Have LOTS of RAM.
From what I hear, Vista is a bloody RAM hog. Not sure why, just that it is. RAM is cheap as hell. I'm getting 4GB for the HTPC I'm building for under $50, IIRC.
As long as you have two gigs it will run better than XP runs.
Don't disable UAC or superfetch or anything. It'll run slow for the first few days then start running way better. Vista learns you as you use it. It starts preloading often used stuff into RAM so you can access it faster.

It appears to take up a lot more RAM than it actually does. It pre-caches tons of stuff into RAM if there is lots available but will release that for use by programs if the amount of free ram gets low.
I’d try Vista except 1) I don’t feel like paying and 2) I use my PC so rarely anymore that it actually sits in my closet until I need to rip a CD or watch a video that’s not on YouTube.

It's quite hideously ugly on the inside. All those buildings in the quad that look all kewl? Fancy shells around 70s office building style warrens.
The only buildings that are really neat on the inside are Suzalo library and the old observatory and the Physics building.
