    okay update

I uninstalled the drivers and replugged the device, and it recognized that something had been plugged in, but I still couldn't get to it and Windows said that a problem occurred during the installation

If you right click "My Computer" and select "Manage", then in the window that loads go to "Disk Management" which should show all attached storage devices (Hard drives, CD drives, USB etc). Does the USB Key show in there?

If it won't work in windows you could try a linux live cd.
Link to live cd download here (700MBish): http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download
You will also need another USB something to put the files on since a live cd will not allow you to write to a NTFS hd.

Or you could grab Slax for ~190MB (if you have a small data cap or something).

Anyway, given that it isn't working in any of your machines, I'd say it's probably stuffed. Send your teacher (or whatever) and email telling them what happened, and ask for a small extension. I don't think there's much else you can do.

If the key isn't showing on any of the computers nor in Disk Management then I would say the drive itself is dead. You can try a Live CD, but if multiple copies of windows can't work it then I doubt you will get a different result with Linux. Not the answer you want I know.

I suppose you could try taking the key to a friends / library / school where they have a different version of Windows and see if that works. May be quicker that d-loading a Live CD.

yeah it seems like it's given up the ghost

luckily I discovered I had more backups than I thought and a couple of the things had the most recent versions on hard copy, so I just updated them

huge pain in the ass, and I'm now unable to work any more because I wore myself out so much, but still

thanks for the help anyway guys

You said it at one point it reconised some device. If you go back into the device manager where is the key listed and what is it listed under?
