So I've never really had cause to wear the stuff before, but I'm going on vacation to the beach and taking this girl out for a nice romantic evening, and I'd like to not smell like low tide.

Readily available and reasonably priced are plusses. I'm typically an old spice guy if that helps.

I wear Fierce by Abercrombie & Fitch, though I don't own any clothes from there. Usually gets a pleasant response from the ladies, a few may recognize it. My roommate wore Acqua Di Gio by Armani and I remembered that smelling pretty good, I might consider that once I run out of my bottle of stuff.

I know for Fierce (God, I feel like I sound like Miss J of ANTM every time I say it), they offer a smaller bottle and a larger bottle. The smaller bottle lasted me a long time, something like a year or so with wearing it daily, so don't feel like you'll be on short supply getting the small one. And don't overdo it, either. One spray on the neck, maybe another one on one wrist that you then rub onto the other wrist, and that should last you for several hours.

Issey Miyake Pour Homme Summer. It's not too overbearing, but still distinctive.

I really like Givenchy's PI. It is a good smell, the ladies love it.

Its about 40-50 bucks at JCP.

    Polo Black smells like nighttime.
D&G smells like a happy and active afternoon.

Both are good in different situations.

I'm not sure how many girls my age would agree but I love Old Spice aftershave on a guy.

so you're an old spice guy, and there is at least one positive review of old spice in this thread.

    Idea: wear some Old Spice.

side note: I wear their deodorant and I'm not a huge fan of it =p but it doesn't smell like "real" old spice so I guess it doesn't count.

My favourite "summery" cologne (I have about 4 colognes in my scent arsenal at the moment) is Lacoste "Style in Play" cologne.

It's subtle/not overbearing, not very musky, very fun and I've been complimented on it many a time by the opposite gender when they do get close enough to smell it.

Bvlgari Black is my favorite (on myself) and a few ladies have complimented me about it so I guess its a good choice. Maybe some other forumer may have an opinion?

The thing about cologne is that it reacts differently (and thus smells different) on every person, so you're probably better off going to a department store and sniffing until you find something you like. When you find one or two, spray on your bare wrists and walk around for a while to allow the alcohol to evaporate and your skin to warm the oils in the scent.

Things to remember: less is more; cologne does not replace showering; pure parfums are much stronger than eau de toilettes; and while Old Spice is great, it reminds us of our fathers.

As an Old Spice loyalist, my recommendation is something that smells slightly exotic, but not beachy. Something with vanilla scent to it, like Pi or Raw Vanilla (I don't care how cheap it is it smells nice; teaky). Or hell do what DiscoZombie said and wear actual old spice (in limited quantities). What's your own preference on this sort of stuff?

Edit: I guess that's another recommendation for Pi.

If you are going for somthing kinda musky, you could go for Drakkar Noir

    It is relatively inexpensive too.

Limed for truth their cologne is excellent as well.

Davidoff also makes another new scent called adventure which is great.

A third choice would be HUGO BOSS energizer.
