Have to chime in here as well. The Enforcers were AMAZING! I truly admire your patience and dedication to helping out the attendees. As well, the Enforcers who were stuck in the same session room, all day long, (FallenEverdark WAHOO!) were fantastic! SPECIAL thanks to the Enforcer who gave me the CHIP button. You rock and Chip's Challenge rules!
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! You all were amazing!
I regged just to say thanks to the Enforcers. You guys made booth setup and tear down as well as the whole event just run a lot smoother for us. As an exhibitor it's a real bonus to have people check up on your booth and genuinely try to make things run better for you.
99% of the enforcers were cool. However, during the concert, I was about 3-4 rows from the front when this big guy tries to push between me and my friend. We push our shoulders together, and he taps my shoulder and flashes me his enforcer badge. I step aside and he drags his friend and his girlfriend behind him, and take up camp right in front of the 2 of us making the people there shift to the left and right. Not even in uniform, just watching the concert. This guy was like 7 inches or more taller than me, too.
But, I'm not going to let one bad experience sour me on the helpfulness of the entire team. Good job guys.
Here is the person who has the most to thank ALL Enforcers for. Most who read this will not know the backside of all that goes into putting It on and more importantly, maintaining safety and service to It. Were it not for the Enforcers, I wouldn't touch It.
Those few of you who were closest to the fire and in the trenches WITH me, you know who you are.
Those of you who jumped when I asked for help, you know who you are.
What I owe you cannot be measured. What the PAX community owes you, they collectively could not afford.
Thou Rocketh.
The Bruce.
For those who don't know, I believe Bruce is in charge of the greencoats (the ones who check your badges at doors) and he's a really friendly guy, and very easy to work with.
I was really impressed by the folks running the Raven theater on the 2nd floor. I didn't catch her name, but there was one lady I swear was in there all weekend. I suspect she slept on the floor.
That would be FallenEverdark, the Raven theater manager, and I don't think she sleeps... ever. From what I heard, she ran a pretty tight ship.
An enforcer twiddled my nipples. It aroused in me a deep passion.
I don't care that he was a large burly Australian man. *swoon*
Ah, Macca, our australian, and his legendary bad touch... PAX wouldn't be complete without you.
As an Enforcer, post like this bring a tear to my eye. It's our driving passion to make sure we rock your faces off 24/7, I personally don't know how to do less for you guys.
So it's my turn to flip this around for a second. Thank each and every one of you who were at PAX. I was at the Rock Band 2 exhibit all weekend, and I want to especially thank all of you who were understanding about the line and the need to keep the aisles clear. Your patience was appreciated. I'm sorry to all those I had to turn away at the end of the day, I really wish everyone that wanted to play could've.
I hope to see you all again in 09!
-Groove, Enforcer.
Am I the only one who thought that the enforcers were mostly a necessary evil? Maybe I just missed all the cool ones, but in my experience not a single one was friendly or seemed like someone I would associate with outside of a mandatory fashion.
Was there really no one but what seemed a small clique of forum mod types chosen more for their impressive array of antisocial regalia than their actual helpfulness. I'm not saying that they were all giant cockbags, but when it wasn't just out and out lies in order to get rid of me the response I got was curt bordering on rude.
I realize you can't be chatty Cathy, you've got shit to take care of. Props for helping run a smooth convention, anti-props for breaking the "don't be a dick" rule and reminding me of guys who used to steal my shit in high school.
Maybe it's just a difference of opinion on how curt, unctuous, or rude you expect someone who is supposedly "one of the nerds" to be. Or maybe it's that people who have posted before seem to be part of the regular crowd, and so didn't have to deal with the bullshit some random guy in the crowd felt was directed at him. I'm not sure. Like I said, maybe I just missed all the cool enforcers.
And in response to your facetious question: Maybe I went to the same convention as you. I bought a lot of swag, watched a couple panels, met some cool people (though Kurtz's coolness is questionable), played some fun video games with said cool people, and embarrassed my friend in front of a large studio audience. That was PAX 08, right?
Now my return volley: Do you generally respond to legitimate opinions in derogatory tones, or is it just you sucking the dick of the crowd so as to appear "hip"?
You might note I'm not being dismissive in a passive-aggressive, ad populum tone, but rather am actively challenging your opinion in an overly hostile tone in order to try to ascertain why you seem to think that just because your experiences were positive, all experiences were equally as positive. I admit this may be a clue why I didn't agree with the general assessment of the enforcers "rock'n" status.
Okay, the smiley face obviously wasn't well interpreted... I was just joking with you, I didn't mean to sound berating in the least bit. I apologize completely if it seemed that way, I wasn't aiming to offend whatsoever.
In honesty, I was surprised when I came back here and saw your response. I didn't think anything I said was worthy of the comments you threw back at me... but if you interpreted my comment to be as vindictive as it sounds like you did, I suppose I can see where your response came from. But I definitely wasn't intending it to be that way... and I hope you'll accept my apology if I've offended you. There was no intent to offend in my prior message. I thought that it was humorous to ask: it didn't have any greater (or more devious, or malicious, or whatever label might be assessed) underlying goal than to inject some comedy into the situation. If it was interpreted that way, I apologize... my bad for being careless with my words. It wasn't an intent to throw a "volley" at you at all, so there was no real need to return one.
I do, however, think that the enforcers I ran into were nice people, and others do seem to agree with that opinion. That's all I'm saying. I wasn't looking to make you all upset or angry, or to defame your opinion... at least not intentionally.
Wow, Loser4Now, you picked the nicest guy on the PAX forums to lash out at? If his very mild joke offended you so badly, I'm not terribly surprised that your experiences with the enforcers were different from those many of us had.

It's okay, let's just let it drop, don't worry about it. The internet has a way of making things sound serious when they're not meant to be, and vice versa... and when I made my joke above, I wasn't thinking about that when I wrote it. His response was a bit over the top for my tastes, but I can see where the comment would have made him upset given no additional information and not knowing that I wasn't trying to harm him.
It's just one of those misunderstandings, like when someone quips "your mom" jokingly, not realizing that the person on the other side's mom just died, or that they never met their mom, or whatever. Something like that.
Hey, I wasn't aiming to piss you off. I was just joking around... I was hoping that the smiley face would hint at that, but I can see that it didn't. Anyways, sorry if I offended you, it wasn't my intention to do so.
I'm not angry at you. But the whole "let's pat the enforcers and by extension ourselves on the back" is a sore point for me and a couple of my friends.
We went with high spirits, but several times it seemed as though the enforcers were being your typical "in crowd" at a convention that I thought was supposed to be "by gamers for gamers." Preferential treatment, misleading opinions stated as fact, superior attitudes, derogatory or condescending remarks, a notable lack of camaraderie or even civility with the general public. I'm not saying every enforcer I met was the epitome of evil. For the most part they seemed to do their jobs. But like I've said before, of all the people I met at PAX, I can almost universally say I wouldn't want to hang out with the Enforcers. They remind too much of the Sith. And sadly, I don't think it was ironically intentional.
My apologies if my response was disproportionate to the perceived harm. I hate having an opinion tossed aside simply because it doesn't agree with the common view, especially when it's my own. The "Were you even at the same convention as us" seemed to me to simply be a way to dismiss the minority opinion, rather than respond to it in a meaningful manner. But the internet is a very sad medium for carrying tone, that's why I made sure to state plainly what mine was, and what I perceived his to be. I wasn't that upset, and I hope my assumed tone didn't upset either.
If it helps, I definitely didn't mean to toss your opinion aside, and I'm very sorry if the carelessness of my comment made it seem that I was trying to do so. I do think that the majority of the attendees share a very different opinion from you, but my "were you at the same convention" comment was truly just meant to be a joke... though I can see how that would come off as dismissive, the intent to *be* dismissive wasn't there.
I was upset at first by your response, mainly because I was shocked that you were so offended by what I thought was just a relatively normal comment. But when I re-read my joking question, I could see how I might've taken it offensively in your shoes, so I axed the comment.
I didn't run into any enforcers who I felt had the kind of traits you're talking about, but I'll admit there's a lot of enforcers out there. If that's the case, though, I hope you run into the more friendly enforcers next time. There were a large amount of very friendly and helpful ones, doing the best that they could to help out while at the same time doing whatever they may have been assigned to do (be it crowd control, directing people to other locations, checking for badges etc...). I know that on several occasions (if I may give anecdotal evidence) they helped me find an event or a line where people were interested in helping with certain donation causes, and one Enforcer in particular helped me personally in one specific instance.
What exactly gave you all your impressions about enforcers?
Did you even stop to talk with any of us? ask us questions about random things?
I know I interacted with countless people throughout all of PAX. The only thing I yelled at people was to not stop for pictures and keep moving when they had to route the line through PC room.
I was beyond busy all the time (my legs are dead and will be for a few days) runing around solving many things that came up. But yet still found the time and energy to remain positive whenever I sat down and someone wanted to "talk shop" with me.
Every enforcer is a gamer. Dont know what gave you the opinion otherwise.
"Preferential treatment"? We have an all access badge becuase its required to do work. Those of us who dont work the entire time (aka, non managers, the rest work the whole time by choice) get access to things in exchange for their time. (although if someone cut in front of you in expo to play a game, thats not cool, espically if they had their enforcer shirt on)
Misleading opinions? care to give an example?
Considering that we do all our volunteer work (no enforcer is paid staff, FYI) is to service you guys, I dont see how there is a superior attitude, unless it was just a couple specific people then your beef is with them.
derogatory remarks? again, examples?
Since we are all gamers the majority of us swear at times. I know that I swear a lot, mostly due to growing up with my grandpa who was in many branches of the armed services, so I got my colorful language from him, plus being a gamer :P I do try to watch my language in places like PAX though.
im afraid im going to have to lol at your last comment though. "Notable lack of camaraderie or even civility with the general public"

Thats all I did during PAX, interact with all the public who approached me (plus all the BYOC attendees). I talked shop with countless people throughout pax. To the point where I was sick of talking about computers or my chair :P I still did it though becuase PAX is one of the few times of the year where I get to have civil conversations about subjects that normally result in a flamewar online.
Prime example is the discussion I had with some guy about the positivies and negatives of windows Vista. We went deep into how it works compared to other things. Normally if that happened online people would just degrade to "vista sucks".
I had nothing but good experiences with the enforcers, although I have to admit to not really interacting with them that much (besides talking to BR at BYOC a few times).
I did some button trading with a few, and chatted with the Dr. Who guy (I think he was an enforcer) when BR made him a target of the scavenger hunt (much to his dismay). Seemed like nice people.

I found the Enforcer's to be quite friendly. Hell, Catboy walked up and talked to me Friday morning out of the blue to chat it up before I even realised he was Catboy. The only thing intimidating about the enforcers was that they are a tall bunch, at least the security related ones which makes sence. I relied on them for directions more than the maps, they always stopped and took the time to help me to where I needed to be.
Props to the enforcers, personally. Things seemed a lot smoother than last year, even with the convention getting another twenty thousand more people.
And to Virtual, for entertaining myself and my girlfriend in the long, slow hours before the doors opened on Friday, with juggling, and a look inside the enforcer psyche.
As to the complaints... if the enforcers seem rude, or grumpy, or offensive... I take it on the cheek, and step back to examine the situation. As little as you have slept PAX weekend, they have probably slept less. They work for five or six days for the convention, all volunteer, because they love the convention. Dealing with thousands of people can put anyone on edge after a few days, especially when us nerds and geeks do, eventually, do really stupid things (and it does happen. Some people always do.) So maybe next time, just take a breath, and talk it out calmly, if possible. They're trying to help, but they are also being fueled exclusively by caffeine and sugar by Sunday morning.
And don't bother calling them the Sith. If they were the Sith, you know you wouldn't have been called a name. You'd be facedown on the ground in a Force Choke licking their superior, condescending, all-access boots. :P

I was amazed by the friendliness and helpfulness of the Enforcers. Even at the last minute of the last day running on little sleep they worked hard and their spirits were high.

You can refer to me as a Sith if you really want. I did have the enforcer cape afterall and im taller than the majority of people there :P
I have to admit, I *was* impressed by your height! I'm used to being the tallest person I know, but standing next to you I felt like a midget! It was pretty cool, I'd not felt like a short person in a long time.
Wow. Seriously? I was going to go ahead and post about how I was told I couldn't stay and watch something, and then later heard how amazing it was by people who apparently had better connections than me. I was going to talk about how any time I attempted to ask an Enforcer something about general policy, the answer was always a curt "No" and a move along stare. I was going to talk about how the couple of times I tried to joke with an enforcer, I got punk ass responses. But now I don't feel I need to.
Tyler, thanks for proving my point for me. Thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart, you dirty elitist fuck.

I have no idea who that guy is, or even if he is really an enforcer so...
Ill still try and reply to your comments:
1) stay and watch what specifically?
2) What did you ask and how did you phrase it?
3) "Joking with" how exactly? Telling a joke or what?
FYI everyone takes jokes differently. Not all the enforcers are alike and some can take offense to some things (I know ive offended a lot of people :P).
Also, if it helps some people have a much more dry/sarcastic sense of humor, which can sometimes be misinterpreted as being rude. I don't know if that's the case in this particular situation, but I know that can often be a cause of conflict between people on opposite sides of the "what they consider to be funny" spectrum.
Aye, I want to give a big thank you to all the enforcers as well! Especially the one who saved my cookie brigading butt from the convention center guys.
That guy is right. The enforcers were terrible and should be punished by the state. I can't believe people are saying "hey, volunteer rent-a-narc, thanks for keeping us in line"
I remember this time I was "Hey you, you have a black shirt. Where is the will-call line?" and he gave me a very polite answer and it was Big Red (I'm a bit slow at times)
