My nose is under attack from blackheads. The small ones don't bother me much, but I get big ones on occasion that stick out (to me, anyway). I've been told just to wash my face and they will go away, but that doesn't seem to take care of all of them. Is there anything I can do about it?
sometimes I get dry flaky skin, but it's pretty rare. Probably because I drink copious amouts of water.
Also I started using the alcohol free pads simply because they're cheaper
I actually don't like the exfoliating face washes because the hard bits in them scratch your face up a bit.
Personally, I use Cetaphil with a washcloth in the shower and then follow up with a Witch Hazel astringent and an oil free moisturizer in the morning and, at night, use Cetaphil again but with Proactiv afterwards. Proactiv is harsh on some people's skin, though, and I think it only works on acne (which I occasionally get) rather than blackheads (which I never get).
The best time to do it is once you're out of the shower and your pores have opened up from the steam. Without a shower, though:
1.) Wash your hands.
2.) Wash your face with warm water.
3.) Wash your face with a face wash (I use a Neutrogena one, it's great).
4.) Pinch the blackheads from your nose using your two forefingers.
6.) [Optional but recommended] Wash your face again.
7.) Dry your face off with a clean towel.
Here is a really disgusting video on how to do it:
Exfoliating the dead skin cells off your face will help some--it reduces the potential for pore blockage. That Swiss whateverthecrap made with crushed apricot pits or whatever can work wonders. Not a short term solution, but something to consider for future prevention.

I do it every 2-3 days and I haven't had a pimple ever since I learned how to do it properly.
Uugggghhhh, is squeezing that shit out really necessary? I do that sometimes with whiteheads, but I'd much rather find a different solution than brutalizing my face every now and again.
Anyway, if you are going to do something like this to yourself, you should get some Neosporin and place bits of it over any areas you may have squeezed.
A doctor told me that sometimes those facewashes fuck up your face more than they help. She said just regular soapll do the trick alot better. But who the fuck knows. Skin Care seems to be a personal crapshoot.
I hate my skin. My nose is super oily (if I squeeze it, oil seeps out, some translucent, some opaque and thick), but I have dry skin around my eyes that flakes off like dandruff. Really gross.
EDIT: and I had none of this as a teenager. This all started at 18 or 19. I was completely blemish free through puberty.

Probably completely unnecessary, unless he was going at it with a knife.
I use soap and water, leave it on while I brush my teeth, then rinse. I get minor acne/blackhead break outs when I avoid doing this for a few days. Everyone skin is different. See what works best for you.

I just switched to this stuff and oh my God what a difference. It is incredibly abrasive, but after you get out of the shower (which is where I wash my face) your face feels amazing. It makes my skin so smooth and it has helped with oil and blackheads on my nose. It really does feel like sand paper but it gets my face so clean.
I use biore strips every other day, and wipe my face down with stridex pads nightly.
They are awesome. Should you decide to try it remember to wash your face before. They don't stick as well when you have oil on your face.
Just wash with water or use face soap? I have Neutrogena soap that helps with acne, but during the dry months (i.e. now until around June) it really dries out my face.
Also, where can I get these Biore strips? Would a common drug store have them?

You can find em in any drugstore in the skin care aisle. Though I think using them every other day might be a bit excessive. Once every few weeks is plenty for me, and it feels good to see all the little spikes of crap I can pull out of my pores

Can someone explain to me the difference between white heads and black heads?
Right under my nostrils (and my nose itself) is very oily. The entire surface area of my nostrils, you can see all my pores (I guess this is them being clogged with oil? Are these white or black heads?)... and I also occasionally get the big white things that pop and go splat when I squeeze. Also if I just squeeze my nose (anywhere, not where these little white pimples pop up) some opaque oil oozes out.
I rarely (like maybe one or two a year) get those big, red, inflamed mean looking pimples that everyone's so bothered by.

The ones on your nose are generally blackheads. Unless they get the big white bulges they are. The ones with the opauqe oil comming out are black heads. Blackheads are called such because sometimes they look like black dots wherever your pores are. If you squeeze them though white stuff still comes out. When you can see all of your pores that might mean you can see them because they have stuff in them. Or you may just have large pores.

I guess I've had those for forever, too. What happens if I use these strips and scrubs that everyone's been talking about? Does it just leave skin without the strawberry look, like I have everywhere else, or am I going to see open holes instead of black spots?
These things weren't bothering me before I read this thread, but now it's like there are things growing in my nose and I want to get them out...

You have to use soap when you wash your face. It really doesn't matter what kind (heck, I use bar soap). The key is just to get that oil off your face so the strips can adhere.
Sometimes at work when no one is looking I put strips of scotch tape on my nose, wait a second, and pull them away. It doesn't really pull anything away but surface oil and old skin, but still. Feels kind of nice.

If you remove the blackheads and keep your pores clean they should shrink a little and be less noticeable. It gives your skin a smoother look. Its a good thing. It feels good too, sometimes you don't notice how bad your nose feels until you have done it because you are so used to it.
I've never found the strips to work that well unless I take a steamy shower first to open up the pores.

I have never once had those strips remove more than 2-3 blackheads on my nose. I follow the instructions to the letter, but it just pulls off a layer of skin :x I've tried several different face scrubs too, but none of them seem to do anything. Maybe my blackheads are too small (they don't ever form bumps, just little black speckles all over my nose), but I can see them in the mirror and they annoy me. I haven't tried the apricot or Nivea scrubs though, maybe those will actually work.
I picked up the Biore strips. It didn't really grab any blackheads but it did pull off: a layer of skin and what look like a lot of gross, yellow-esque oil.

Yeah, I was under the impression that Biore strips don't do shit to actually improve your skin. They just indiscriminately pull off whatever they stick to.
I tend to use a Neutrogena foaming facial wash, then apply Witch Hazel with a cotton ball (to apparently tighten pores -- does make the skin feel extra smooth but the pore tightening is probably a total placebo), then a moisturiser (I use the L'Oreal menexpert stuff, mostly because it smells nice), and once a week an exfoliating scrub instead of the foaming wash thing.
Not sure if any of this really helps except for the half an hour after having a shower when I'm looking at myself in the mirror before work.

Does that work? I mean, it sounds like a recipe for skin irritation.

Spend extra time lathering up the problem areas.
Maybe try tee tree oil too i hear thats good, though i get a skin reaction
