You do that "wear" on the barrels with a drybrush right?
About how dry is the paint when you do it?
Drybrushing does not involve drying the paint. Rather, you wipe most of it off on something separate so you have very little, causing small streaks instead of a flat paintjob. It's that and his subtle highlighting that make the guns really shine.

No i meant how dry was the lower layer when he brushed the wear on.

I went back and repainted one of my first paintjobs today, it just wasn't sitting right with me after I had gotten some better stuff under my belt. I cleaned it up a bit and tried to hit the details a bit more, but still stick with a really basic brushed metal. Anyways, its up for sale it anyone is interested, and if not, no hard feelings, I would hate to think I'm just whoring my stuff out here.
hey guys, i was thinking about modding nerf guns but i have never modded before. I was wondering where i should start. any suggestions?
thx in advance
Find a good writeup on a gun. Buy said gun. Follow instructions. Repeat with more guns until you understand the concepts involved. Begin modding guns without writeups and writing it up.
Thanks to you and this thread, I picked up a Maverick earlier in the week and brought it to work. I am now responsible for the sale of 6 additional Mavericks to coworkers, and my own Longshot. This has been an exceedingly shitty week at work, but shooting at each other has made it a little more bearable.
So, I've identified the longshot mods I want to play with, but they all seem to require a little lexan (for shotgun-style longshot cocking). The only suggestions for sourcing it involve finding some sort of store that works on it, and begging them for spares. Do any of you have suggestions for some type of local stores I would check for supplies? Would Home Depot/Lowes/etc. carry it, or a reasonable substitute?
Krylon Primer, anything but fusion, its pretty much ass. Fusion paint is great on plastics if you ONLY plan on using that tone/color. Any other paints react negatively to the chemicals in the fusion paint and bubble up when applied. I use grey primer since my base coat is black, that way I know what I've covered with base and whats still primer, instead of playing it by ear. Just know that an ultraflat black goes a long way towards holding your paints to your gun, primer only goes so far by itself.
Okay... second question, since it seems I should be able to find some lexan or acrylic near the windows and doors at Home Depot.
There is obviously great skill involved in getting those weathered looks, but can you describe the basic process? The various threads I'm reading make it sound like: spray on light primer -> spray on solid color -> apply small amounts of secondary (weathered) color with drybrush. Is that right? What type paint should be used for the drybrush?
Go to your local Games Workshop, fight off the mouthbreathers, head to the counter, and pick the colours you like. Mithril silver is the brightest and shiniest of the metal colours, which is good if you're painting something this size. You want it to be obvious and bright.

Hehe... funny. I'm in Albuquerque, NM... I think my nearest GW shop is in Pheonix. I guess I can just hit up a hobby shop for the shiniest-appearing metal model paint I can see.

It's not really whoring yourself out if it applies to the thread and oh god I want one.
In other news, I now own a Nite Finder with a REAL FUCKING LASER
...instead of that LED thing. It's surprisingly accurate. I probably should have taken pictures while I was doing it, but (1) I was too excited and just wanted to get it done, and (2) I only have a cell phone camera. I might find a way to get a video to you of it in action, at the very least.

I uh... scroll back a few pages, I think I've talked about painting technique 3 or 4 times in this thread so far. I'm sure you can google "drybrushing" and get at least something in the way of pictures and words to guide you along.
Go with acrylic paints, and don't even try enamel paints, they don't follow the same rules. As for the weathered looks, I do 2 shades for metals, and 3-4 plus highlighting for all my solid colors. Thats not getting into dirtying up my paintjobs with inks and washes, which you don't need to worry about right now.

Is the Russian Roulette mod worth it? On one hand it doubles the badassness of the gun. On the other hand it apparently makes the thing slightly more prone to breaking (risky when I'll need to pay $25 US for another one and wait two weeks) and probably won't make loading that much easier for me, as I tend to just stick the darts into the open chambers while the clip is still in the firing position.
So is the coolness boost enough to offset the supposed weakness?

I'd say yes, but it's not my gun. At the very least I'd say do the basic mod to remove the little parts sticking out in the casing that keep the thing from swinging out all the way.

My gun has not broken yet, and I've slapped it so many times playing Russian Roulette with friends. Go for it.

I'll probably give it a shot then, does anyone have a handy link to a good guide?

Yeah, I had checked out a few pages on drybrushing and the stuff earlier in the thread. I was really fishing for info on the proper paint to use, but decided to re-ask more questions because, uh, I'm like that.
Thanks for spreading the knowledge. This, so far, has been a great thread.

Man, i would have to get this as a christmas gift for my brother, were it not for all my money being reserved for the Wii.
Exquisite work, as always Aardvark.
Quick question: Was it one of you guys, who, during one of the panels at PAX, talked to Jerry about your modded Maverick? Just curious.

Do they have merchants at PAX? Aardvark you should so paint up a bunch of shit and set up a stand there, especially seeing as people were mentioning a PAX Nerf war earlier.

They did have the Bawls booth, but i don't remember anyone else selling stuff, aside from the bands. Also, yes, that would be awesome. Have a giant Nerf war in the Seattle convention centre, with Aardvark selling stefans and modded guns. Have two armies, fighting for territory, then some CTF, then some Nerf assassins.
But seriously, we have to set up a PAX Nerf war. Will they allow nerf weapons into the convention centre? I thought i heard someone say they didn't at the Meydenbauer.

It has occured to me that there's quite a bit of room inside a longshot for internal modifications. Above the end of the barrel you can fit an entire laser pointer internally. Drill a hole outta the middle, right above the barrel, mount a laser pointer inside. Take the yellow ridge, modify it to turn the pointer on and off. Doesn't look like it'd be too hard to do, and a drill drills through that plastic really easily (I stripped a screw when removing my air restrictor...D:)
I believe I want to try and do this. I also need to add a new spring. Any suggestions for a longshot spring? Like, a direct link to what I need to buy?

Well Gabe and Tycho have proven themselves Nerf Warriors in the past so they'd probably appreciate the idea, but it'd be insurance hell.
Waiver forms ho!
I suppose it also makes carrying a real weapon somewhat easier, they'd have to do it outdoors somewhere.

Outside? But there's bears out there, right? Plus, Seattle summers are far too hot to actually go outside, i almost died trying to find an ATM after i ran out of money buying shirts last year.
...
What about a parking garage?

Oh.
Probably very, very dry.
If I didn't just pay all my bills I would completely buy this.
$20 is cheap as hell for that type of quality.
