I'm in the process of shopping for a new HDTV as well as a receiver and speakers to go along with it. I'm not sure what I'd like to spend (though the cheaper the better, but I don't want to completely compromise quality either).
What I'd want:
1080p, for teh awesomeness. I get HD channels so I'm ready to roll with it.
5.1 surround sound capable
Decent speakers to go along with receiver
HDMI switching - So I've heard that some receivers will actually NOT pass 1080p out to the TV but rather only 1080i or 720p, which would suck. I really want to avoid fucking things up because if I paid for 1080p, I want to see some 1080p dammit.
anyways, I'm not sure if this is detailed enough cause I don't know the home theater world well enough. So just ask if you need more details...
There is a great TV thread in the tech forum. You will get the best suggestions if you tell us how much you want to spend (use 80-200 of that on a Logitech Harmony Universal remote), how big of a TV you are considering (if you don't have size restraints let us know), how far from the TV you sit (if you sit too far 1080p won't make a damned bit of difference), and what equipment you will be using with your new set up (you might have a crap DVD player and not know it).
If you want help with setting up your surround sound, pictures of your room and a diagram are crazy helpful.
