I have one friend with a Longshot and another with a Maverick. I love the latter so much. His house has those sort of flat-panel light switches, so we'll just sit around from various spots of the room and try to turn the lights and fan on/off with darts.

... Well, I now have an excuse to take apart my longshot.

I am not sure why, but the barrel that acts as the loaded/primed indicator has gotten out of whack. You can see the grease they use to lube it, and it isn't going black after you fire it.

Yeah, that was the intimidating thing about that mod forum... They used terms for springs and other components that were based on their collective knowledge as a community, and it's a bit overwhelming. Plus, I don't want to cannabalize another gun to strengthen mine.

The Big Bad Bow's spring. Not sure of the information on that spring that one would use to buy the same kind, though.

actually, the guy used the same type of spring in his Night Fire (hence why he termed it an NF spring)...

Is Industrial Strength officially regulated? Could we simply swap the spring in the Longshot out with one of the same length that's called 'industrial strength' and all get the same results of much dart range?

I just got a longshot tonight. I want to mod this thing, but I'm really afraid to as the directions on that NerfHQ site are really a little hazy. Can anyone who has done this before point me in the right direction - i.e. where would I get a spring, where do I put these O-rings he's talking about, and what is this restrictor thing?

I'm so fucking sick right now.

    Why?

I walked into Wal-mart, and saw a longshot, with a "bonus"...

    40_1_b.JPG

It's the "laser" sight off the Nite Finder, only it's a universal mount, designed to go on the scope slot.

Which means, of course, that it's mountable to the Maverick and Firefly.

    PISSES ME THE HELL OFF.

Makes me more angry that Hasbro isn't selling Longshot darts yet, and I don't want to buy the Longshot again just to get this laser sight. =(

Nerf could do well selling accessories on their website like this. But noooo. =(

Edit: By the by, my bro took out the limiters in his maverick, and the gun suddenly started shooting like it needed viagra. Were we doing something wrong? It just seems like those prongs are what push the dart forward, not the air.

Yeah. It's the same kind of focused super-bright LED that the Switchfire and the Nite Finder EX-3 use, which gets diffused pretty bad by the aiming thing.

That said, it's just a cool little accessory. No one's selling it by itself on ebay (I figure it just hit stores today), and I'm not gonna be too upset, but it'd be nice.

So yeah.. looking over the nerf modding forums, it seems the limiter isn't just the 3-pronged assembely, but the endcap that completes the seal. My guess, looking at what my bro did, is that he didn't get it sealed up nice and tight when he removed the prongs. They also say that removing that piece with the prongs (which seals the airflow after a certain amount) doesn't do much for the range.

I think I might have to buy another Maverick, expressly for modification.

I live in Australia and Nerf isn't big over here, but are Longshots worth importing? It says 35ft on the box but that doesn't seem like much when with a few interior mods you can get a Maverick shooting about the same, possibly a little further.

I've modded my longshot and the thing sounds like a gun now. I went to the hardware store after trying to judge the length of the spring without having it apart. Big mistake. I got a spring thats about 1 1/2 inches too short but massively stiff (Only $1.50). Still, that didn't stop me from putting it in :) The loudness comes from the shaking and rattling the shorter spring does after firing.

After removing the restrictor, I also cut back about 1cm on the plastic that the bolt goes through, as the extra stiffness makes it harder to stay cocked. Cutting it back makes it a bit stronger. The plastic I'm talking about is the narrow slit that the bolt passes through.

Currently, I can shoot 80+ feet consistantly with straight darts in my apartment hallway. Dented darts slice worse then I do when I'm golfing, however.

I imagine having a longer spring would give me the extra distance. I used a 4 in spring, I believe it takes a 6 inch. Your best bet would be to take it apart and either bring it to the hardware store or take measurements.

Also, you dont need a dremel to remove the restrictor. I did mine with an xacto knife and some patience.

Damage wise, this gun hurts. When shot from within 10 ft, it left a welt for a day. The best thing about it is now the sight is actually useful, as long as you have straight darts.

Next mod is making it a pump action shotgun

Alrighty. First, get a magnet or a bowl if you have one. It's much easier to keep track of the screws by sticking them to a magnet or keeping them in a bowl.

Second, take out the 24 or so screws that hold the beast together. You will have to take apart the sliding stock as well, it's easy to put back together.

Also, if you've already attached the bolt, you will have to pry the end off with a screwdriver. It was a pain in the ass for me.

Now, go here and scroll about 3/4 the way down and you will find pictures of the internals of the gun. Use these for reference on how to put it together again. http://nerfhaven.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=7002&st=150

Once apart, you will notice a thick, orange tube above where the bolt is. Manipulate it until it comes out. The plunger arm should slide out I believe, but there may be two screws holding the backing plate on, I can't remember, honestly.

Once you have the plunger arm out, look through the hollow tube it was in. At the end, you should be able to see a wall with gaps around it. It will be attached by three prongs to the plunger tube. This is the restrictor wall. You will have to, either using a dremel or an x-acto knife, cut into the center of the wall and gradually make the hole wider. You will begin to see the inside walls, and the space that houses the restrictor spring and the restrictor itself. Cut a circular hole in the restrictor wall until it is flush with the inside tube and the spring comes out. Next, take a pliers and grab ahold of the "X" looking thing that is in there, and pull it out. That is the restrictor. Once that is removed, look for a hole on the top of the plunger tube, and seal that up for better air flow also.

Here are some pictures that may help.
    http://nerfhaven.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=7002&st

Honestly, if you can get to a hardware store to add a spring, it is the easiest mod on this thing. It is pretty straightforward. I'm not sure how much farther it will shoot without the restrictor but without a new spring, as I modded both right away.

Ooops, sorry man. I have the mav as well. Honestly, the mav restrictors are a pain. You have to make sure that you reassmeble everything flush, otherwise you lose distance. I haven't modded mine beyond a paint job, simply because I use the LS as my primary. All I use the Mav for is inbetween clips of the LS.

Nerf Haven does have a few tutorials on Mav restrictor mods, along with a useful mod that allows it to open farther for easier reloading.

So where is everyones favorite place that they have nerf wars? I find my apartment building on the weekends works great for scenarios. Get a few peopel in on it, have each persons apartment be a viable place where a person is being held ransom or something. Start outside and work your way in, its great fun.
