Did anybody else notice that the "Japan Import Soundtracks" were, infact, bootlegs?
I'm kinda choked. I bought FFVII: Piano Collections, which is amazing, but would not have forked over $16 had I known they were fakes. I don't know what I'm getting at, I guess I just wanna know if I'm along on this?
Anyways, PAX rocked!!
There was a website with a very detailed guide to help you spot bootleg anime and game CDs, but I don't know if it exists so this blogpost with a bunch of bootleg company logos on it will have to suffice.
I don't even bother purchasing import CDs from anywhere but a reputable online site like CDJapan, Play Asia or YesAsia nowadays, but if you're going to be out buying CDs at a convention, research ahead of time which companies actually make the CDs you are interested in (a simple Wikipedia search will reveal that), and keep in mind that unless they are on sale or something, a 1-disc album goes for $20-$25 in Japan.
Pretty sure that place with the anime plushes was selling bootlegs. You know right away they're bootlegs by the price. There weren't even official logos or copyright info on them.
Pink Godzilla had the real ones. *hugs Club Nintendo CDs* Totally worth the dough I sunk on 'em. I hate bootlegs. Only the real deal for me.
yeah legit japanese CD's are far more expensive, as are the DVDs.
But hey! At least it's a pressed bootleg and not obvious.
I have a pressed bootleg DVD of Abaranger vs Dekaranger (I only bought it because the official R2 doesn't have subtitles) and I was at Sakuracon and there was a company selling DVD-R's of hard to find shows (tokusatsu from the 70s and such) that I'm fine with buying on DVD-R since there isn't anything official
but they had bootlegged copies, of my bootleg DVD of aba ranger.
Frankly, I was completely baffled when I saw that booth clearly selling bootleg goods. PAX had come across as very professional in all other areas of the convention that I had seen, and then I came across these bootlegging losers that every anime con worth its salt knows to shut out by now. Seriously, I hadn't seen such an obvious bootleg CD booth in years before seeing the one at PAX. Jeebus. There should be a bit more scrutiny about who gets to sell that kind of merch in the expo hall. o_O
It's impossible for a convention to screen all the product of every dealer before they set up shop.
If you don't like a dealer selling bootlegged merchandise at a convention, I would suggest taking it up with the people running the convention after you notice it.

I bought a Domo Kun wallet that the packaging has a picture of Disney's Stitch on it. Found that to be suspicious.
