I got a text today from the fucking idiot manager who works at the CC I applied to and interviewed at a week ago, saying im scheduled to come into work at 11-5. I don't even really want to work there at all, I think I want to go to Starbucks or maybe some kind of restaurant (maybe bartender in the near future).
So internet, I ask you, should I go in to work at CC or not.
None taken
They've been hiring like crazy lately, though, and going through people in like a month
And none of the people they hire know anything about comics
Goddammit that should be a requirement to work in a shop
I'm actually scheduled for covering for a dude in a comic shop. The guy said i basically shot to the top postion on the list when i asked because i looked presentable and also wasn't a freak.
don't be rude to girls like they don't belong there out of your discomfort for being around the opposite sex when they come in
because that is not way to keep me as a customer, comic book shop employees!
(this actually happened. only once though, and i never went back, my regular comic book store is very good to me)
i worked at the video game department of futureshop (best buy) and i loved it
also i worked at eb and i loved that too
so yeah, go for it.
you're a bartender right? i think i want to try that out next year maybe. i know you have to take a class and stuff, but do you like it?
My friend is taking a bartending class and it's a sweet deal.
2 week class, test at the end, you get your license and then they hook you up with a job.
My friend's mom did the class and she now brings in like $300 a night.

I was a bartender
now I'm a graphic artist for a video game development company
bartending is a trying job. It's tiring, people are dicks on a regular day, but get em drunk and lonely, and ohhh shit, son. But the cash flow is second to none as far as jobs that don't need an education go. I walked out of there one night with 500$ cold hard, untaxed cash.
you shouldn't need any real heavy courses other than smart serve or whatever the US equivalent is. Most bars will look for either just having a really outgoing, yet level headed, kind of a "leader not a follower" personality. Some will want smart serve. Most don't care if you have a bartending course.
Pick up a book on mixed drinks, learn how to make:
a ceasar
a white russian
a black russian (same as white, no milk)
tom collins
long island iced tea
whiskey sour
a cosmo

Awesome.
And yeah i'm pretty jealous of your new job. Working with video games is pretty much my dream but I can't draw or do math, so i'm stuck with film.
I only use my comic book shop to order specific comics
I don't like being in there and I always feel like I have to bring my girl or someone so I'm not all
you know
I've gone in by myself forever
When I bring people in is when it feels weird
Like when that girl went in with me while I grabbed a couple Preacher trades
It didn't help that she met the resident Comic Book Guy
i worked at the video game department of futureshop (best buy) and i loved it
also i worked at eb and i loved that too

if you can write, you can be a game designer
that's like the highest paid job in the industry
and people always seem to forget it exists
in my company, a lot of designers and producers (also don't need math or art, also high paid) start off as testers
so get to testing for a local company and you're in!

god not at all
a bunch of ours have journalism degrees
but video game companies are relatively open to people who are just talented but do not have degrees to back them
I am a prime example of that.
It's because there aren't really a lot of great programs out there that put a focus on what people do in the gaming industry as it's still relatively new and growing.
So if a person shows promise and the right attitude, they're in!
my connection at valve told me they hire people for people, then once they're in, the person can do whatever they want. so like, say they get hired as a 3d artist, but they are showing a lot of skill in programming, valve's stance is "have at it"
such a cool company
i am so going to work there someday.
p.s. unrelated, i was told if i go to the austin gdc this year, i'll be put on the invite list for their party
but i can't go
So basically I just call up local places or put in app's for testing, and while testing talk to the guys in charge about writing or some such? Sounds easy enough.
Definently have to try that this year or next year.

I've always felt that if I ended up in the videogame industry it would be like adding the words "THIS MAN WAS A DWEEB" to my epitaph
So basically I just call up local places or put in app's for testing, and while testing talk to the guys in charge about writing or some such? Sounds easy enough.

Dude just get hired by a Japanese game company.
Tell them you have a great idea for a RPG.
The main character is a young boy who has amnesia but only he and his spiky hair friends can save the world.

yeah that's it!
just show a lot of promise, talk to the right people
brown nose it up
they'll keep you on as a tester for a couple projects, then during that time, they'll tell you "we're hiring for an assistant producer for X game, or game designer for the studio in X city" jump all over it.

You have to claim your tips as income or else you are committing tax evasion. Many servers/bartenders seem to have this idea that they don't need to claim that shit.
Otherwise, working in a bar/restaurant is an annoying and tiring job. I'm a team leader at a place in the airport, between the politics of the company I work for and the absolutely retarded shit of my own staff, the waiters and bartenders I find myself wanting to walk out some days. One of the major flaws with the service industry is that you tend to get self centered assholes who didn't bother to get an education because they could pull in $30-$50/hour in tips and have now advanced to management positions. In their older age they hate their shitty lives and tend to take it out on everyone else around them.
Kind of went ranty there, but it's fair warning as to what the industry is like.
Another thing to think about before becoming a bartender is that you will probably not get the money making nights.
Those are often given to the people who have been working there longer.
When I first started delivering, I only got morning shifts and I made no money.
Finally now I can get some closing shifts.

I've been trying to get my old job back at Circuit City for a while now. That goddamn application test is weird. I tried answering it with respect to the most obvious answers, but for whatever reason I got labeled as a bad employee and the application isn't available to the manager. This is a guy that knows me, even, so it's ridiculous. But they apparently can't hire without the application so we're trying to retrieve it from the help desk. Kinda frustrating.
i answer those dumb things honestly every time
like the question of choice on the best buy quiz:
your dad got hired to work at best buy. he's been here for a month. After a month, he tells you in confidence that he's been stealing merchandise from the company. Do you turn him in?
my answer: fuck no, it's my dad, family comes way before a part time job at a best buy
and they hired me.
because it's a trick question
no one would turn in their dad
unless their dad was a prick to them and beat them up when they were a kid or something.

Every circuit city employee I've ever met has been indolent and rude and nobody seemed to care so I'd say go for it
And at my comic shop
ill go in today and see how it is. if i absolutely hate it I just won't go in again and keep looking for something else.
I would love a job at my shop
I would never leave for college though
Just stay working in a comic shop all my life
yeah but I bet you won't get it
no offense to you personally
That is why you will never get a job there (i applied to all the bookstores in town with absolutely no results)

Yeah, it sucks ass. $8.50 for me.
Starbucks is $8.20 but then there's tips.
