Heh, on PC I remember Kingdom of Kroz, Castle of the Winds, and I played the hell out of the shareware release of Apogee's Secret Agent.
Although it came later, Link's Awakening (for the Gameboy) was probably my biggest fave overall- I guess I was starting to develop my gamer-palate. God I loved that game.
both were great games. The best was when my mom would play Donkey Kong Country with my brother and I. The only level she liked to play was the minecart one on the 2nd map. She would always fall off and swear, making us chastise her for swearing. It was fun stuff
My grandma used to take me on the bus to the mall about once a month for a new game. The day prior i had caught a short review on this quirky little gem on an old Canadian video game show called Video and Arcade top 10. Knowing nothing more than it "looked awesome" I begged my granny to pick it up and the rest is pure win.
The music will forever be etched into my mind, and I now have the hankering to bust out my Game Gear and give it a whirl.
the other day I saw a James Pond Collection on the GBA for 10$
Shit, really?
I never even heard of the 3rd one 'till I looked on Wikipedia for that cover art. Wikipedia says "Operation Starfish was one of the largest games to be made for the Sega Mega Drive and for many retro gaming fanatics it is considered to be of a higher calibre than Super Mario World; both in gameplay and humour."
I think I may need to hunt that collection down and dust off my GBA.

I checked; It's only the second one that got a GBA port. Also a DS one for some reason.
Oh god you poor child. That game sucked so damn hard. (power rangers the movie the game is what sucked)

Food Fight for the Atari 7800 - you run across the screen to the slowly dripping ice cream cone, while hurling food at angry chefs who come at you out of sewers.
Probably Earthbound. I remember being really young the first time I played it, because one of my friends had to tell me how to do PSI attacks. I didn't even know I had them.
One of my favourite games ever and of course I think I've played Bubble Bobble and Street Fighter so much that they're basically part of my DNA now
Was also another one I use to play heaps on the master system, never owned it though always rented it. It was a platformer with a fox on the cover but you could pick other animals as well. Can't remember the name though
I was going to say Rainbow Islands, and I definitely loved it as a kid, but apparently the NES version I know and love was inferior (I've brought it up on the forums before).
Super Mario World, mostly because I didn't have a super nintendo, and I felt (quite correctly, to be frank) that the levels were more fun than sonic 2's "hold right" style gameplay.
Been thinking about giving a PS game a go on the VC. Is PSII a good game to start with? Are they stand-alone games, FF-style?
PSII is a good one to start with, but it's not nearly as forgiving as present day RPGs. You will have to grind a lot at the beginning, but it's an experience that's well worth it.
As a kid, just the idea of mixing sci fi together with fantasy was a total mindfuck for me. I never ended up playing the tabletop game cause I didn't have any friends that geeky, but I did end up devouring every piece of literature from it that I could find.
Oh god, Drez. I was thinking about that game a couple weeks back and had no idea what the name was. I don't even remember what it was that you did in it, just a vague memory of the graphics and the map.
Now someone post that weird puzzle solving game where you were in an archipelago or some shit. I have vague memories of that too.

PS2 is really old school (as in 8-bit old school) so unless you're a big retro fan, you might want to just skip on it. PS4 on the other hand is a fantastic game that has held up really well and is highly recommended to any fan of JRPGs.
PS4 does have nods to the older games here and there, but it works just fine as a standalone game as well.
And I loved Tink Tonk in the Land of the Buddy Bots.
So what about you?
Also, does anyone else remember the above game?
HOLY CRAP. HOLY CRAP HOLY CRAP HOLY CRAP.
I have been thinking of this game for YEARS without knowing the title. Literally about 20 years or so. I posted some info about it in the "Name that game" thread, hoping someone would catch on.
It's as though you've cured some incurable disease for me. I am so grateful!

Now wait a minute, here. You're telling me we're three pages in and nobody's mentioned Oregon Trail? What's wrong with you people?
If I had to pick favorites... SMB3, SMB/Duck Hunt, Star Fox, and X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter. And you know that one guy in the world that kind of liked Bubsy? Yo. Don't ask me why, because I do not have an answer. I think I was a bit masochistic.

Captain Skyhawk for the NES, hands down. When we bought it, I was only five or so, and it proved a bit too hard for me to play on my own. So I'd sit on my dad's lap and we'd share that tiny NES controller; he'd control the plane while I massed the fire button. We would only ever get to the fourth level before running out of lives, but we had fun.
Then, last year, I found the game after having forgotten about it for years. I fired it up and beat on my first try.
Edit: Hey, it was developed by Rare. Never knew that. Perhaps a sequel is in order; it has been 18 years.
Probably Earthbound. I remember being really young the first time I played it, because one of my friends had to tell me how to do PSI attacks. I didn't even know I had them.
That and probably Mystical Ninja on the 64.
It must be like 7 years since I played that game, and I can still hear the music in my head.
Pitfall for the 2600. I Still remember the first time I played it and I was so young I didn't even have the coordination to hold the joystick properly.
Dear sweet Zanzibar, that brings back memories. Was that the one where you had to get that turtle out of the pipe with the oil? My barely formed proto-brain had trouble grasping that one.

I miss the days of truly insane game ideas.
I would appreciate a BC:R style redo of Crystalis, it aged better than most stuff on the NES though.
And I as well with the sword thing. I was like the guy from superbad with the cocks, except with swords.

[edit] Ha! Psycho Fox found it
It's, umm, still my favorite game though. I played it about a year after it came out, and I've replayed it every year since.

I also was really fond of Shining in the Darkness, but I seem to be relatively alone in that sentiment.

Edit: Oh hell, how did I forget SNES Sim City?
All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.

The music alone is worth the price of admission.
