I bought an 80gb Zune at the end of December, everything was working wonderfully with it until I went to connect it to my desktop PC (Windows XP SP3) and it isn't wanting to detect my Zune. It charges, howver it acts like the Zune itself is being connected and disconnected. Every USB port I try does this, I've updated both the Zune software and the firmware on the device itself and nothing seems to help. Under my Device Manager the profile for the Zune is giving me an error 10 (This device cannot start). The Zune is connected directly to the PC, not through a USB hub. I've tried all 6 USB ports. Any ideas/fixes that I may not have thought of yet?
just a thought (as i dont have my zune handy right now) but doesnt Windows have a couple of serivces attached to the Zune (the same way the iPod has the "Apple Mobile Device" service?
looking through my services.msc i see three services set to automatic and "started". they are:
Zune Bus Enumerator
Zune Network Sharing Device
Zune Wireless Configuration Service
check if yours are set to "disabled" or "stopped" and go from there. though i may my totally off base, it is worth a shot.
Start > Run > "services.msc"
check near the bottom (alphabetical order)
right click the service, under "Startup type" choose "Automatic" and the click the "Start" button if it isn't already

do you have XP 64bit? because for some strange reason XP64 is like, the only OS not supported for zune use.
Alternatively, instead of throwing it out the window, could you throw it into an insured shipping box and send it to me? That would be pretty swank.
Have you tried a different USB cable? My smartphone was doing a similar thing, in that it would charge when connected but ActiveSync could not communicate with the device. Using a different cable fixed the problem.
I can suggest the standard advice of making sure you have the latest Zune software.
Also, make sure to connect your zune *while* the zune software is running. If I connect it first and then start the software, it won't be recognized by the program... I'm sure you've thought of that already though.
Yes, it's XP. I have the latest version of the Zune software. I don't have access to another cable to try. I tried making sure those 3 services were running, still no go. I don't have XP 64 bit, just standard Windows XP SP3. I've tried everything I can think of short of trying to call Microsoft and that's only because I haven't had the time yet.

try reinstalling the software?
Alternatively you could google for the zune mass storage device hack and bypass the zune software completely. Essentially becomes like most other mp3 players where you just plug it in and drag/drop files into it.
as a bonus, it requires no "hacks" at all on the device, a simple registry bit-switch.
I reset the zune firmware, formatted it, everything. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling my USB controllers, still the same issue. I'm beginning to think nothing short of a reinstall of Windows will fix this error and that's what I'm trying to avoid...

Again, try it on another PC before you do anything dire -- ideally, try it on a system belonging to someone else entirely (if there's a software conflict, you may have that software on all of your systems). If it throws the same error on another PC, odds are it's the device.
Edit: Also, you should be under warranty, so unless you really want to just get an iPod, Microsoft can probably be persuaded to fix/replace it if it's a device issue.
Ended up fixing the issue: Swapped my zune with a friend for his 30gb 5th gen ipod. Zune works on his machine, ipod works on mine. This can be closed now.

Tried registry hack to make zune a mass storage device--nothing.
Any reason to NOT sell this pos on craigslist and buy an iPod?
(If you do decide to sell it, swat me a PM, I've been meaning to buy one for parts. >_>)

My solution: Sold the zune and never looked back.
Same here except I broke it into pieces with a hammer. First gen Zune.
