I learned to play on a Hagstrom II. So old. So haggard. So rad.

You learned to play on powerglove.jpg?

Haggard had me leaning towards Mike Haggar, but the power glove will do.

acoustic is on permanent loan from my dad, it was the first guitar I learned on.

I am still a disgrace to all guitar players everywhere, though

So I finally took the plunge and bought myself a Hagstrom Ultra Swede.

Most beautiful tone I have ever heard from a guitar. Beats the Gibsons I've played in terms of pure quality of tone, though I have a little less control.

    I'll post pics sometime soon.

I keep my guitars and amps within arms reach from my chair in my bed/computer/everything but bath-room.

Though I'm moving my dinky little Epiphone Les Paul Special II to the other corner to move the Swede right behind me.

one of my friends had one till he basically got a totally custom bass from roscoe guitars because he got to know the owner. (the place is based in winston salem)

I have a jazz bass copy and
    014913.jpg
    this

    and

    020403.jpg
    this.

the acoustic has a pickup I made attached to the front of it now because I was messing around with creating lo-fi electronics over the summer and ended up creating a piezo pickup so I didn't have to spend like 50 fuckin bucks to hook up to an amp.

One of my favorite features of the Hagstrom, and in fact, like, half the reason I got it(in addition to it's jaw-droppingly beautiful tone, amazing action, and pretty look), was that it has a coil-tap switch that basically turns its humbuckers into single-coil pickups. Fucking godsend.

    my electric does that too.

I probably won't ever get another guitar that doesn't do it, it's so good.

I really need new gear. The other guitar player in my band has had a fancy new Telecaster for a while and just bought a new Krank full stack (I have never seen so much chrome on anything ever). So now my Epiphone SG and Frankenstein in amp form look pretty terrible.

Does anybody know anything about Ibanez's Artcore series? It's looking right up my alley.
    AS103NT.gif
It'll be kind of like that but a slightly different cut away.

Also, my band just finished some recordings if anyone wants to check them out. I'd like to think they're pretty groovy. However, they're only on myspace and spamming that is super lame. If linking that is cool, I'll do it, if not, PM me or something.

    Or not. You know, whatever.

The Epi specials(Les Paul or SG, really) are great for learning. They're basically the Gibson version of the Squier.

For a first guitar, they certainly do everything they need to, but if you start performing you'll find them somewhat lacking in many regards.

I like the increasing trend of hip hop artists having backing bands during performances rather than just some guy with turn tables and a sampling deck.

It actually makes it a live concert rather than just some guy running around on stage yelling into a mike over pre-recorded music.

I saw Snoop Dogg and Wyclef this summer and they both had awesome backing bands.

Wyclef is even a pretty decent guitar player.

The last two years or so have definetly been a bit of a mini musical renaissance. More and more kids these days have some pretty awesome and advanced tastes and generally people have broader musical horizons. I thank the internet, youtube, and ipods.

I actually thought about it while I was working one day over the summer.

if not for the internet, my musical tastes would have probably branched out to green day and nirvana then hit a brick wall.

the internet has fucked record companies, but it's been an absolute boon for artists who otherwise would be unknown outside of tightly knit scenes and word of mouth.

also: shit I want a twelve string.

I always love playing them at guitar shops.

do you know the trick about the string should sound the same as if you press down the 5th fret on the string before it

except for the B string its the same as the 4th fret of the g string

    buy a guitar tuner.

they're like 10-15 bucks and the light on it turns green when it's properly tuned.

e: ^^ that's true, but you can't get the e string with that method, just get it in tune with itself.

If you've got a microphone at your computer then check Audio Phonics' guitar tuner. I've been using this thing for years and it's so damn handy.

Yep I've tuned it with itself using that fifth/fourth fret method. The G B aren't quite as bad as the E though.

I'll go out and get a tuner I suppose.

By the way my friend mentioned something in passing about the strings needed to be raised or something, but I didn't quite get the details. Any ideas?

the action needs to be raised. as it is, the strings are probably too close to the fretboard and that can cause a lot of buzzing/just nasty shit in general.

unfortunately, unless you know what you're doing, getting a guitar set up properly is something you have to pay someone to do because you can irreversibly fuck up the neck.

e: actually, it depends on the bridge you have. fuck it I really can't diagnose guitars over the internet.
