PS3 can't read Blue Ray

Hi, just got a call from my brother in law. Long story short, seems like his PS3 is having serious difficulties reading Blue Ray movies and games. Problem is the PS3 is used and the 12 month warranty has expired. Any suggestions (besides calling Sony)?

Check to see if it can read a DVD/PS2/PS1 title. If it can't, it might just be a dirty lens, which could be fixed.
But if it can, and it's just choking on BD, then you've got the famous dead diode. Call Sony - they can fix the drive (for a cost) rather than having him get a model with no/crippled BC.
