Is my harddrive dead? (Audio sample provided)

So, without warning, one day I'm on my laptop. I shut it down to run some errands, and when I come back to it later that day. Dead.

Harddrive was making this... sound. Eeeeoooooeeooooeoooooooeeeeeeoooooeoooo...

So I figured it was a harddrive issue, and I was more or less confirmed when I put in my boot disk and it says, "Hard drive not found." Now, to a less anal, thorough person, they might accept their fate now, but I'm still trying to make sure. Moreover, I want to know if anyone thinks, just by hearing the sound, it is reperable.

Audio sample is provided. I recorded it with my cell phone, so the audio is low. You'll need to turn it up rather loud to hear the noise. I can only promise with every ounce of my worth that this isn't some kind of screamer file.

Soooo.... help?

Normally hard drives make clicking noises when they die but that doesn't necessarily mean this isn't dead. You can try sticking in the freezer for ten minutes and then trying to use it. especially if their is anything you need to backup.

I should also not that it may not be the harddrive itself, but some kind of cable or connectors between the hard drive and the CPU itself... or something. But it seems to be the harddrive which is making the sound.
