It is a period of bitchin' desktops.
Customising enthusiasts, uploading
from their computers, have
won their first victory
against the monotony
of stock operating systems.
At some point in time, 1337
hackers managed to allow
unsigned themes to be used
in Windows XP, as well as
Vista, giving computer users
everywhere the means
to garner jealous looks
from people on the internet.
Drawn by the intrigue of
looking different, internet users
race to this thread,
yearning for the knowledge
that can save their boring
ass computer and restore
freedom to the internet....

-- Post your desktop, icons, themes, customisations and all, so that we can either laugh at your horrible attempt or squirm beneath you, hoping to get your attention long enough that you tell us how it was done.
-- Link to everything even
remotely interesting that's going on in your screenshot. Use a special program to launch all your shit? Link it. Got a wallpaper that's even remotely artistic? Link it. Have a snazzy theme? Link it. Got a kickin' rad Foobar setup? Suck my dick. I mean... link it.
-- Try to put your desktop image in a spoiler (That's a
in front and a
in back, without the spaces.) People might want to scroll right past your image (Because they don't like you), and when they get to your post it's a lot more tedious to scroll past if you've stuck a 1600x1200 image in there.
-- You
might have written the original draft specification for the PNG image format, making you some kind of king of internet image formats. If you're
not that guy, however, then the best type of screenshot to go for is a JPEG with a little bit of compression thrown in to drop the file size. No-one wants to be waiting around for images to load, and even with a broadband connection a page full of images is going to load slower than is necessary.
-- If your image is over 600KB, link it instead of putting it in a spoiler. If someone doesn't want to see your giant desktop image, there's no reason they should still have to download it, even if it IS behind a spoiler tag.

How do I enable custom visual styles with Windows XP
If you have Service Pack 2, then go
here and follow the instructions.
If you're new-school and like to rock Service Pack 3, then go
here instead.
How do I enable custom visual styles with Windows Vista
Oh, so you're into all this Vista shit, huh? I've got no experience with the process personally, but I can't imagine
this will steer you wrong.
Where my bitches at?! (In this case, "bitches" refers to Windows Visual Styles.)
Chill, dawg. If you're riding the XP train into Chinatown, check out these
cool cats.
If you happen to be down with the Vista flava, then we gots shit for you
right here.
Sweet themes, G. What about sprucin' up the ol' backgrounderoony?
I'm so glad you asked. Here are some nice resources for desktop backgrounds you should probably check out if you're looking for something a little less old than whatever you're currently rocking:
--
Deviantart - You can filter by resolution by typing it into the search bar (eg. Type 1280x1024 and click Go and it'll only show images of that size.). There are also categories on the left if you're looking for a particular type of desktop.
--
Mandolux - Aside from this website's strange fetish for what I can only assume are baseball cap symbols, it's a great resource for two and three monitor setups.
--
InterfaceLIFT - So maybe you want to fag out and have your desktop adorned with romantic vistas and verdant countryside? InterfaceLIFT has you covered, homp.
--
Pixelgirl - This shit is off the hook! If "off the hook" means "Cute and colourful". I mean, I don't know. Maybe in some cultures it does?
I'm tired of the Start Menu!
Aren't we all. The world of programs-that-start-things-quickly-and-also-look-pretty is a colourful and vast one, and you'll probably be trying all sorts before you settle, just like cheap women. Unlike cheap women, however, docks and launchers won't give you herpes, so some might consider them a better option.
--
Launchy - Launchy pops up at your command, has you type in whatever you want to run or open, and then disappears again until needed. It's awesome. I haven't used my Start Menu in months.
--
Executor is the new Launchy-type kid on the block, and whilst previous contenders for the Launchy crown have been a bit lame, this one is stuffed full of useful and intriguing features. Maybe you'd like to check it out, even
if you're a Launchy fan like myself.
--
RK Launcher,
RocketDock and
ObjectDOCK are all programs that perform the same function as the dock on a Mac, but in Windows. All three of them are practically the same, with some minor differences that might be woefully important to you.
Is there anything I can do about these low-ass resolution icons?
Indeed there is, fair maiden! Unfortunately for you, but fortunately for me, it involves fallatio and a vist to DeviantArt again. Fellatio optional.
Start browsin', fella. The method of applying these icons might be different for each dock. It should be easy, though. Try right clicking (Right clicking can achieve anything.).
Posts
I'm rocking NiteLite XP Mod. The clock is courtesy of Tclock Light.
The backgrounds are both screenshots from HL2 that I took. If you want to hook up with them yourselves, I've hosted them here:
Half Life 2 - Tower.
Half Life 2 - Train Station.
Also, because I put effort into making Firefox so minimal, I wanted to share my setup with you all:
Bookmarks folder drops down from the bookmarks icon next to the home icon. Reload button changes to stop button when a page is loading. Menu is Tiny Menu.
EDIT: To be on topic:
Is this available in a theme?
Mind describing how you did this? It would be great for my laptop. Right now I'm using littlefox but this looks tons better.
Yeah better safe than sorry
OK. I've changed the link.
It's not a theme. I'm using the standard FF3 theme. I don't think I'd be able to recall how I did everything without doing just as much work as you'd have to do yourself to find out. Mostly it was just deciding that I wanted to get rid of certain aspects of the GUI and then finding out how to do that. Right click -> Customize on the toolbars is your friend.
The one thing that you probably won't find information on is the drop down bookmarks. That bookmarks icon is actually my bookmarks toolbar. Here's a rough guide:
If you need help with anything specific, I'd be happy to lend you assistance.
Spoiler'd for H Scroll rape.

also current wallpaper (not gonna show you my horrid desktop right now)

edit: I think I'm the guy who mentioned 4chan last thread and for that I apologize. I haven't ever gotten a virus from there but I think now I'm going to start being more careful.

Edit: Fixed.
its ubuntu, but i recently updated to the ubuntu eee build. holding off on updating that until some of the glaring bugs are gone that i am worried about
Edit: I have removed the shortcuts at the top of the bar since the bar at the bottom were working. its a bit cleaner now. Also I would post source, but a GIS will bring it up and I cant find the file at the moment to upload somewhere for everyone to grab.
One of these, which should I use?
Or if you've got a nice plain blue wallpaper that would be good also.
Weather from GR? Hey, I lived there for the last five years, till last month. Go GVSU!
Thank you. I put more effort into it than is probably necessary to create an OP, but I love doing it.
Edit: In case some people don't notice and consequently don't appreciate my brilliance, the text at the start of the OP is the scrolling text at the start of the original Star Wars film, with the subject matter changed, obviously. It's still written to sound the same, however.
I didn't notice that at first, perhaps I should hand in my geek card. But :^:
Also, I feel like I should say thanks again for Licorice Redux, because this is by far the longest I've stuck with a theme, and for once I'm not constantly searching for a replacement.
There was a wallpaper dump. It's down right now, due to (I believe) hosting issues. Which is a shame.
Why not just wing over to DeviantArt and type those resolutions into the search bar, then pick out what you like?
I do, but I had grab open for some other stuff anyway :P
Missed this earlier. Go team! I'm just down the road in East Lansing.
Heh, that was my first college choice, but I ended up going to Davenport.
This is my laptop, while I happen to be on it:
Can I get a source on the second one?
What is it?
[edit] Annnd just about finished...
How did you do it. REVEAL YOUR SECRETS.
or Brawl. 4854.6102.3895 Name: NU..
I've revealed all here :winky:

Also, I'd be rocking Chrome right now but there are little niggling problems that mean I can't leave Firefox. Which sucks, because I'm a Google whore and I want to be Chrome-only so badly.
Same with Gtalk, but their lack of interoperability kills me.
Yes, yes I did.
In any case, I would've done it for whichever theme I happened to be using... it's just difficult to remember other themes... (I guess I wouldn't have to do it with Watercolor... but eh.)
I'd like to maximize eg. Firefox and not have it take up the entire desktop.
I would also like to know this.
I'd just like some stuff on my desktop to stay visible all the time without having to use a widget engine.
ShiftWindow doesn't control maximized window dimensions as far as I can tell.
Edit: Burtletoy is that screenshot shopped?
