It's 11:56pm. 1994.
You sip from your coffee and start up Telix. The glow of the screen is reflected upon your face as you navigate the BBS listings, slamming the keys to dial up Critical Failures. It rings. Hell yeah, rarely any busy signals on this system since the Sysop made some upgrades. Too bad he's a major dick.
The squealing tones of the modems initiating the connection draw you into the zone even further, and you set the mug down on the coffee-stained desk. Hundreds of people, all connected in a virtual world, it's god damn amazing. And addictive.

Speaking of games, the Phalla of the Red Dragon door has been available for a month now. Despite it being one of the most popular doors across most BBSes, I feel it an inferior and sloppily designed game. I intended to remove it outright from the door list but the community would not have it, so I propose the following to the users: I have tweaked PoRD and reset the game. Everyone will have to create new players. It is in what I guess I should call 'hardcore' mode. The Dragon must be faced every day and you must progress quickly. There is a time limit to defeat the Dragon by. If the game is not won by the end of the 10th day, I will be removing PoRD from the system. So, if the users wish to save their stupid little game, they will need to show it by winning. So dance, my minions! I'd rather see that game gone from the menus, I feel this BBS will have more integrity and strength without a shoddily-written crutch. Also, I need to make room for a new door, Critical Adventures, developed by yours truly! It is a fantastic game with riveting narration and bombastic action! Interesting. PoRD is an awesome and popular game, and you're pretty sure anything written by the Sysop would be equal parts epic fail and drudgery.
Probably should log back into the game and start up a new character... if the BBS drops PoRD there's no telling what will happen to this community, and you like it just how it is damn it.

D = Mystic
L = Thief
The class you choose will determine certain abilities. How those will come into play, you do not know yet.

Gender has no mechanical effects. It will have narrative effect however.
Your alias will be your PA one, so no need to specify one.
You can change your mind about your class by just specifying !NEW again up until Day 1 starts.

All players have a class regardless of faction. The classes are as follows: [color=lime]Death Knight[/color] Your meat-and-potatoes, sword-swinging dude. Gains a passive bonus to attack and defensive strength, and also earns extra experience from Forest Fights. [color=purple]Mystic[/color] Equipped with various magical skills that provide special powers. Boost defensive or attack strength against players with the Disappear and Heat Wave spells, and support your champion as he battles the fearsome Red Dragon with the Shatter power. [color=royalblue]Thief[/color] The sneaky type who robs people blind. Can relieve other players of gems, and can also turn gems in to the Thieves' Guild in order to earn some bonus experience. [color=lime]-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-[/color] [color=white]Factions[/color] There are a few factions among the players. Only one faction may win. [color=lime]PORD Players[/color] The town villagers and wannabe dragonslayers! Everyone is competing and collaborating to make sure that Red Dragon is slain and the PORD game is preserved! Well, almost everyone... [color=royalblue]Griefers[/color] The old men of the BBS that want to see the newbies and the game that brought them in removed from the system. They will do all that they can to stall and break the players' advancement in order to return the BBS to the citadel of information and sophisticated discussion it once was. [color=darkred]Hackers[/color] Malicious code manipulators that want to see not just the game, but the entire BBS destroyed. They'll be searching for a way into the inner workings of the system by using the tweaked mechanics of the game to bring the entire system crashing down. [color=lime]-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-[/color] [color=white]The Vote[/color] Each day the village must vote for their champion in red bold. Players must vote every day or the hosts may do unpleasant things to them. [color=red][b]!MrBlarney[/b][/color] No retractions are necessary and may get you mocked. Simply vote again. The champion of the day will face the Red Dragon. Otherwise the Dragon will destroy the entire village. Blame the Sysop and "Hardcore" mode. What's that? You are not level 12? Well, die bravely! Only players at level 12 have any chance of success, so it's a suicide mission for anyone not ready for the Red Dragon. [color=lime]There is no coming back from a Red Dragon death.[/color] If the Champion for the day is level 12, they may specify in their PM up to [color=lime]FOUR supporters[/color] who will aid them in the challenge. Choose very wisely and remember that not all wish to see the great beast slain. [color=lime]-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-[/color] [color=white]Level and Stats[/color] As you fight, you gain experience. As you do, you level up. The higher your level, the more effective you are in combat versus players and dragon alike. You must be level 12 to challenge the dragon yes, but you aren't required to be if you are just trying to support the champion. Everyone has a link to their stats page that was sent to them in their initial role PM. [color=lime]Do not share this link.[/color] If you are on a shared computer, take precautions to protect yourself like you usually should for Phalla. (Clear history/cache) The stats page will update each day. This is in place to avoid the problems in the past with these PM heavy games. No more missed PMs or three hour sessions to send them all out. Do not try to cheat the system, guessing links will get you a scolding and it will lock you out if you harrass it. Plus it's pretty lame. Don't metagame this or cheat, it's Phalla and fun times. [color=lime]-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-[/color] [color=white]Death and Such[/color] Death in the game is only a setback. Being Dead happens when you lose a player duel, are shanked in the middle of the night, and so forth. When you are killed and Dead, you may not post or PM or communicate with anyone at all about the game. [color=lime]The game is not over for you however.[/color] The following maintenance you will return back to the land of the living. Since kills happen at the beginning of the narration, you will miss out on gains and experience the night you are killed. You are also resurrected at the beginning, so [color=lime]send in actions when you are dead[/color] because they will be acted upon that night when you return. Player killing therefore is a means of hampering players, effectively nullifying them for one day. However, it is also crucial to success, as successfully killing another player will earn you a large experience bonus. This kind of powerleveling may be necessary to defeat the dragon. Technically not Death, some of the factions have means to permanently remove players. Griefers will harrass players into abandoning their accounts, and Hackers will corrupt accounts so that they are deleted at maintenance. [color=lime]There is no coming back from harrassment/corruption.[/color] [color=lime]-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-[/color] [color=white]Actions[/color] Each day of your short-lived existence is full of choices! Be sure to PM SYSOP with your actions. To keep things manageable, [color=lime]ONLY YOUR LAST PM WILL BE ACKNOWLEDGED.[/color] You may send in as many PMs before day close as you wish. If you have to activate/target your class powers each day, do so. If they conflict with Town Actions they will explicitly state so. Everyone gets a choice of Town Action for the day. These are: ([color=lime]H[/color])ear Seth Able the bard sing. ([color=lime]F[/color])lirt with Violet / Seth Able ([color=lime]B[/color])ribe the Bartender ([color=lime]P[/color])urchase equipment at King Arthur's Weapons and Abdul's Armour You may only perform one Town Action per day. Hearing Seth Able will often result in some kind of bonus, Flirting will help your Charm (or earn you rejection and humiliation), Bribing can allow you to attack other players at the inn, and Purchasing equipment will increase your strength ratings. [color=lime]Hear the Bard[/color] Listening to Seth Able sing a tune will grant you a random bonus that day. Well, usually anyways. [color=lime]Flirting[/color] Flirting is with Violet or Seth Able, depending on your gender. Choices with Violet (for males): Wink Kiss on hand Sit her on your lap Grab her behind Seduce her Marry her Choices with Seth Able (for females): Wink Flutter eyelashes Ask to buy you a drink Kiss soundly Seduce him Marry him You must specify which action you are taking when you flirt. Move too fast and you may get humiliated, but fortune favours the bold. Successful flirting depends solely on what your Charm score is, and success increases your Charm by one so long as it wasn't too easy! [color=lime]Bribe the Bartender[/color] For the price of one gem, the Bartender will let you borrow his keys. You may specify a target to attack in the night. They must be alive, and they must not be more than two levels below your own. Player combat is resolved with the toss of the dice. The base chance to win is 50/50, with the odds shifted based on the assailant's Attack Strength and the victim's Defensive Strength. The loser will be Dead for the next day, but will return the day after. The winner will receive experience based on the level difference, and may pick up a gem or two if the victim has any. [color=lime]Purchasing Equipment[/color] If you have a gem you may trade up your weapon and armour. You may improve your gear in this fasion at most four times. [color=lime]Resolution Order[/color] Buffs -> Vote -> Kills -> Town Actions -> Forest Fights -> Stealing [color=lime]-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-[/color] [color=white]The Forest[/color] All adventurers seek out the monsters of the forest. It is the means by which wealth, glory, and experience are gained. It is assumed that you will set out for the forest every day, you do not need to specify it in the PM. The results will be random, but those with high Charm will be luckier than others. Good fortune can net you quite the boon! Among the rewards of the daily forest trek are bonus experience, gems, Charm, and other special events that you will discover. Some are: [color=lime]Faeries[/color] You might come across a group of faeries during your hunts. If you do, you will capture one! A fairy provides you with an extra chance at life, if you die once to the Red Dragon or another player you will be brought back to continue the fight, a second shot. The fairy is then gone. Faeries do not protect against harrassment or corruption. [color=lime]Dark Horse Tavern[/color] Stumbling through the forest you may come across the Dark Horse Tavern. If you come to the tavern you will be given an option to be made after the narration, when you respond it will be done immediately. The options available are currently not revealed to you. [color=lime]-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-[/color] [color=white]Equipment and Stuff[/color] Players have their weapon, their armour, their wealth, and miscellaneous stuff. Everyone starts out with a Stick and a Coat, and this equipment will continue to improve as you fight and level up. Gold is abstracted away and you will not be keeping track of it. Gems will be the only wealth tracked. They can be used as mentioned in Town Actions, and will be found during your adventures. They are the catch-all item for trades and bonuses. [color=lime]Gems can be traded to other players by sending a separate PM to SYSOP.[/color] Trades are instant. Your weapon and armour will give you bonuses to your strength against both players and the Red Dragon. To upgrade to the next level of gear, you can purchase it with one gem as a Town Action. There was a Legend of the Green Dragon floating online somewhere. Don't know if it's still around, but it was a very faithful re-creation of Legend of the Red Dragon for modern browsers.
Not going to sign up for this, though. Not particularly a Phalla person.
I'll be leaving now, as to not derail this.
Just like people go out and watch the movies or read the books for other phallas, I'm sure plenty of people will try this game out and I definitely won't be discouraging that.
