Need a hard drive for backup purposes.

I want to get another sata hard drive to use strictly as a backup drive that I will monthly make a copy of my drive to and store somewhere other than hooked up inside my case.

What does everyone use for this? I'd prefer not to use an external one as I still don't trust them as much but something standard, this way if my main drive blows I can just hook it up inside and go on my way until I get a replacement.

The Samsung F1 series are monsters, so if you don't already have one, I'd recommend getting one of those. However, if you're buying an internal drive, pretty much any SATA II 3.0gb/s 7200RPM 16MB+ Cache drive will do you.

    The main factor is price/gb.

Are Samsung drives reliable? I have never used one before...

Is that really a 1TB drive for 150 bucks? Holy god, where have I been on HD prices.

As far as the reliability goes, if you back up your data then unplug the drive, it should never go bad. Keeping it off removes any kind of wear and tear on it.

Wow maybe I shouldn't have ordered a Samsung.

Looking at their RMA and warranty they offer 0 support on any bare drive bought, which is how just about all of them are sold.

Maybe I should return this thing the moment I get it and order a Seagate or WD drive who actually support their products.

I don’t know much about hard disks, but I’ve been using two of these externally (one as media drive, one as its backup).

One of them may be janky but I’m not sure—the other seemed messed up but it was just the result of my Firewire port being screwy.

Dunno how much help this is.

Why didn't you get the retail box? The Samsung's performance is worth the additional $13 for a retail, warrantied drive.
