First day of OB was great.

As of today, it takes...I don't know, HOURS, to get into the T2 Dwarves / Greenskins Scenario on my server, and I'm Order even. I'm not sure if the majority of players are above / below T2 on this server, but holy crap this sucks.

welcome to tier 2 in beta

It's not yet certain what the final list will even be. There's a few of us who will be scouting out other guilds' final decisions, so a choice can be made with that in mind.

Those videos aren't even the half of it. Looking at a newswire site I'm subscribed to, I have access to:
    Warhammer Online
    Publisher: Sega
    Developer: Climax

    whonlinelogo640x480xa7.jpg

    E3 Fact Sheet:
Warhammer Online is a new kind of massively multiplayer online game set against the backdrop of Games Workshop's grim and gritty Warhammer fantasy world. From the moment they enter the game, our players take on the role of mercenaries and outlaws living on the margins of society, who through luck, skill and a trusty blade can rise to become powerful heroes - famous or feared throughout the Empire for their bloody deeds.

The game is set in a virtual re-creation of the Reikland, at the heart of the Empire, complete with towering mountains, dark, forests, dank dungeons populated by scores of terrifying and horrific monsters. In the company of thousands of other players, you can explore, trade, fight and die as you try to carve out a reputation for yourself as a tough warrior, powerful caster or cunning thief.

    * The landscape of Warhammer Online includes the great cities of the Reikland with hundreds of locations, characters and quests. Much of the game-play will take place in these vast urban dungeons where players can spend weeks or even months exploring their many winding streets, markets, palaces and sewer systems.
    * An exciting and innovative character development system that encourages players to progress through the world and develop their characters in a unique, biographical and highly Warhammer way - Flagellant, Cut-throat or Anarchist!
    * A unique skill-based magic system that gives every player the ability to practice spell-casting. But this is Warhammer... and magicians are also viewed with the same suspicion as witches or dangerous heretics!
    * Player versus player combat is integrated into the game through the same skill and career system. High-level careers are mutually antagonistic and so if you choose to become a Bounty Hunter you will become PvP to Outlaws and vice versa!

    * Custom-built massively multiplayer engine that delivers an incredible graphic environment including: seasons, and fully dynamic weather to create a constantly changing player experience.

    Cancellation Press Release
London, UK - Tuesday 22nd June 2004: Yesterday it was announced that the joint venture between Climax and Games Workshop has ended. Today, Karl Jeffery, Climax CEO, commented: "It was a deeply sad thing for us to have to do after so much hard work and commitment from the entire team but the costs involved in bringing the Warhammer massively multiplayer online game (MMO) to market meant that we were left with little choice. With new MMO's, such as Star Wars Galaxies costing up to $ 30M to launch, this is now a very high stakes business"

Just over two years ago, Climax and Games Workshop came together to form a joint venture company whose mission it was to develop and launch a massively multi-player role playing game based on the hugely popular Warhammer table-top game.

Since then we have built an incredibly talented team in Nottingham who have developed an extraordinary game: the graphics & animation are stunning, the Leviathan tools & technology are cutting edge and the game world is gritty and realistic in a way never seen before in an MMO. The Warhammer Online game has been highly praised by the specialist press and recently won PC Zone's "online game of the show " award at the E3 expo.

During the past few months Climax and Games Workshop have been undertaking a comprehensive review of the costs to complete and launch the game. MMO's have a very different business model from traditional (boxed) games and require a huge up front investment in servers, bandwidth and customer support teams. The actual cost of rolling out the game was far higher than either partner had anticipated and we have decided that we simply cannot justify it.

This decision will not impact Climax's Nottingham studio: we have a second game already in development there and the technology team will continue to advance our Leviathan suite of MMO tools and technology. We are now exploring the possibility of bringing in another partner to assist with the roll out, a company with existing MMO experience and infrastructure would be ideal, as this would reduce costs and risk.

Here are some screenshots from 2004. These have got to be some of the silliest looking faces I've ever seen. The dwarf and especially the halflings look mentally challenged.

This is true. Normally for MMO's i try and go with a lower pop server. I'd been playing on the lower pop oceania server, but lately its been a real struggle. Not enough people to do the PQ's was fairly frustrating. I rolled another class to try (witch hunter... definately not my cup of tea heh) but on the other, higher pop oceania server, and it was much better having a lot of players around. I think this game will really need a good population to shine. I hope they dont open too many servers at launch too soon.

T2 is abandoned because there's no real incentive to level a character that's going to be wiped in 48 hours.

    Also:
    Folks,

Coming soon to a fansite near you.

And part of the problem, of course, is deciding which servers are going to be open for HS and then day 1. We certainly aren't going to open all the servers we have racked and ready to go until they are needed unless we sellout all copies on day 1. In that case I'll be the guy jumping for joy and mumbling to myself at the same time.

They've made quite a few games over the years. I guess the only "well known" ones is the ATV Offroad Fury series. Some of their hidden gems include "Disney's Meet the Robinsons" and "SpongeBob SuperSponge"

I do think that they should only add more servers as the existing ones fill up. Spreading your playerbase too thin is something even WoW managed to do.

About the T2 Scenarios, I'm ALMOST reaching it with my Warrior Priest, and then I think I'll roll an Ironbreaker or Engineer.

All in all, I'm impressed with how fun PvP'ing in this game is. Seriously. PvP in MMOs always seemed like a chore to me. (I did like Guild Wars' Random Arenas though.) But it's definitely not the case here.

For instance... I found myself creating warbands to capture the Nordlands twice already. The first time Order kept them for several hours; the second time, Destruction quickly called in the zerg rush (And then organized themselves while Order started falling apart.) to counter us and retake the objectives.

Yes, but they should be realistic about the number of servers they initially launch, based on pre-order numbers.

I mean, if they only open 10 servers at first, we're in for a fuck fest.

Looks like they changed the chicken mechanic of Open RVR to only kick in when you enter a tier that's two under your own. (T3 entering T1.. etc)

But it's also open beta that is ending in a few days. Once you get to tier 2 it really dies off because people reroll to play something else. And there are a good deal of people (myself included) who aren't even playing.

Interesting. While I have no big complaints with Mythic's WAR I will say that I liked in the E3 data on Sega's version that they were basically doing WFRP's Warhammer including the very nifty Profession system (that I think is great and would love to see used in some form in an MMO -- although the original SWG actually seemed pretty close).

But yeah, it's a good thing GW or whatever ended that and gave the IP to Mythic.

Limiting the number of Head Start servers is a bad mistake. They should open as many as they plan on having open on the 18th. If they don't and just have a few Head Start servers, those servers will get slammed hard as the HS people's friends and guilds flock to those servers. Archimonde all over again.

As much as the chicken debuff should be removed from the game, I'd pay to see a well-organized chicken raid that manages to kill one or two players.

Also this was discussed in the last thread but I'm kind of worried about how Career Mastery will work in the endgame (like 30+). Increasing certain spells with the equivalent of talent points seemed like a neat idea but won't it just end up limiting which abilities you are likely to use? Especially for certain classes like the Marauder where each path focuses on one arm, you would end up just using that one arm all the time as opposed to whatever would be best in the situation. Maybe it's just me, and I know free respecs will really help in this regard, but it seems like it could just end up limiting tactics in the end.

as a monstrosity marauder I always used the monstrosity mutation. I only used the other two to see the different graphics for them. You have more than enough abilities to fill up an entire bar just for that one mutation (and there are a couple abilities that span two mutations)

Not to take away from that screenshot but just to repeat for others:

Always take Scenario rankings with a huge grain of salt ... I've been in matches with tanks being on top of the list by far. It's not that they do more DPS but if they have good healers, they'll never die so by default they do more total damage. Also, Sorc/BW self-damage is calculated in their totals, too.

Doesn't mean I'm not happy when I'm top though! :)

When tanks can get 28 kills with 0 deaths, ping the "glass" cannons. :P

Sorc/BW self-damage is only around 13% from parsing my combat log. It's really not that great. Of the 3.5 million damage I've done from PW+ to OB, only 450k was self damage. Also, what I find the most hilarious from that screenshot is that the Runepriest outkilled and outlived, and outdamaged and outhealed the Engineer's damage. ;)

Also, multiple Bright Wizards in a team tend to cannibalize each other's scores.
