i kinda want to get something that's chambered for .223 since i'm pretty familiar with firing a round that size.

You need to obtain a non-restricted firearms license (your PAL), which requires some tests and 3 hours of boredom. If you know anything about guns, it is really hard to fail the test. After that you can go purchase a registered firearm, do the transfer process and then you have a gun. However, you must keep the firearm locked up and separate from its ammunition. If you google Canadian gun laws, you will find more exact information.

It sounds like a pain in the ass, and it is. Owning a hand gun is even more annoying as you need a transfer permit to move it from your house to the range.

I actually bought a Colt peacemaker replica for my dad for his 60th birthday. One of the nicest guns I've ever fired. Simple and efficient.

The other day one of my friends was telling me about the .22 pistol her dad forced her to take when he moved her into her college apartment.

When I told her I didn't own a firearm, she seemed honestly shocked.

I'm still not entirely sure how to take that.

a .22 pistol probably won't stop anyone. getting shot with it wouldn't be something desirable, but .22s have less than ideal stopping power

No see, what you need is something capable of removing said human skull or ribcage entirely

Anything less than that is totally insufficient for self defense

Having a pistol shoved in your face is frightening enough to stop most people, doesn't matter what it's loaded with.

i'm not sure if blowing someone's head clean off with a hand-cannon can be written off as self defense

best thing for home defense is a big shotgun loaded up with .00 buck and a real loud pump. my step-dad's cop buddy said most criminals shit all over themselves when they hear a pump jacking a fresh shell into a street howitzer.

Actually, a 22 is a very desirable gun for killing someone. The 22 will penetrate the skull but will not exit, instead it will bounce around inside turning your brain into mush. Same thing in the ribcage. Plenty of wounding action as it bounces around, causing major internal bleeds.

This way, your target is plenty of dead or a piece of broccoli and you don't have to worry about blowing his head off and then accidentally killing someone behind him.

    Absolutely.

I imagine I would still purchase a handgun first, for general self-defense, because I want one for travelling in my car, and that's likely to come before I feel a need for home defense. But eventually, I definitely plan on getting a pump shotgun.

And I'm also less likely, when actually firing the shotgun, to kill the neighbors.
