For a short while now it seems like my laptop takes minutes (sometimes over 10) to startup or shutdown. I'm running Vista, and it used to be incredibly fast. This happens whether I'm connected to my domain or not. I'm a fairly minimalistic person, running only what is required by work (Altiris and Symantec AV). The only other things on bootup are little things like the touchpad controller and bluetooth.
Are there any utilities that can see what's causing a hangup on bootup or shutdown to help alleviate this? It's driving me nuts, especially the shutdown (which takes the longest) which can take like 10 minutes or so when I'm trying to shut down and go home.
Whoa whoa whoa. Formatting is not a solution. Usually it's just a program that Vista is having trouble shutting down. It's a lot more careful about making sure things close properly than XP was. Check out this link for more. Let me know if you get stuck.
Well, Vista apparently isn't aware of any issues. I checked my error logs and I do have some warning/serious/critical errors regarding bootup and shutdown, but they don't tell me what is causing it, only what time it is taking, and they don't appear in the "easy" form that the website shows.
Guess I'll just need to disable things and see if that helps, and enable one by one to see if I can find the culprit.
I am happy to see that Vista does have it's own bootup/shutdown monitoring though. I thought I may have to get a third party tool for that.
In my experience, this sort of thing is almost always AV.
When logging in or out of my domain account at work, it takes noticably longer than the same PC on my personal account, and much longer than my desktop at home. This is the only profile that uses an AV program.

I'd imagine this is also due to log in scripts and group policy being applied.

Symantec. Google SARC removal tool or something like that. then install AVG antivirus. (it's free, and doesn't eat you.)

It must have been an update to SAV though because it was running quickly before while SAV was on it. SAV is the enterprise version and required for work. I can't remove it.
Wait, this is a work computer? Why don't you talk to the IT guys at your job and be like "Hey, yeah, my computer takes 10 minutes to boot. Is that normal for our build?"

I am the IT guy. I'm also one of two of us running Vista (out of 100s of computers) just because.
So wait, if you're the IT guy, can't you talk to your boss about SAV causing slow load times (and demo it for him) and recommended an alternative?
Don't you have a machine that you can use for testing stuff like this?
I could, but SAV has been very good in the past, and the price is not bad either. We switched from TrendMicro last year and it is so much better.
And yes, I have a machine I can use to test all this stuff, but this laptop is practically my personal computer too (desktop died, and using an old laptop from my father-in-law till I get around to fixing it) so I figured I'd tinker with Vista on it since SP1 was out.
I'm gonna fiddle with things for a bit and see if I can pinpoint the slowdown so when we do end up upgrading everyone over to Vista we will know what to expect.

Ohh man. I could not disagree more about SAV. I just finished banishing SAV from all our machines in June. Using ESET NOD32 here. Here's a simple test. Disable SAV (unload the service) before shutting down Vista and see if it decreases shutdown time.

Well that sucks. I can't easily just reinstall my work computer. So many annoying programs to add back in.

sounds like a decent deal to me.
