Man, I agree to the whole
    "No booth babes policy"
Almost everyone who goes to these things is either
    A) Married
    B) In a VERY serious relationship
    C) A teenager

    It makes it extremely awkward.
I just want to play the damn game, not have some chick come up and start bouncing around in her underwear. I CAN'T DO TWO THINGS AT ONCE DAMMIT.

Also, I'm really embarrased at some of the games I play with "Booth Babes".
Especially because most of them have spent 50+ hours with the game, and i'm just picking it up for the first time. Especially in the cases where you have the possibility to win swag.
    For example:
The Rockstar booth had not exactly booth "babes" but very attractive women managing the booth.
They would challenge you to Midnight Club.
They would whip your sorry ass all around the place.
    You would feel depressed.
You then go home and cry at the fact you just got pwnd (even worse than owned) by somebody hired off the street/catalog doing something most of us have been doing for a significant portion of our lives.

    That's it.
    I'm done, I promise.
    /rant

Truth on the "girl gamers kicking the living shit out of me". The PMS clan, for instance. On the other hand, the fragdolls were an extreme disappointment...several were acting like booth babes, pretending to hit on the nerdiest of guys so they would buy things. Others were demoing games and failing epicly, such as the one demoing Endwar "One, attack Alpha. ALPHA. FUCKING ALPHA. GODDAMNIT. YES. ONE. ATTACK AL- ONE! ONE ! ONE! ALPHA! FUCK!"

That's a hell of an assumption there.

I'm not saying that all of us over the age of 19 and not in relationships like booth babes or anything.

    I tried playing the MK vs. on the 360, and I pwn3d a guy. It was kinda nice, I've been trying to not fail at fighter games, and I guess it is starting to pay off a little bit. I.. I'm not in a relationship, I don't mind seeing hot chicks in outfits either, but.. they should know what they're talking about. ^^;

I think you might be misunderstanding the source of the conflict.

It's really when "booth babes" are ONLY there for eye candy that people like me have a problem with.
If the women do, great. Bonus. Awesome. If not, awesome, hot women to talk to.

The former scenario means that this was a person who was there to help market the game in a meaningful way. The latter scenario indicates that they were there hoping that the person's physical assets would bring people to the booth.

The former scenario is understandable, and no one has a problem with that. The latter scenario is unfortunate and demeaning: both to women in general (as it sets a "women are to be seen and not heard" tone), and to us gamers (who their choice of advertising seems to suggest that they think we're simpletons drawn to one game over another due to sexual desires).

That's just my take on it though. I know there's another whole thread for this kind of discussion further down the list.

Well the latter is a fact of being descended from apes like it or not. I like it and I definitely disagree that it's demeaning. If anything it's a sign of female power, but I think I can definitely agree with you that it's been discussed way too much already.

Me too. I'm curious which ones you talked to Red, because the Sins girl was the only one I met that was even slightly knowledgeable. You must have some kind of radar.

She talked? I spent 3 hours over the course of the weekend at the Stardock booth, and I never saw her open her mouth once.

I spoke with her quite a bit on Friday. In fact I didn't know she wasn't talking until a few days ago when Neelix told me she didn't and that she was a dev. But then again, by chatting with her, I was probably just perpetuating the stereotype that male gamers are only interested in women. :P

Another thread reminded me about the prize booth thing, can we have printed lists or a big list displayed somewhere for the line of the prize booth?

It seemed like a majority of the holdup was people getting to the front of the line and then taking 30 minutes to decide what they wanted to get and having to ask, "How much is that?" over and over again. You don't have anything else to do in the line while you're waiting so it would be nice to have some pass-around lists to look at so that by the time you get to the front of the line, you have a pretty good idea of what you want and how many points/tickets it's going to be.

This'd probably also cut down a lot on the wait and keep the line moving faster.

This probably isn't possible but...increase the hours in the exhibition halls, I can't tell you how many times I had like two or three hours between when it closed and the concerts started up, that I had like nothing to do.

Second suggestion, try not to have it on the same weekend as DragonCon. Seriously I know a couple people that would have gone to PAX if not for the fact that DragonCon was going on around the same exact time.

Ok, that's all I got for now, there is probably no helping either of these problems but, figured I'd put both of these suggestions out there.

EDIT: For all that is good...switch up the promos in the Main Theater a little....I'm not saying you gotta have new ads on every single loop but seriously...after the fifth or sixth time seeing that Warhammer trailer, I just about wanted to gouge my eyes out

IIRC, DragonCon has always been Labor Day weekend.

PAX has always been the last weekend of August.

This year, they conflicted. It won't be an issue again until 2014, though, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. :)

(Personally, I liked it because it meant I could fly out of Seattle on Monday and not have to take an extra day off work.)

This was my first year at PAX and it was amazing.

    1. I'd like to second the call for big screenings of main theatre events- and the call for sound to be FM broadcast. I wonder if it's possible to add an FM receiver to the goodybag- something so cheap it would only last 4 days.

    2. I don't imagine the line's changing much, but I'd prefer a ticketing system to get into panels etc.- That way at least I could hit the expo floor with confidence.

    3. Food vendors probably need to be informed of the incoming horde- though the one time I had the Pizza it was good.

    4. I imagine this is impossible- but I for one would welcome a Pre-registrant only, Thursday- consisting of just the Expo Hall and lounges- no tournaments, no panels. That way pre-registrants would get a benefit, shorter queues, first crack at the expo and would free them up for panels on later days- and free up the expo hall for others on later days.

    5. All night tabletop gaming? Count me in!

Thanks for an incredible 3 days.

    Also-
"I like the idea of having an onsite blood drive that someone brought up at the comic panel." - I would guess taking 45 000, potentially 3-day, tired people and taking a pint of blood from them all would probably lead a significant 'fainting' problem. Bone marrow register anyone (I think that just requires a vial of blood)?

"So we can see, the 6th floor, alone, has nearly 2.5 times the space of floors 2-5 combined. More than double the space." - no sarcasm- how the hell did gender odyssey get it before PAX?!

    Hail ball.

No kidding. I just hope that when I have a daughter, I raise her with a good enough self-image and with enough self-esteem that she's not just a victim to every image and idea she comes across, but can think and decide for herself -- much like my mother did with my siblings and I.

Whereas the stardock girl, IMHO, felt right at home at PAX:

I don't know if I could craft a "no booth babes" rule that would ban the former, and allow the latter.

I used to be able to quickly articulate what PAX was by saying "It's like E3 without the booth babes". But ever since last year, that's no longer true, and my new explanation takes 10 minutes.

I just hope PAX doesn't conflict with another Northwest convention, Kumori-Con, again. I like both conventions, and I would like to go to both conventions, this year they were on the same weekend. Kumori-Con will be Sept. 5th-7th so I hope it doesn't fall onto Labor Day Weekend again.

That said I really enjoy the convention, here are my pros and cons:

    PROS:

    - Good selection of things to see
    - newer games I didn't expect to see there
    - Gabe & Tycho are always such awesome guys
    - Plastic badges (much preffered over paper badges hehe)
    - Concerts are awesome.

    CONS:

    - lines took too long, some weren't even necessary at all (we waited in one line for getting into Exhibitors Hall, when we could have just went a certain way and got in VERY easily without the wait time)
    - Exhibitors Hall is only open for 5 hrs (which is NOT enough time, believe me)
    - way too crowded, hard to get around
    - they started Friday's Q&A panel while the line was still packing us in, meaning we missed the first 30 mins (which sucks because if I had known this, we wouldn't have even gone to it and stayed in the Exhibitors Hall instead)
    - Some exhibitors took up too much space for no reason, making it hard to walk around things, and because it was packed, I can only assume some companies couldn't fit in there and because of that weren't there
    - they need an artist alley...lol (more of a suggestion, I know, but why not, Udon Comics had their artists doing commissions, and they seemed busy!)

My main suggestion is to make the Exhibitor's Hall have longer hours.

My suggestion for PAX would be to fracture time into several "compartmental" time periods that allows us to visit everything without fear of missing out.

Like, if we could compact a 30 minute panel into a 5 minute "real time" panel.

Also, if we can borrow spatial theory from Doctor Who. Why don't we just make each theater "bigger on the inside", so the speak. Like, walk into Walrus theater and it's actually 20-30x bigger when your inside than it appeared on the outside.

Just some thoughts. But I think Khoo might have the resources for this type of project.

Secret keynote speaker for next year: Steven Colbert

If it was announced publicly it could draw way too many people.

Exceptional speaker and longtime D&D player who frequently drops geek culture references. He made a specific point of honoring Gary Gygax's passing on his show.

Yeah it's likely a long shot, but he has been known to engage in wacky stunts and something like PAX could make for a great segment on his show. Someone from PAX should contact his staff, can't hurt to try.
