I'm helping a friend re-do his website free of charge. The color layout, links, etc are all going fine. He wants to have a little updated news column off to the side for new links and products, and creating it isn't the problem, but making it easy for him to update is.

What i'm looking for is some kind of good php script or program that will either take my existing news box, or create a fresh one, and let him update it through the web or an application, so I don't have to fix the latest news every other day.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

I'd recommend looking at a free content management system that will do all the hard work for you.

Joomla, Drupal and Wordpress are good options. I recently started working with Joomla, and it's pretty nice, and I think it'll do exactly what you're looking for.

A CMS (or even a very basic PHP news script) is probably going to be massive overkill for your needs. All you probably really need is a script that will let you edit a text file, and a script that will let you display said text file formatted with line breaks. I happen to have both if you want 'em.

If you have your heart set on a full-on news script with bells and whistles, http://cutephp.com is probably a good bet.

This sounds like RSS would be perfect for it.

thanks for all of the help so far guys.

wordpress or something else is out right now, just because the site is already developed and the way it needs to be minus some cosmetic changes. The key is getting a good news update script so that the site owner doesn't have to learn a bunch of web admin programs every time he wants to make a change.

wasted pixels, if you would PM me some more info on the scripts, I'd be grateful.
