So I FINALLY decided to get into this thread and take a stab at making my desktops look at least halfway decent. Nothing earth shattering here, both are just sort of a WIP.
Vista desktop:
XP notebook:
I'm not necessarily crazy about having all the icons uniform, I almost prefer them a bit more colorful and out of place.
Whoever designed the clock for that sidebar should have centred it.
Edit: Oh, and with your XP setup, I don't know what's powering that clock/date setup, but is there any way to make that clock white lines instead of a graphic? As in, just flat white lines to outline the face and make up the hands? It would fit in so much better.

I have a MacBook at 1280x800 hooked up to an external monitor that's 1280x1024. Does anyone have any good ideas/sources for wallpapers I could use for these screens?
I've been using the 1280x800 "Exterminate" Dalek wallpaper that I've posted here before, and the 1280x1024 vector Cyberman wallpaper that I don't think I've posted before, but I'm getting tired of this and I want something different.
Here's my current Ubuntu 9.04 desktop. Finally switched back to a lighter theme after using a dark theme for so long.
Your background. Give it to me.
What dock is that? I love that it shows all your desktops, how did you do that?
That is Avant Window Navigator using the default theme in 3D mode. The desktop switcher is a built in (I think, don't remember) plug-in for AWN called Shiny Switcher.
There's also Cedega, which is wine, but for games only.
Don't buy Cedega, it's old wine that doesn't run games anywhere near as well as the current Wine versions do. If you have to spend money for it, do Crossover, which is a sister project.

OSX is set to rotate through them every 30 minutes. The pack does come with higher resolutions, but they scale pretty durn well, so haven't bothered with it.

My current Ubuntu setup. Very OSX-y, globalmenu and all... I'm considering installing Crunchbang and going for a conky-heavy setup, but I also feel like sticking with this one. :P

Please, excuse any socially awkward actions taken by me. I have autism.
For anyone still using Avedesk, I just found a docklet that works as a stacks docklet. Link to the Aquasoft forums: link. It allows you to put a stack docklets anywhere on your desktop and look how ever you want. I have only played around with it a bit so I haven't made a desktop with it yet, but I'm gonna start soon.
Edit here is my new desktop, I'm not sure what I should do with the open spaces on the sides. I may just keep them empty.
Yeah it's not the greatest program ever but I seem to be able to edit enough of it to get it to do what I want. I can't for the life of me get rainmeter figured out enough to do what I want it to do. It doesn't help that I have little to no artistic ability and and very, very basic knowledge of how to do stuff in photoshop.
So far the only thing that I made in that desktop are the icons but they are just clear layers shaped like the background with a decent font I found. The itunes info and the clock are just edited versions of someone's config file for their skin and I took the graphics out. It's all been a lot of trial and error.
I have found out a couple of useful things however by trial and error. If you use the stack docklet, whatever icon you select while making it that's the one it will revert to whenever the program restarts, even though you can change it after it will still revert to that icon. The other thing i figured out is that if you want one of your Pidl shortcuts to run a program you need to put the .exe in the shortcut location box, then put the folder that, that .exe is in the "run in" box. I couldn't get the firefox shortcut to work for about 6 hours until I tried that. Oh and if you install a new font and you want to use it in the config files you need to restart avedesk.
Eeebunutu, compiz, gnome do with the docky skin, rainlendar
Nothing crazy special, but I'm enjoying it. Now its time to make it crazy special.
I had a bit of a hard time finding a nice colourful wallpaper that worked. This is a texture from the stock image section of DeviantArt that I manipulated the colours of.
Something of note, just how little room is taken up by the Firefox window. Tiny menu+fission=<3.
edit: omgomgomgomgomg I just discovered that you can now set Rainlendar to show up in only one desktop. This wasn't the case last year.

Okay, so I just got a new laptop recently and it's such a step up from my old XP machine that was so messed up that it could not display a wallpaper
I want to customize the windows theme, and I've been looking at things like this Halo HUD desktop, this Super Mario World theme, and all the neat desktops that have embedded calendars and different icons and start menus, etc.
I see programs like uxtheme.dll and Rainmeter being mentioned, but then people say to use VistaGlazz and just download themes from DA as well.
I don't know how to code or anything like that, and, ignoring the ethical problems with just stealing the above-mentioned themes, I'd like to find out how to see something like those and make them myself
How did you guys learn how to trick out Windows Vista?
In the meantime - I love RocketDock, where do you guys get your own custom icons for programs?

Making a desktop like the Halo HUD takes more time than it's worth, most of which is spent tweaking every component in Rainmeter to be exactly as it should be. I doubt the result would be worth the effort. If you do want to go ahead with it though, you don't need to do any coding at all.
And making Vista look good is pretty simple. Vistaglazz -> Custom theme from Deviant Art -> Any other desktop components you want.

Also, since you got your laptop recently I am guessing that you probably qualify for the free Win7 upgrade, so don't spend too much time customizing your desktop unless you don't mind having it all go away in 3 weeks when you can upgrade to 7.
I've found that Rocketdock is almost redundant, and have stopped using it because of the new taskbar. Really has streamlined a lot of things nicely. Though doesn't leave much for crazy customizations without the custom themes though. I'm sure it'll be cracked soon enough.
This question has been answered a lot in this thread, but I still can't find it :P
Could anyone toss me the name of the OSX iTunes widget that displays the album art as a CD case along with the artist/song name? Would be much appreciated

If I weren't such a lazy slob I'd try out the Arch thing... but I am.

I'm actually using the TF2 Achievement Icons

I really enjoy this one. Fantastic.
I adore dark themes so.... but then I do something silly like open a browser and ruin the look.

It's probably the most minimal setup I've had when there's no windows open. The standard awesome bar is tiny!

I'm not going to go crazy with customization, but I assume that a lot of the things I'll experiment with will eventually carry over to W7
I upgraded from Vista to W7 and Rainmeter and Rocketdock both work fine.
Custom themes don't, however.
