so, i refuse to believe that the open pvp servers are completely bad
there must be some fun advantages to playing on one. i plan to play on one, but from what i have read from you guys makes it sound like it's the worst idea EVEEEEEEEERRRRRRR and that it's gonna ruin the WAR experience for me.
isn't that being just a little bit dramatic? it's all the same when you hit level 40, which you can supposedly do in a ridiculously short period of time anyways

They only opened 1 Open server the last couple days of OB, so not many people have really tried it yet and very few major guilds have been willing to make the leap. For me, the real issue wasn't actually the chicken, but how much fun I had with my 12-13 zealot (bolstered to level 18) in the open RVR lakes, where I spent the vast majority of my time. I was completely useful and able to do just fine with large groups. Take away that bolster, and allow level 31s onto the same battlefield? No thanks. Fair PVP is just a lot more fun.
I would have been all over an Open server that actually expanded the bolster mechanic and bolstered down higher level players in lower tiers.

I think the point is that it's not all the same when you hit level 40. In a level 40 core, you can pop back to Tier 1 and Tier 2 scenarios to help your friends with a public quest, or show them around to some tome unlocks. You can also go back yourself to unlock tome entries for titles and general love of the tome.
In an open, you're locked out of that content very thoroughly as soon as you're 2 tiers above it. Entering the zones immediately chickens you, so you can't really do much of anything at all.
As an added bonus, open means that the keeps will be sieged and defended by the maximum non-chickens for that tier, or level 20s for tier 1 content, 30s for tier 2, etc. So the flush of contribution you get from contributing within your bracket is pretty much removed. You essentially have to overlevel it in order to be helpful.
It's just kind of... weird. They should have just used a reversed bolster mechanic that makes downranked people slightly weaker than a typical person at that level, or approximately equal. Then Open would far and away be the ruleset of choice.

Not really sure that it could be called dramatic; it's just the facts laid out which makes Open RvR sound pretty much broken:
1) Toons can head into zones 1 tier below them and gank or otherwise harrass people trying to get quests done.
2) They will also be in the lower tiers' open RvR zones making it difficult for those lower level people to get anything done.
3) There is no level adjusting even amidst those in the same tier, which means that you really are going to get ganked if you try to RvR at the lower levels in your tier, as well as those who are coming in from a tier above.
You might think it's all the same at 40, but some people would like to actually be able to RvR their way up to 40. On top of that, it seems very possible that, while Core servers have the majority of their 40's working towards sieging the enemy's city, Open RvR servers will have many of their 40's off ganking lowbies instead, diverting from the primary purpose of the game.
Some people might find all this fun, and more power to 'em... Mythic has given them a place to play. But I am glad to say that the main PA guilds don't see it that way.
given that the biggest battle in this game occurs at the open rvr level, i think it makes sense that you can harass the lower tiers
that makes perfect sense to me - it stifles the enemy, so they can't keep unlocking each tier to get to your capital city. means that you're actually aiding your side. sounds kinda neat
edit: actually, it sounds like it makes the tier system make even more sense

No, it doesn't. They don't need to unlock each tier. Lower tiers just contribute some percentage of their earned points to the upper tiers. A tier 4 character is still helping his side more by fighting in the tier 4 zones. Harassing is still just being a douchebag.

I can see how the 'stifling the enemy' tactic sorta makes sense, but when you're talking about invading questing zones that have no RvR objectives and there's no reason to be there at all other than to fuck with people, it goes beyond the objectives of the game and into asshattery.
But again, that might be some peoples' cup of tea. By the sheer numbers of people who are choosing to avoid those servers, however... even Goons who are the kings of asshattery... it would seem that most people see the ruleset as rather broken and pointless.
i don't really give a shit about tome unlocks, so... i guess i won't care.
i play really just to pvp, so i'm not too concerned...
I would argue that it actually takes away from the chances to pvp. Since lower level players arent bolstered, that means that a given Tier will be dominated by people that are from the tier above. Being lower level means you'll be useless therefore wont bother to pvp at all, until you are also within the top 3-4 levels allowed to fight in a given zone. To illustrate, in the Tier 1 zone you'll pretty much just find 17-20's dominating. There would be no point even going there if you were say, level 9, even in a full group, as you'd be completely dominated by level 20's. So you've basically cut out a huge pool of people that potentially could have been pvp'ing.
On a Core server in the same situation, you'd have in Tier 1 anyone that wanted to participate from level 1-11 (though likely 5-11, just so they have a few abilities). The lower dudes would be bolstered to 8, and they'd be able to be reasonably effective. Higher level dudes cant get in but hey, they have their own bracket, which again would be widened by allowing bolstered people to have some impact.
Not to mention it focuses people. If you want to find some action, you know exactly where to go to find it. Its focused in the RvR region.
And, my mind was well and truly made up when on my core server during the open beta, i was in the regular high elf questing area, not too far from the warcamp but definately not in the RvR region. I spotted a sorc a level above me standing nearby, which i thought was an NPC. I attacked and was RvR flagged, and we had a little one-on-one. So yup, outside the RvR region i was able to PvP someone, just by flagging... sorta like WoW. At that point i decided there was really no reason for me to roll open, as the only other thing it could possibly offer me was ganking lowbies.
edit : As for it being all the same at 40, again i disagree, based on the 'pool of people' concept. With bolstering, you'd have all the people in their lower 30's able to help out, so more people getting involved.
Well if you want to gank and be ganked, that's cool. Open servers will allow that. Just that they probably won't be very heavily populated as the rules stand now.
i know at least one of the open RvR servers is completely full, since i have a buddy on there in the CE head start
so we'll see what happens. like i said, you don't stay low level very long in this game, so the only thing it takes away from you is the ability to go back and do tome unlocks.
honestly, i'm looking forward to making enemies at level 40, finding out when they roll alts, and then ganking the shit outta them. that kind of drama is very entertaining

For actually playing the game as you level up, it sucks balls. RvR in this game is really fun from 1-40. Open RvR will suck until you hit level cap because it ruins the fairness of PvP, and at level cap it sucks if you find out about a title you might have liked from a lowbie zone or something even if you're not a completionist.
Trust me, I roll PvP in most MMOs, like WoW and AoC, and I'm going Core in WAR without a second thought. RvR is fantastic in this game by default, their attempt to implement an unrestricted PvP system ruined what was good about it.

So, let's talk about Healers doing DPS. What do you guys think about Shamans/Archmages/Disciples/Warrior Priests, all of whom have a mastery tree strictly for DPS, speccing down it and playing primarily for DPS? Suppose for the sake of argument that they're good players and heal as a secondary function when appropriate(a crappy player is a crappy player regardless of spec). So they're DPS classes that trade some damage for more survivability and utility. Is it wrong of them to do that? A lot of people playing scenarios are certainly of that opinion - they'll see a healer nearby, charge in assuming he'll have their back, then die and blame him for not being in healbot mode. On one hand it's reasonable to assume that a healer is there to heal and it's pretty annoying to find out the hard way that they're not. But maybe he doesn't have fun being a healbot, and if he couldn't spec DPS he'd play a DPS class and wouldn't be healing period. It's not like his choice of class reduces the number of other healers on the team.
Now that I think about it, can healers get DPS gear?
Order is for sissies and stunties. I want to join da big WAAGH and be da big boss ork!
They say since I picked Horde in WoW (same thing, Alliance iz fo da sissies & stunties!) that I should follow thems. But Black Orcs are so cool in appearance and game mechanic. I feel so turned off by all the Order races. They look so bland and without character. If I play with them I could only picture myself being an Ironbreaker - but it just isn't the same!
i would strongly suggest giving the dwarves a go kung fu, they have anger and grudge-holding down to an art... and they are darn funny to, give it a shot.
Ok I get that I can't login today since I got the SE rather than the CE, but why the hell can't I even patch the client up?
Because this game, unlike WoW, actually makes you authenticate in order to patch. Since your account is not active (because it's an SE account), you cannot patch. Despite that you can actually get the patch.

Yeah I understand why, I was going for more of a, "This is stupid" line of reasoning. They know my account is valid and will be open in a few days, it should let me patch so I can login when I am allowed in.
i would strongly suggest giving the dwarves a go kung fu, they have anger and grudge-holding down to an art... and they are darn funny to, give it a shot.
Yeah, it seems that I shall be playing Order as an Ironbreaker =/
And while that class may be fun, I feel like I will be missing out on a big part of what first drawn me into WAR - da WAAAGH!
And as for not being able to patch because you're account isn't active yet: it sucks as it'd be nice to be able to prepare, but from a bandwidth standpoint, it makes sense to only give out the goods to people actively playing / subscribing. Patches can get mighty large and bandwidth ain't cheap when you're hosting an MMO.
Know what i find hilarious? When you're in the dwarf town, every time someone finishes the Helga quest (i think?) and all the NPCs yell out "Raargh Helga!!!"
They're like a pub full of drunken louts. Which is to say, perfect!

Seriously, the Greenskins are the only redeeming part of Destruction to me, simply because they are so god damn funny.
That said, I'm playing a Shadow Warrior, and loving it so far. I am, however, disappointed that the PQs are already empty.
Also, anyone else find it disconcerting that some of the servers are "full" with only about 60,000 allowed to play at maximum right now (and probably not that many actually online)? How many people are able to play on a server before the thing can't handle it?

They have said a number of times now that they are limiting server population on purpose until head start is over.
Okay...question. Is anyone here a fileplanet subscriber? And if so, does subscribing actually make your downloads faster?
Because I've just had my download interruped again, after waiting hours to even begin the dl. I'm about to just sign up for the premioum fileplanet acct, but I'd like to know if it's actually worth it. I just want to get this going by tuesday if possible.

Sev: Your gameplay is the most heavily yomi based around. Usually you look for characters that allow you to force guessing situations for big dmg. Even if the guess is mathematically nowhere near in your favor lol. You're happiest when you have either a 50/50, 33/33/33 or even a 75/25 situation to go crazy with. And you will take big risks to force those situations to come up.
