need cheap apartment furniture

SamSam Registered User regular
edited August 2008 in Help / Advice Forum
checked craigslist- the problem is I don't have a car, and none of my friends have trucks.
I thought Ikea was supposed to be cheap but anything from them costs upwards of 400.

Any ideas at all? Online is probably ideal, honestly. Although I'm guessing that involves major assembly?

    You mentioned the two biggies.

I'm kinda wondering how you expect to get any furniture without a car or truck though. I mean, I guess you could always have someone deliver it, but that's going to bring price up.

If you can manage to get a truck, Goodwill/Salvation Army could be good bets.

What do you consider cheap? You're in an apartment, which means you could feasibly dumpster dive if you don't mind sitting on someone else's trash. I have two chairs and a few other random items I took from the dumpster at my old apartment. They're at my house now.

Also, try garage sales from houses near your apartments if at all possible.

++You could rent a truck as well. I saw that Home Depot rented trucks for about $19/hour. I don't know what other costs go along with that though.

If you're really strapped for cash, but have the time (and the will power), it's possible to carry the stuff that you assemble yourself at home on public transportation. I don't really recommend this, having done it myself, but if you're not able to get a truck or pay for delivery, it's an option.

If you're buying bookshelves or desks, office supply stores can be cheaper than IKEA. You might also check out Target or Wal-Mart. Just remember - you get what you pay for.

Also, it's Labor Day weekend - usually there are some great sales going on at actual furniture stores. It won't be as cheap as Goodwill or Craigslist, but you might be able to find a good deal.

Delivery is basically my only option. I was wondering if there were better prices for that than Ikea's

Really? My girlfriend and I were just able to furnish an entire apartment for well under a grand. That includes all-new bedroom furniture and a mattress, a living room (save couch), desks, office chairs, a diningroom table and chairs...

Ikea is pretty bad for delivery costs if I remember correctly. Definitely check out the delivery fees for those other stores I mentioned. You may not get as much variety, but I seem to remember their delivery fees being more reasonable.

All I need is a couch, recliner and twin bed. (My place came with a countertop that I can use with barstools as a table, and a built in desk) From Ikea, that would cost a grand. And this is just a college apartment for myself.

    Thrift Store?

And renting a cube van from Budget or wherever for a day isn't very expensive, if it comes to that.

My roommate and I are finishing up furnishing an apartment. We basically dragged everything into the NYC subway, which was an incredible pain in the ass, but I got loads of cheap and/or free stuff. Good workout too, I suppose.

If public transportation isn't going to work / you don't have people around that will help, I don't know.

Many times when people move they have stuff to give away, especially houses full of college students.

In fact if you are in Seattle I know someone who will give you a couch. There is a pretty big table too, although I think that is already spoken for.

Home Depot has some large trucks you can rent, with the first hour being 20 bucks or so.

Ikea really shouldn't be upwards of $400 on average, except maybe for huge stuff like couches, or large dining tables. I'm pretty sure every single thing my wife and I bought there was under $300, and we furnished about half our apartment on stuff from there.

Other than that? Target and Wal*mart. Dead serious. You can snag most items pretty damn cheap.

Rent a truck, as mentioned previously, and then go Craigslist. It is the most cost effective way. I know it'd be lovely to have someone knock on your door and deliver your furniture without you having to move out of the apartment but that priviledge is saved for people who don't have the word "cheap" as the second word in the title of their post.

    Really, do it.

Ikea's online inventory is total crap. If you can get the truck though, they have good returns/partial scratches and such usually near their exit which can be cost effective. Delivery fees vary, its about $35 here in BC, Canada for same-city radius (unlimited goods pretty much). That is still going to the store though, not shopping online.

If you live around a college now is a perfect time to look at postings for furniture. Physical postings as well, there are usually bulletin boards for this sort of thing at the student center. The stuff should be pretty close to you, and tons of people are moving in and out of places leaving extra stuff behind.

June/July probably more so, but like I said if you live in Seattle you can have a free couch, table and matress set, like tomorrow. Maybe Saturday.

Are airbeds any good? I've come to see bed pricing as a giant rip off. A twin mattress and frame should not cost $300. If I was decorating a more permanent place I wouldn't care, but I'm not, so I do.

An airbed is great for the weekend and nothing more. A good twin mattress will cost you $300 though.

I'm looking at an Ikea magazine right now...
    Lilberg Sofa $299
    Klippan loveseat $279
    Exarby sofa-bed $149

So you either missed them, or thought they looked awfull and wouldn't consider them. Seeing how you really have to look within a 5-mile radius from where you live... you're heavily boned.
As for no friends with trucks (or I assume SUVs), we had someone buy our futon and take it away on a Ford Focus.

I've slept on an airmattress for almost a year now. It's fine for me. But I also went online and bought the snazziest one I could find, with a warranty. So it cost me almost as much as a real bed would have anyway.

An airbed will screw up your back. Get a bedframe off craigslist and a mattress + box spring from a local mattress store. Don't forget to haggle the price down!

Since you don't have a license or a truck, sometimes you can find guys who aren't professional movers, but have a truck and hire themselves out on weekends. "Guy with truck will haul stuff for $XX" I would look at school postings and newspapers for some college student in this situation.

I have a truck and I am designated hauler for all family and friends, and a few of them actually pay me.

Ask around and you can probably find someone. If you don't know them that well offer them some cash.

I bought a bed from ikea, get one of the little double slat beds, and one of the rolled up mattresses that fits. I think TOTAL, it was like 100 bucks. I bought the 19.99 mattress and honestly its one of the best mattresses ive ever had. Its hard, but i like it that way, and its probably the only bed ive had aside from a waterbed where i dont wake up sore.

Oh and they also have couches starting at like 150, and chairs even cheaper than that. I mean yeah, if you want the plush fancy shit, its going to be expensive, but if you go with the absolute cheapest stuff they have you can get everything you want for like 300 bucks. Ikea delivery also isnt that expensive and theyll lug it straight into your place too, not just drop it at the door.

If thats too expensive, dumpster dive like other people suggested, or find friends who are getting new shit and offer to take their old stuff. Thats how i got my couch, my boss's wife made him buy all new furniture and he was just throwing it away. Its practically brand new, or atleast, it was before i dropped cigarettes and spilled beer all over it.

The next time you see a craigslist posting that looks good, offer to pay them 30 bucks or so to bring it to your place. People have done that to me before, and I was happy to oblige.

I don't mean to be overly critical, but do you really need a recliner when you're just starting out on your own? It's one of the most expensive pieces of furniture you can buy (even a very spartan one will start at $600+ if it's well made). I'd have to humbly suggest that it may not be that Ikea is expensive, I think you may have expensive tastes. I'm seeing a nice enough couch, armchair, and bed (frame, slats, and mattress) for a little over $500 total in the Ikea catalog.

Might be nice, but it certainly isn't cheap, unless you plan on reassembling every day.

Depending on the size of your city, check postings on cork boards around the mailbox sections of apartment complexes and at local colleges. buy only one item at a time and walk it home.
