I have 2 games I loved, from different times in my life.
The first is Rocky's Boots, which was a learning game that was really a ton of fun.
I'm going to paste this blurb for the game because it was pretty impressive:
for the Apple II and PC
by Warren Robinett and Leslie Grimm
Rocky's Boots was a commercial educational software product, published in 1982 by the Learning Company. It won Software of the Year awards from Learning magazine (1983), Parent’s Choice magazine (1983), and Infoworld magazine (1982, runner-up), and received the Gold Award (for selling 100,000 copies) from the Software Publishers Association. It was one of the first educational software products for personal computers to successfully use an interactive graphical simulation as a learning environment. It was a precursor to later simulation products such as SimCity and The Incredible Machine.
Rocky’s Boots was a visual simulation that made it possible for upper-grade-school students to design simple digital logic circuits, using a joystick to move around circuit symbols on the screen and plug them together. The circuit components were AND gates, OR gates, NOT gates, and flip-flops. The colors orange and white were used to show the logic states ‘1’ and ‘0’ of the components, so that as the circuit operated, the signals could be seen propagating through the circuits, as if the electricity was liquid orange fire flowing through transparent pipes.
K so that game owned, AND taught you about electricity!
The next game single handedly turned me into a history buff, and was actually probably the first pure game I played.
Sure everyone's heard and/or played this game, but dangit, I bought it in a thrift store for .25 cents as a 9-year old, and it came with a sweet book style manual! I am pretty sure this game still holds the record for hours played in a single video game, as well as times up past 3am.
The original Final Fantasy was one of my favorite games as a kid. I had to have played through it at least a half-dozen times. I think I finished it once before Nintendo Power sent me a free in-depth strategy guide to the game.
A close second at the time was probably Contra. I played that so much I could beat it without dying. It added to the fun when I was able to play with my sister on the vertical scrolling levels - I'd intentionally try to outpace her to move the game camera up and drop her off the bottom of the screen, killing her.
So many old great games. Wonder if my NES still works...

It was actually a really good strategy game, especially for the time. The cover is a bit doofy yeah, but it was definitely a product of the time.
My favorites were pretty much anything Infocom, starting with Zork, but the best series they ever put out were the Enchanter games (Enchanger, Sorcerer, Spellbreaker). They trashed the entire world that both series took place in so bad, that the next game had to be set before all of them (Zork Zero). Too damned awesome.
Also loved Ultima 3, Populous, and Elevator Action. Ohhh, and when I was really little, I had such a masochistic love of laser games, especially Space Ace and Dragon's Lair.

I had it on the NES and was intrigued by it, but I don't know if the NES version was busted or something because I found it impossible to get a 'good' ending for the planet. No matter how I manipulated and abused the market, the planetary economy always seemed to be crap at the end. I could be the nicest guy, making sure that the idiot AI never had a shortfall in energy or food, or produce exactly as much as I needed and blow the rest on Smithore/Crystite, but everything more or less turned out the same.
Mr. Bird, the diagnosis is you're a chump. The prescription is The Doctor taking your sorry ass to the rack.
Donald Duck's Playground. Apparently "playground" means you spend all day working minimum wage jobs so your 3 lazy smart-ass nephews can take all your money.
Over 20 years later and some of these sports still have yet to be digitized better than they were by Epyx.
It just wouldn't be Star Wars without a Hoth level. Which is why TIE Fighter > X-Wing - TIE's first mission is at Hoth.
I loved em', I used to have the first level of sonic 2 down to the point that I could get to the end with my eyes closed and not die. I'm pretty sure most of my childhood revolved around sonic in some way.
From a computer lab in school I remember we had Oregon Trail with the hunting minigame where it was impossible to hit anything (the old one, not the newer ones with fancy first-person-esque shooting).
We also had Murphy's Minerals which I enjoyed playing; I haven't been able to find any sort of actual site with screenshots or gameplay of it.

Nothing better than a great co-op game to play with your best friend growing up.
Oh my goodness yes.
I loved this game so much. Unfortunately, so did a kid I knew that was kind of obnoxious and was also terrible at it. He would show up and want to play it for like hours on end and we would maybe find a treasure in Great Cave Offensive or something.
Eventually I hid it in my room and when he came over I told him I had lost it. Except when he left and I went to get it out the hiding spot I couldn't find it. I still have no idea what happened to it.

Oh hell yeah. Rock and Roll Racers was the best racing game ever.
I played that game for the first time only about 4 years ago. I concur with your statement.
Ahem.
Rock n' Roll Racing was OK too, I guess.
This game drove you nuts with difficulty. I haven't played since I was in grade school, but I could only get up to the 3rd type of car before the AI racers smoked me. Is it possible to beat this game? I always wondered...
Wow what a great question. That's a tough one. I'm going to go with Super Mario World. Sonic comes in right behind that. Although Contra is probably what I played most often. Man whatever happened to those days.

Back when I was eight or so and all I could afford was shareware. Eventually a buddy hooked me up with Keen 5 and the demo of Keen 6.
It broke my heart when I found out the series will never, ever be finished.
I'm hoping and praying someone does an unofficial Keen 7 someday.
Commander Keen! Man, I played this when I was at around 6 or so. It's only now I remember the game's title.
Also, Scorched Earth.
This one, totally. Me and my cousins played the shit out of this one and its sequel on multiplayer. Landing a Super Nuke taking out half the screen, or having a napalm bomb hit a PIXEL right in front of you thus subjecting you to a facefull of hot steamy pain. Good times.
For some reason, I also loved this game soooo much.
4D BOXING!

Do not believe that the impossible exists. That is why you fail.
Know what game I always thought was swell, but pretty much no one remembers?
Archon, like battlechess but with magic powers.
This is in my top 10 of greatest games ever made. They should really make a version for XBLA; it would sell like hotcakes. It would also get me to subscribe to gold again.
Archon is my number 3. I sorta hated the shapeshifter on the dark side, though.
This thread is awesome. It is a real trip down memory lane, I can almost taste the pixie sticks and bottles of coke. Anyway here is my list:
This game was awesome, it was the first one I ever bought on Atari and I loved it. I named my first pet bird Vanguard in honor of it:
This was my brother's favorite game and deserves mention because we played so much of it:
Then we got an NES and I couldn't stop playing Mega Man 2 (but I know that one has been listed!)
This game's name is no lie:
Ducktales was also awesome:
and so was Maniac Mansion, it was the first game I played that was FUNNY:
Many years later we finally saved up enough to get a SNES. I became instantly obsessed with:
I mean, I wanted to BE Link. What an great game.
Me and my brother played the shit out of:
and
I grew up and played less and less games, but the end-all-be-all of video games will always be:
My parents would rent it when I had appointments at the orthodontist. It was the first RPG I really got involved with. I mowed grass till I had the money to buy it myself and then I saved even more to buy the used version they put on say at the video store my parents used to rent from.
I know that Earthbound fans tend to be a tad bit fervent to the point of dogmatic, but it really was an important part of my adolescence. I will never forget sitting on my bed at night after I was supposed to be asleep, playing through my favorite parts that I had save files at. I always kept one file on Threed and one on Moonside.

Oh god this game. I remember clearly that fucking orange car. You'd be kicking ass in first place when suddenly you'd hear the familiar "doooooooooop!" sound then Orange car just zips past you at twice your top speed and wins the race by a large margin. Such bullshit.

Well, spambot revival aside, this thread can be a hoot.
When people refer to games of a certain era as "when I was a kid!" it makes me feel old. God. I'm gonna have to get use to that.
Anyway, Earthbound was brought up today and I should confess that I never played the game. I've seen it being played, but I can't say I've had any sort of urge to. It doesn't help that Ness was a little tool in Smash Bros.

Also the icon says I posted in here way back when. I wonder what I said... Even money would be on EVO, though Ultrabots would probably be a close second.

this is also a classic that i loved so much growing up:

Pokemon Safari - Sneasel, Pawniard, ????
I remember playing part 3, and there was something to do with snakes and I never got anywhere helpful. It was too hard at the time.

Later on - Star Control 2.
definately the hardest game i ever beat as a kid.
the jumps in the last levels are soooo hard.
doesn't help that alex controls like a paraphlegic lemur either.
