Microsoft Commercials - I AM A PC!

ArcSynArcSyn Registered User regular
Everyone been keeping up with the ridiculous Microsoft commercials? Microsoft.com has the full-length versions in the highest quality I could find. They really don't have much to do with Microsoft or Vista, but I find them hilarious and a breath of fresh air compared to most commercials (cough::MAC::cough).

New Commercial: "The Family"
watch?v=AJlaW0D-t9Q

The Shoe Circus
watch?v=IiVMPgCf6YY

What do you guys this? Funny, stupid, brilliant?

I love them, I think it's so much better than what Mac is doing, even if it says nothing about Vista. Kinda like they are saying, "We're above low-blow hits in marketing" by not responding to the (old and worn out - I used to find them funny when the first few came out, now I'm just sick of them) PC vs. Mac commercials.

EDIT: After re-reading my post I sound like an MS fanboy. I am not, but I am tired of hearing the PC vs. Mac commercials. If I could have afforded one, I would buy a Mac.

I AM A PC! And I LOVE THIS COMPANY!

I saw it last night during The First 48 on A&E (weird, I know) and the best part was Bill still working over the shoe.

I do like how the commercials are telling a story of some kind, like a webisode or something. I wanna see where they're going with their stolen item.

The firm that is handling this campaign did the same thing for Burger King. It's designed to grab your attention and keep you interested. I gotta be honest, I watched the whole commercial the first time, trying to figure out what the hell they were saying.

Of course, I'm biased (ad major), but I think they're kinda missing the boat for a lot of consumers. At least they held off showing the Microsoft logo until the end, but any reasonable person is going to know about the Jerry Seinfeld collaboration well in advance. They know it's Microsoft's answer to Apple, but I don't know if they're making a difference.

    At least they're generating buzz.

See, I don't think people will know about the Seinfeld collaboration. I hear about it because I'm online all day at work and half the evening at home. But MOST people will simply be surprised to see these commercials on TV. My wife, who stays home with our kids and works evenings at the ER, didn't know anything about them until I told her about them when we saw the Shoe Circus one on TV. Though, she also didn't see the humor in it, but she doesn't like this type of humor either.

The real thing is, they are generating buzz. That's what a company wants. I've also been seeing more Mojave commercials, which are targeting the "try Vista - you might like it" crowd.

The second one I'd imagine would be cut down a great deal. There's enough material there to split into two separate commercials.

I've seen the Shoe Circus commercial in 3 different styles. Two different cuts for 30 second fills, and another cut for a 1 minute fill. I don't think I've seen the whole 1 min 30 sec on TV yet.

I'm sure we'll see cuts and probably 4 or so different versions of the second commercial, since it's so long.

It still didn't sell me Windows, but it made Bill Gates seem like a likable guy.

The second one contains a pretty nasty rip on Steve Jobs - he is the old lady that's been there for 12 years.

Are you serious? A big part of the ad was a stab at Jobs, his controlling nature within Apple, and his famous "reality distortion field". The old lady who'd been there for 12 years (the same number of years since Jobs returned to Apple) ran the whole show. She was doing the laundry, she was doing the yard work, she was fixing the car. She kept up the facade of a rather dated looking home full of people who were caught up in appearances (the neighbor's car) and the pretension of useless things like Greek coins, wine mustard and leather giraffes. When the old lady croaks, the place will fall apart. They had shitty pong to play (Macs suck at gaming) while Bill Gates had the most incredible game ever for the kid.

The first ad was a rip on the Apple Store - the fact you buy your computers from a place in the mall and they don't even fit you properly. Regular people pointlessly idolize them (the family staring through the window) and you don't get much for your money "Why pay more?"

Keep in mind the entire purpose of these ads is that they're a direct response to Apple's "Mac vs. PC" campaign, it's hardly a stretch to point out the statements being made about Apple vs. MSFT in them.

The inferences might be there, but most people are never going to notice or understand them. The average person not only doesn't watch advertisements, they actively avoid them. Only those with an active knowledge of both companies, their icons, methodologies, and the stereotypes surrounding them are going to notice the parallels.

Oh they most certainly were in the sense that the commercials were digs at macs.

Hell, look at the Giraffe. Bill Gates is accused of "stealing" something by a petty little girl who is worried that he's infringing on her space.

That is not at all like MS being accused of "stealing" features of Mac OS by Apple users.

Meanwhile there is no ramification for the father eating some mustard, even after reprimanding his kid for doing that? Hm.

There are totally layers of shitting on Apple in the commercials.

However, the connection to Steve Jobs not looking so well and having cancer and the Old Lady being close to dying is off I think. She's an old lady because she's stuck in her ways while doing completely useless things, it's not them saying "SOON STEVE JOBS WILL DIE"

The commercials do take swipes at apple, but they are designed in a way that 90% of the people watching won't know that. It's actually pretty cleverly crafted, like the writers are trying to cater to the hardcore audience while still making the commercial funny for joe average who don't know the inside stuff.

Also, today's PA comic takes a pretty good swipe at the commercials:

Also notice in the shoe store the shoes are sized incorrectly, and they had to know going in that the shoes ran small. In fact, one of the family members didn't know that and the other had to explain it to them.

Also consider that the food is prepared with something extra that Seinfeld didn't want. And the food was the same food they already had with no change.

Bill Gates has a Firewall to protect against the monsters. That one's blatant.

The woman has $1,800 that she's not sharing with her husband for no real reason. Gee what do we know that's around $1,800. Seems like she's hoarding money.

The pool doesn't get warm even though they want it to. It lacks the basic functionality. Sure it's a pool, but it's not as good of a pool as Bill Gates has.

Bill Gates is connecting with the people rather well until there's a negative advertising campaign against him that isn't even true.

There is a hell of a lot of shitting on apple all up ins.

Now these make sense. It really doesn't help to see the abridged versions that are actually running on tv, what with entire miniplots missing and things.

It's pretty clever as a marketing campaign, but it's absolutely not practical as far as combating the Mac commercials. They should probably be focusing a little harder on the Mojave experiment for the average person. Those are much more direct.

Think of how lame it would be if Microsoft just put out some ads that just said "Hey, Vista is great because of x, y and z."

Apple deserves to be shit on for those lame Mac vs. PC ads. I'm surprised it took Microsoft this long to do something.
