Wait.. that's not in any Freespace 2 I've played. Can someone else with the GOG version confirm or deny it being there? Is it just because I'm using the launcher and updated textures?
That was there when I first installed the game. Haven't seen in since I started using the SCP though.
Hey, not sure this is the right place to ask, but I've been trying FSport before I play Freespace2 and every time I hit an enemy instead of smoke I get black squares that almost completely obscure the target. Anyone else having this issue or know of a fix? Is it going to happen in FS2 or just while I'm playing FSPort. I'm using the 3.6.9 Official Release and the 3.6.8 Zeta Media VP's.
You need to get the .OGG cinematic pack if you want the cinematics in SCP. I just discovered this myself, after having to reinstall it all because it broke itself somehow.
EDIT: Ah yes the black box bug. I had it too, but I forget the fix. What EXE flags are you using?

Can you say where that cinematic pack is, or is that wandering into grey territory?

Now I can.
The Freespace Open installer now NO LONGER provides retail files! This means I can post it here WITH ABANDON!

Which has basically been taken apart and remade. There are no models that are ripped directly from the original, they've all been remade or converted in some way.
Don't go saying stupid shit unless you know what you're talking about.

EDIT: Rolo, that is correct.
Derivative works are covered under copyright law, and that would definitely count. Plus IIRC they're using the voice files directly.
EDIT: For other examples, see all the "cease and desist" letters that get sent to mod makers. The Halo RTS, almost any Star Wars mod that gets a lot of attention, etc. All new textures and models, but based on covered stuff, so it isn't legal.
If a cease and desist letter appears from the basically-defunct Interplay when the FSPort team has been at this for no less than 5 years, I will very very surprised.
Either way, the option exists, you don't have to download, etc. etc.
There's a giant argument going on over it in the HLP forums if you're interested in continuing this argument. I'm not, honestly.
Sooo... Awesome game, played it for a long long time back in the days.
Got it from GOG the other day and tried the tips from the Freespace Open wiki about installing and i noticed the mentioning of OSX and Freespace without certain death. Anybody know anything more about that? I can't seem to find anything usefull about installing Freespace Open on a mac but the installing notes tell me something different. So should I search around ebay for a Mac Copy or is it possible with the GOG version to work on my OSX?
I am playing this on my Bootcamp anyway, but i dislike the switching between the OS... This game makes me wanna use windows on my Imac...
I completed the campaign the other day, and true enough, no final cutscene. Think it's a good enough reason to play through without using the SCP stuff and see how it fares.. although looking at the screenshots in the OP, I'm sure it never looked as good as those. The explosions still looked like old ones, and I don't think ships ever looked as nice as those.
Ok, so I just want to get this straight. the FS2 installation files used to be ok to download, but now that GOG is selling FS2, now it's no longer kosher?
Like others have said, I have the retail cds, but it was just a matter of convenience.
wooo, finally installed this from GOG, along with the FOpen stuff in the OP. Having never sat down with a PC flight game before I'm pretty curious.
so far my attempts to squidge the controls onto a PS2 pad have proven... optimistic.
what's the going rate for one of these fancy joystick jobbies anyway?

Got Freespace 2 a GoG, got Freespace open, and am now enjoying the hell out of the campaign with the wonderful pretty graphics.
...but now I'm at a mission, where I have to protect my crusier from astroids... only that the astroids are invisible...
not only that, they are simply not there. Everything I throw at them go right through the white box they were nice enough to give me, yet they still manage to impact and damage the crusier, eventually destroying it without fail.
There's a thread here on the HLP forums regarding the asteroid issue. From a quick skim-through, it sounds like you should try different builds and see if that resolves the issue.
Click the Jpeg/BMP texture option in the Features Tab under Graphics if you're running a 3.6.9 EXE.
That will fix the asteroid problem.
EDIT: Also, on the FS2 Retail files front: If you download them without paying for them, you are a pirate now. There's no legal shield for you to hide behind unless someone actually physically sends you burned copies, which is protected by the EULA.
I am on mission 37. I had a great time playing so far. Some of the stuff they do is awesome. I love it. But it hasn't attained "epic classic" status to me like it has for some people that have played it nonstop or think of it as one of their top ten games ever. I'm wondering if this is because I didn't play it in the context of its time, and I'm making this post so I can set my anticipation level for the rest of my enormous backlog.
I just finished TIE Fighter and I guess it took me a while to get used to the switch from extreme dogfighting (round and round and round) to fairly quick-and-dirty missions. The story is cool, capital ships blowing up is amazing, and there are a few extremely memorable missions, but I'm not even sure if I'm that excited to play it again in the future.
Also, I am using the SCP thing but I must not have the right mods installed because the game doesn't look that great. It's satisfactory but there's pretty basic texturing.
Okay, I finished it and realized the game keeps getting better and grander with each mission. Really impressive and can't wait to go back and play some mods or the FS1 campaign.
Oh my god why did you make this thread why did you make this thread why did you bump it why why why oh god.
Why would you do that.
That was mean.
Freespace does things to me. I loved it so much that I played it with a rollerball mouse and [strike]liked[/strike] [strike]adored[/strike] became utterly consumed by it anyway.
And the mods. Oh god the mods. Giant ships followed by even gianter ships followed by ships that took up the entire map and dodging beam weapons and WHY DID I CLICK ON THIS THREAD WHY.

*wails like a broken hearted child*
What mods are you referring to? The only ones I ever used were the SCP and a mission pack once or twice.
Calling them mods was probably the wrong term, there. I was referring to the user made campaigns Derelict and Inferno, along with another one I can't recall the name of but involved earth invading GTVA space.
Derelict was creepy as hell to play in the dark at 3 a.m, as I recall. Possibly Inferno as well, but I mostly remember the big kabooms in that one. And it is, in fact, possible to make a mission in Freespace creepy. A game where you fly a space ship and shoot things. It boggled my mind.

Heck, one or two missions in the regular campaign creeped me out.
The first mission where you encounter the Sathanas in FS2. In the nebula all you can see are those massive beams of energy cutting through your capital ships. Then at the end of the mission you see something ginormous emerging from the haze, you can't even tell what it is or what it looks like except for the jagged prongs protruding ahead of it and you can't hit the jump drive fast enough.
Fuck the mission where you're supposed to bomb the turrets of the Sathanas. That mission right there made me stop playing Freespace 2 because I have no fucking idea how I'm supposed to get a lock on a turret and get close to it whilst evading flak fire and screening fighters.

You have to order your wingmates in first to just generally get killed, wait for a lock and then rush in and dual-fire your bombs at each beam cannon. Make sure you do it as you're directly facing the Sathanas, or the cannons will take way less damage and you'll have to do additional re-arm sequences.
Remember that you don't actually have to destroy all of the cannons to complete the mission - the mission that follows immediately after gives you another chance to finish the job.

I'm aware :P I'm just saying that it couldn't be all that much bigger if they included the cinematics. It just seems odd to me.

HERE! DO EEEEET!
Wait, so that no longer provides the full download because Good Old Games is selling FS2 now?

I mean, it doesn't affect me because I still have my original discs, but it was nice not to have to dig them out when I wanted to reinstall. :P
Anyone up for some dogfights?

I'm also resurrecting the multiplayer offer over Hamachi, because that could be fun.
Long live GOG for that matter. Seriously awesome service, some classics simply have not been beat, even today.

Now and then I'd wave at a passing Shivan while I held down the fire button. I was very much doing it wrong.
The 3.6.10 MediaVPs have been released.
And just my luck, here I am sitting around waiting on my hard drive RMA.
Just as my friend is getting into this in fact. Time to Coop it up.

Reinstalling FS2 right the hell now boyo----!
Man, that took them a hell of a long time to get that pack out.
