to include OSX and/or Linux, we can use LackeyCCG or even Magic-Project, which I haven't used but claims to know the rules.
If I end up playing, I'm almost positive it'll end up being either my Saproling deck or my Enchantress deck, so I'll register another vote for Type 1. The latter is my favourite deck in the history of the world, ever. All the card drawing goodness normall associated with blue and all the 90/90 trampling goodness of green.
Trying to work with Apprentice now...would be nice if they actually had everything put together. Tutorial basically goes "Oh, here's the image files for the mana symbols, I got no idea how to use em olol have fun"
Only half the image files seem to be availible too. Guess I'll try putting together a deck with what I've got.
Wow, it really is completely ruleless...started a solitare game and it just lets you draw when you want, tap and untap when you want...and now it won't stop flickering. I think I'd rather just play over instant messaging.
Edit: my xfire nick is dasscoot, so if anyone is up for a game just send me a message.

As for using Wizard's online program, I'd be down for a weekly draft even if the idea of paying the same price for their cards upsets me.

But that's because us CoH'ers are awesome.
The program is 100% free to download. You get a free starter deck to play with and see how the program works. After that, you have to pay for cards.
EDIT: As shown above, MtGO is a shorter way of saying it.
But not quite what I'm looking for in my price market of free
That'd be apprentice then.
EDIT: I could have sworn that there was a second program to use, but I can't think of the name.
We also need to lay some rules down for Apprentice play. Type 2? Extended? Need to know what banned/restricted list we're running off of.
That would be nice.
I tried to CoH thing and encountered too much "olol my 8th pyrokenesis in a row I win"
we also talk about other random shit and clown upon each other
There's one called Magic Workstation. I liked that more than Apprentice, when I used either of them like two years ago.
I just realized: I have no idea what's been going on in MtG right now
Last I remember is... a set with asian stuff. Snakes and Samurai. Pretty neat stuff.
The danger here is that you can easily form, and I am not joking, decks that win on the first turn on a regular basis.

I might be interested in doing a game, but I've absolutely no experience with Apprentice. Does it handle things like instant(interupts) spells well?
So, just MtGO, without real money.

and it is awesome. I play the singleton version.

Because I have some of those. And some Dark and a shitload of Fallen Empires.
I had to stop buying the cards in life due to a budget..so buying cards I don't get to actully own, but pretend I do, is a big no no.
Only half the image files seem to be availible too. Guess I'll try putting together a deck with what I've got.
