Evil Frogs

So I just moved to Jacksonville FL and am here temporarily till Apirl. I live in a ground floor apartment next to a very large lake. This lake apparently is home to 10 billion frogs. I am talking an amount of frogs that will BLOW YOUR MIND! They are everywhere. I can't walk from my door to my car (about 20 yards) without seeing 5. And that is on a concrete walk way. If I walk down to the lake itself I will see 50.

Now what makes these frogs evil is starting about 8pm when the sun goes down until about 3am these frogs Make a SHIT FUCK TON of noise. I am not kidding They are LOUD!!!! I have my surround sound stero blaring at 60% capacity iron maiden and i can still hear the frogs. I can hear them over just about everything.
TV, Computer, exercise equipment, sex, eating, video games, board games, studying. ANYTHING I do has a back drop of annoying frogs. Also the pitch seems to change in their noisiness as time goes on. It starts out low peaks and goes back down. At its peak it is seriously loud. It is keeping me up at night.

Does anyone have any Idea how I can drown out or alleviate this noise. (I am pretty sure it would impossible to eliminate, I don't have the time to plan mass frog holocaust)

Pop for some noise canceling headphones. A good pair will cost you, though. Might not help much while you're trying to sleep, but it'll help drown them out without violating any noise ordinances.

Even if you did have time for a mass frog holocaust I bet they are protected and you'd be in a heap of trouble.

Just wait until you're driving down some of the roads at night during the rain. The roads get covered with them and they don't seem to mind the cars running them over. Noise canceling headphones is about all you can do. You won't want to spend the money sound proofing an apartment.

I suppose that would be helpful while sleeping but mainly its the fact that it is just constant from 8-3 am that is the really annoying part. Like if I am watching TV I have to turn it up really loud to not have the frogs be a factor.

Should have spent a night here before I signed the lease!!

Unlikely, but if the lake is a landscaped part of the apartment building/complex, you can complain to management.

If it's not, you can try calling city hall to find somewhere to lodge a complaint. Won't likely do you much good, but you never know.

Earplugs and headphones is about all you can do, if the apartment/city is un-able/willing to help.

Are the frogs poisonous, and does your apartment allow... pets?

One pet probably isn't going to put an end to 10 billion frogs on it's own. ;)

Last time I checked they were going for 7.55 a pound at the grocery store.

If you put live frogs in the fridge they go into a coma.

Also, Hawaii is using caffeine to kill their frogs. I think it is a 2% solution.

You could also try snake repellent. Careful though, as that stuff will kill fish if it gets in water.

But, in all honesty, you're not going to be able to repel or even put a dent in such a population. Any method you use to try and kill the frogs would probably have a negative effect on something else, and not really help much. Try cooking some for fun if you're into that (I would :)), but, otherwise, learn to live with it and use headphones or ear plugs.

Sucks, I know ...but I think nature wins in this case.

    That sounds mind numbing. o_o

Headphones is basically the only solution.. And that isn't even a solution.

You can plug em into some TVs for TV watching I think. :P

Welcome to life in the South. Noisy frogs are just a part of life, and after a few weeks you won’t even notice them.

Just give it some time, you can get used to anything after a while. I don't even wake up anymore when people get stabbed outside my apartment.

Seriously, though, be careful with this...frog guts can be very slippery.

Same here. I was just coming here to post that. It's like white noise; after a while you won't even notice it.

I know this seems like a cop-out answer but it's not. You're right in thinking that you can't eliminate the noise. You will get used to it, though.

Don't try poisoning them or something stupid like that, you could adversely effect other species plus get into a ton of trouble.

They make white noise machines, don't they?
