That's what I do for Source games. I turn on vsync, set everything to high. Every once in a while it drops to 45 fps, but that's still smoother than a TV or movie.
High level players will insist that the extra frames, even if you don't see them, are important for smoothness and gameplay.
By "high level players", do you refer to people who play CS 1.6 at the lowest possible graphical level so that they can get 300 FPS? Unless people like fake posting on the Steam forums such people do exist.
All my graphics are on high, I just use DX 8.1..... If you tried it, you'd understand
Only diff from 8.1 and 9 is alittle brightness, but I get atleast 30 more fps and its more consistent.
Im around 80-130fps - (IN ACTION)
But your monitor can only show 60fps. 75fps if you've got an expensive one. You're saving for frames you can't use at the expense of HDR and Shader 3. I mean, it's up to you, but framerates over 60 are basically wasted.
I wish more people realized this.
I'd rather have a guaranteed minimum framerate of >60fps and sacrifice detail - then I can turn on vsync for a nice tear-free image and not have to worry about it taking a sudden stutter-drop if I drop below 60.
Of course, I'd take 60fps at any point. I don't even get it staring at a wall in spawn.

I hate the way Source does Vsync. With my LCD refresh at 60hz, if it drops below 60 it immediately snaps to 30 and that's just way too low.

Let's say your rig ran the game at exactly 60 FPS(without vsync on). Theoretically, you could have *just under* a frame of lag added to your input because of this. I know it's 1/60th of a second, but every little bit helps in high competition. Get it to 120 fps, and that minuscule super tiny extra lag is cut in half!!! Heh.
Yes, Valve could poll input in a separate thread at a faster rate than what's drawn, but I can't see a point to that without visual feedback... so I doubt they do.

They do. The default USB mouse polling rate is 125Hz, so most games aim for at least that level of smoothness. Speaking of smoothness, turning on "smooth mouse" tends to make you input-lag.
I'm not a pro gamer or anything, I just hate feeling delayed/disconnected from the machine, and having a perceptible delay between "physically moving the mouse" and "game reacts" is annoying.

One of the servers is on cp_gravelpit_alps_rc1 right now, and I don't have it. It was downloading pretty slowly from the server, and a Google search turns up a download link that cut out after 100kb or so. Is there somewhere else I can get hold of it? I searched on FPSBanana, and it doesn't seem to be there.

I think I may have said that wrong. I mean, I know getting 100+ fps will only draw so fast(60 or 75 for most monitors), but I completely agree that it plays smoother(or should I say reacts quicker/better?) because the input is being polled more often. But...
Ah, nevermind. I don't really know how to describe what I want to say, and it's damn unimportant, too. But yeah--more FPS, even undrawn, equals profits fo' real real.

I know what you mean:
the game ticks at a certain rate internally, and you're concerned that by limiting your FPS to 60Hz, you also limit the game's internal clock and force it to wait for the next cycle to check your input, resulting in lag if you move just after the input polling cycle finishes. But Source polls pretty goddamn fast I've found, at least on machines better than mine.
tl;dr - vsync doesn't affect input lag in Source

This is awesome, but how the hell did you do keyboardless CS? Was it mouse-only? Weird binds and sniping only?
Keyboardless CS.
I had my Vista computer, all nice and new and sexy and I brought the box itself to my cousin's house. He had everything else. And then we find out his keyboard isn't a USB keyboard. His mouse is a USB mouse, though.
So, basically, I went and did everything mouse-only, started CS, went to options and I think my binds where:
Mouse1: Strafe Left
Mouse2: Strafe Right
Mouse3: Fire
Mwheelup: Jump
Mwheeldown: Reload
We did pistol rounds, because I had no buy menu. I mean, I could have switched off Reload, but I was playing in an actual server a few times. I'd have to run at an angle, strafing the whole way and jumping (just in case someone was shooting at me and I couldn't see them, I figured jumping would = less damage)
Anyway, we had a few fun rounds until I freaked.
All I had was a mouse. It was in a window. I could see the desktop. But wait...How does one get out of the game? With only a mouse? I challenge you to figure out how I got out of CS with only a mouse with those buttons above, WITHOUT having to restarting the computer or unplugging it.
Hilarity ensued that entire day.
Also, I eventually went and played CS with 2 mice. One cordless one with insane sensitivity and another one on a tablet, with lower sensitivity. Same binds as above, and I wish I could bind the mouse buttons on each mouse separately. But whatever. It was still great fun.
BTW: 2 mice = 1 mouse for looking around, turning corners, another mouse for making those precision shots. It worked really, really, really well. I just wish I could walk straight.
Had a lot of fun last night being medic despite being stabbed crazy fast by Quaz&Wally a few times, well. he mostly got the soldiers I was healing by waiting by an entrance, swooping in and then cloaking and running away. I don't think I ever healed him though, wooo.
And I did not appreciate that Flippy could run into my 2nd CP in Well, snipe me and only me, and then run out. I thought I was safe when I wasn't in the open or by windows. I was wrong. But then Q&W switched to my team and stabbed Flippy a bunch so I felt better.
I enjoyed facestabbing you and Kupi with all-talk on. I must have gotten team swapped like 3 times last night.
Also, I'm starting to notice a problem. I'm often taking side routes and trying to get behind the enemy to backstab them as they approach my team, but this has the strangest side effect of me completely missing the presence of sentry guns. I completely missed like two or three on Badwater Basin, and I completely missed a really obvious gun on Dustbowl. Dudes on my team really need to point them out or some shit, I can usually take them out unless there's like 2 or 3 well guarded ones.
You stabbed me plenty on Well, but I thought we had turned alltalk on during dustbowl. I don't recall seeing you a lot once we hit that, maybe you were on my team. Oh wait, you did get switched at one point.. hm...
EDIT: Nm, we did turn it on during well, but you were swapping teams so much I wasn't sure where you were anymore.
And at one point after you stabbed an engineer or the other medic on well, I freaked out because you cloaked and I had no idea where you were. So I yell into my mic, "heavy! spy is around still! quick, circle of death!!!" and with that, my heavy fired his minigun and rapidly begin to spin around. I think you were long gone by that point.
I remember facestabbing Kupi on dustbowl, and asking if I had facestabbed somebody, and I think Kupi started going nuts, then I was like, "I think I facestabbed Kupi, did I facestab Kupi?"

Now, I've officially done two crazy things with Valve FPSes. No keyboard for CS. No mouse for TF2.
BTW e-peen shots from no mousing:
Take note at the well one. TWO BACKSTABS. With no mouse. Maybe our spy players should start using the numpad to walk around.
Also, I was trying pyro...and it seriously isn't Mouse1+W=win (NUM_8+Q=win), because you can't dodge anything very well. Strafing is so useful!
Uh, and then I tried scout, killed tyrannus once, direct shot to the face. Not sure who else I killed who is notable.
EDIT: Also that one destruction is from helping someone take down an SG. Fuckyeaaah.
EDIT: Also, tried sniper and failed miserably. Then again, my sensitivity was at 500.
