Huh, terminus never looked like that for me (though because terminus-font didn't seem to work right, I installed it 'by hand' and probably missed something), I fiddled with a few settings up now. Now it looks 20 times better! Thanks a lot.
So I FINALLY decided to get into this thread and take a stab at making my desktops look at least halfway decent. Nothing earth shattering here, both are just sort of a WIP.
Vista desktop:
I'm not necessarily crazy about having all the icons uniform, I almost prefer them a bit more colorful and out of place.
Can I get a source on your wallpaper and/or clock gadget?

Fifth wallpaper from the top (Strange Creature). You need to read the Terms of Use first to download the desired wallpaper. On the plus side, it's in pretty much any size imaginable.
does that work like the lyrics plugin for winamp where it pulls it off an online database or is it just reading file tags?
It's been a while since I've set that up, so the name might be wrong (and I'm logged to Linux now and I need to stay logged for a while, so can't check for sure), but I believe I'm using the Lyrics Show Panel (foo_uie_lyrics, if I remember right). I'm not sure if it can be set up to download lyrics automatically, but I know that if you have the foo_lyricsdb component, you can just highlight the songs you desire the lyrics for (all of them at once), right click, and download the lyrics from an online database. I almost always used that. However, they are text-only, and some songs (like Dogs in the picture) have additional timestamped lyrics that will center the current line and highlight it. Those have to be downloaded by hand, though you wouldn't want to leave that to an automatic program anyway - most of those are desynched.
Yeah I guess that's not really what I'm looking for. What I want is a gen_lyrics type of solution. I don't want to have to add finding lyrics to my music-collecting process.
To contribute: my desktop, which remains largely unchanged since I started using win 7. It cycles through about 180 photos of cities, nature, and outer space
And my foob, now with bigger album art panel. I figured if I was going to spend all this effort replacing my MP3s with FLACs I might as well start getting some higher-res album art as well.
I can't be bothered to reskin my stuff so I just make do with default ugly
I think Lyrics Show Panel actually has an option for automatic lyrics downloading, but again, not sure - I prefer to download lyrics on my own accord anyway . I could check tomorrow.
Lyrics Show Panel can indeed download automatically. Found the first thing I could think of I didn't have in my library online, and it downloaded and displayed the lyrics automatically. There you go .
yea, except for iCal, which is notoriously hard to modify(putting the colour in black required manually changing 4 files), and QuickTime X, which is an icon I love as is, I decided I wanted to go with a square look. I originally had different icons for iPhoto and pages, but while they were square they were a bit bigger and kind of threw the whole thing off.
For the record, the Ps icon is actually Pixelmator, there isn't a nice dock icon that fits for it, so I used the photoshop one, same with Ec, which is Ecto, my blog tool.
How did you make your Windows 7 taskbar like that?
Right-click the Taskbar, select Properties, select the Taskbar tab in the dialog that pops up, change the "Taskbar buttons" combo-box to either "Never combine" or "Combine when taskbar is full."
Meh, we've still got people trying to get back the Windows 95 styled taskbar. That rubs me the wrong way far more than not combining taskbar buttons. :P
[ed] I dunno what I'm arguing here other than goddamn you people that want that fucking start menu back, goddamn you.
the giant icons bother me more than how the startmenu looks most of the time. that and shortcut icons in vista and 7. take up like a quarter of the icon

I've always hated desktop icons, and especially now in Windows 7 theres no reason to ever use them.
So I just started messing around with Rainmeter on my fresh Win7 install today. Does anyone know if there's a config for a large digital clock? All the ones that came with 1.1 seem to be analog, which looks cool, but is slightly less functional for me than a digital.

Here, here. The only desktop icon I have on my Win 7 box is the recycle bin. To that end, nothing pisses me off more than a program that puts shit on my desktop and never gives me the option to say "fuck you" during the install process.
My most used programs (Visual Studio, Notepad++, iTunes, Explorer, Firefox) are pinned, everything else I either access through Steam, the start menu, or various folders I have pinned to the explorer jump menu.

Yep.
Wallpaper is in the dump.
Your Dock icons are nice, wunderbar. I like the consistency.

Here's my current setup. Nothing too exciting as far as extras, but I like the consistency at least.
I just wish there was a way to retheme the dock badge for NetNewsWire so I could get rid of the red.
There are skins all over the damned place. DA is just an easy place to start.
